what things calm you down and perhaps invoke a sense of contentment?

i usually sit back and read a book, or watch TV (something decent, HBO series or something without commercials if i can help it...thank you comcast OnDemand) included may be a glass of wine and or snacks. almost always involved are candles and incense. it seems silly but it helps, not sure why that is soothing to me. i used to always burn incense and stopped for a long time, recently i stumbled onto some really pleasant smelling ones and forgot how much i enjoyed that. there's something to the sense of smell. i'm picky though, i can't handle all incense. Nag Champa is my favorite, but i found some awesome ones at Cost Plus imports, such as Jasmine Lemongrass and Zen Garden... clean smells, not too heavy.

anyway, curious about the rest of you and your routines.

To relax I listen to some nice love songs(even though i'm not in love) or I just sit and rest my bones with a nice glass of apple juice or orange(whatever mood I am in at that time) and think...thinking always relax me.

Bless

I'm a reader. I have a spot in my kitchen, and I love to sit there, in as little light as possible, and read poems or look at books of paintings (or even write a little).

Coffee or whiskey make everything a little more real and and a little more beautiful.

I find great comfort in darkness. I like to sit alone in the dark and think, remember, forget -- to just listen and be.

And yes, I'm really this pretentious.

Well, reading of course.

And walks when the weather's good.

Inventing, too. I've got a number of patents pending... none personal (all for work). But inventing calms me down.

Also, oddly, ironing. I am by no means a neat person, not even vaguely fastidious, and I rarely iron anything. But.... ironing relaxes me.

There are, of course, non-family-forum-friendly answers that would apply as well.

ha "non-family forum-friendly answers" well there's always those. :p

you know, the ironing thing isn't so weird. it is a "problem" (wrinkles) that is almost immediately solved before your eyes. i have this same sort of thing with vacuuming. <shrugs>

The odd thing is that I don't care about the wrinkles. The act relaxes me, sort of like tai chi. It's the motion and the quiet except for the steam, I guess. I'm weird. ;)

Oh - pseudo-family-forum-friendly: massages. Giving or getting. Not a common occurrence, but I vaguely recall that they're relaxing.

Duff-Man says...I listen to music. When I really want to relax I will pick something appropriate at then burn some incense (yes, Nag Champa is a good one!) and turn the lights out, lay down on the floor and enjoy the mood....oh yeah!

Red, red wine......... that's it. Normally a bottle will have me ready for bed. If I'm smart about it I can usually avoid any repercussions the next morning too. Love it.

Paxil.
Sad, isn't it?
Actually I read. A LOT. 2-3 books a week. Has to be in bed, never in a chair. Getting lost in the world of words is the greatest catharsis.
That and masturbation.

Listen to appropriate music, read, light a candle, have some wine/hot chocolate/whatever I feel like or whatever is appropriate at the time, play my clarinet... Oh, and meditate too - if my body needs a break, I'll let my mind take over and do some of the work. ;) In general though, I find meditation very effective and beneficial - it's something people don't consider and investigate as much as perhaps they should. The mind is a very powerful thing.

Find a curvy road (easy when you live in a small hick town like Rolla, Missouri) and have some fun :D

I like driving, and find driving like a dumbass very relaxing, when in reality, I probably have more to worry about when driving like an idiot. Go figure

depends on my mood

an evening walk with a nice cigar does me just fine.

or a long hot shower.

and if i've got the spare $$, a nice massage.

most of the time though its a couple of hours at the gym.

my days of alcohol and illicit drug induced forms of consensual hedonistic relaxation are a distant memory.

drag.
