I like the OP with the price guess on a 64 GB iPhone... seeing they charge about 1000.00 extra for the MacBook Air with that much solid state RAM.. a 64MB iPhone would come in at about 1499.00. I would be interesting if they did come out with a phone with this kind of price tag and see who would purchase one...

They didn't stop selling them because they are "phasing out" the EDGE iPhone. They are sold out because they mismanaged their inventory and demand outstripped their forecasts. Pure and simple. And if Apple's smart, and they are of course, they will replenish their stock and keep selling EDGE phone at least until the 3G is announced and the release date is within a couple of weeks.

No. That's completely and utterly wrong. Apple is 'phasing out' the EDGE iPhone because of the fact that release will be a suprise. What do you think will happen if they replenish stock and then 3 weeks later release a new iPhone. 80%+ returns worst case. What is Apple going to do with all those iPhones? Sell them cheaper at a loss? Yeah good plan. Apple is not going to go through the hell they did when they had to issue mass credit to pissed off customers. Better to stop selling them, and hint that something new and better is coming.

That and AT&T stated that they want all their smartphones to be 3G by the end of this year. And that means no more EDGE iPhone. Any EDGE phones from Apple would be a dummy iPhone nano if something like that were to exist.

Why does GPS on a cell phone have to require a monthly fee? I know existing services do this, and I just don't get it. When you buy a standalone GPS from Garmin or Magellan, you don't have to pay a monthly fee. But if it's on your phone then you have to? I really hope Apple doesn't go down this path...it doesn't seem like something they'd do so I remain hopeful they won't (or let AT&T do it).

iPhone Nano 4 & 8gb (EDGE, no data plans, no touch screen, comes in wide variety of colours) - $199.99

EGDE is used for data, so why would a phone have it, if you couldn't use data plans? More importantly, why would Apple make a phone without internet? (And expect it to sell for 199)

I highly doubt there will be a front camera for video telephony, no American carriers support that right now.

Why do allot of Americans think they are the only country around?

Just because one country doesn't support what most others do, shouldn't stop a multi-national company producing the standard for the rest of the world.

this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read since ages. No touch screen? how exactly is it supposed to compete with other phones in the market if the key feature that distinguishes the iPhone is its innovative touch interface. In fact, the sole reason Apple could come into the market with the iPhone is the multitouch UI.

It's not that we think we're the only country in the world. More than 50% of all revenue typically comes from this one country, so economically, we tend to give it a great deal of consideration. It's also typically easier to create the agreements needed for a successful launch here on our own soil. Again resulting in greater consideration here first, than in other countries.

Best,

Alex

why the high prices? i get the feeling that people don't want the iphone to be cheaper. i've read people getting upset about the IDEA of subsidies. what gives? people don't like to by awesome products for a cheap price? or there something else going on here?

Well since Apple is an American company, and does most of its sales in the US, there is a reason for those comments.

But Apple could do a Wi-Fi only thing for the US(and other markets which don't support video chatting over cell networks) and video chatting over cell network and wi-fi for countries which do support it.
