iPhone 3G: 3G connectivity
iPhone 4: new design architecture/Retina display
iPhone 5: LTE
iPhone 6: bigger screens
iPhone 7: ?

So far, I would say the iPhone 4 was the iPhone with the most "surprise features" (not counting the leak). For the others, we knew what was coming.

The iPhone 7 rumors are all over the place, so it's kind of nice not to know exactly what to expect!

EDIT: It better be a good one, it's the 10th iPhone.

Maybe that you can use it as a phone?

Much improved design/look without antenna bands
Stronger glass
Better weight balance
Reduced height (bring the display closer to the top and bottom edges)
Less rounded on the sides for easier grip and reduced width
Plus the obvious bumps in camera quality and CPU power (but not as much as the 6 -> 6s)

Pretty sure we'll see a redesign...and of course a new cpu. Would be a plus if waterproofing happens, no RAM bump however.

Waterproof with underwater photo/video capability for scuba diving, swimming, or just day at the beach, and wash sand/salt/dirt off under sink, just like AW.

Those are good thoughts!

Still, I feel like if the main selling point only related to a new design, then it wouldn't be a useful new feature like 3G, LTE, and bigger screens were. I guess we're just at the point where Apple can only do so much to improve their phone.

New design and improved camera

The numbered models are usually incremental upgrades under the hood and are more about selling off their physical redesign. The S models are where the serious improvements are made.

I have the same opinion. Until the last couple of years (and it may still be true) people on this forum generally seemed the think the S models were "minor upgrades" because they looked the same.

I think the display upgrade will. iPhone 6s is currently way behind other flagship phone's display. 720p is laughable in 2015.

I think Apple will go OLED with iPhone 7. iOS is going to look absolutely gorgeous on an OLED display.

That it's the latest one. Bragging rights to be first to have it. Just like every year.

Most people don't know what's inside. Like how many of the millions with 6s/6s+ know it has 12,000 times the computing power of original Macintosh computer.

I would say that physical design will be the biggest feature of upcoming iphone 7. But I also read that new i phone 7's screen size will be only 4.7 inch for iphone7 and 5.5 inch for 7 plus. So I doubt over its success as I phone 6 and 6+ have quite bigger screen.

To be fair, it's a 750p display, but I completely agree with you, especially considering even budget phones are starting to come out with 1080p displays.
