so as long as i turn off discover new wifi networks and only connect to the ones i know, this will be less power then just keeping it in 3G all the time?

Or is it that i need to turn off 3G and Edge when using wifi? or back and forth...

Yep. But use WiFi whenever possible - 3G / Edge/ GPRS are battery killers.

It automatically stops using 3G/Edge so don't turn them off when WiFis available.

Home and work - WiFi
Anywhere else - 3g

While ones on, I always have the other one off to save battery life.

When school starts up again, I'm probably going to be using 3g a lot more. No WiFi in the dorms =(

I use my MacBook Air if there is WiFi available, and 3G on my iPhone when WiFi is not available. So I pretty much only use 3G on my iPhone.

Usually 3G, because there aren't a lot of free wifi hotspots in Dallas. Since I want to save the battery, I turn off the wifi sniffer.
However, because I work in a basement, I use wifi at work.

Use wifi at home although there is a slight start up delay when you begin browsing (initially it uses Edge).

3G is non-existent in my area although AT&T charges for it because the 'iphone is 3G capable'. I wonder how they get away with charging (the extra $10 over the prior iPhone data plan) for something they are not providing.

Interesting comment earlier in the thread about the wifi searcher using more power. I wonder if anyone has any stats on the actual saving.

So I don't have to turn off 3g or edge when using wifi?

Will turn those off if wifi is available?

Thanks for the info.

Edit. Just saw the answer to my question. Sorry I didn't notice it before. Thanks again for info.

Do you know that iPhone customers get free Wi-Fi at all AT&T Wi-Fi spots? With the new auto-join feature that comes with OS 3.0, you don't even have to log in every time you get in an AT&T Wi-Fi area. Very useful. :)

Naturally, I use Wi-Fi anytime it is available and reasonably fast.

I use wifi as it's faster and prevents me from going over my data limit, though I have never even come close to doing that. I've never had any problems with running out of battery, so it hasn't been a problem at all.

At home I always use WiFi. When I am out and about I use 3G since there's 3G everywhere where I live.

The only time I would use 3G at home would be if the power is out.

WiFi uses much less power than 3G / Edge.

I have an iPhone 3G which is on standby for 10 days now (don't use it much cos I have 3GS) - connected via WiFi.

The iPhone does not stay connected to wifi as it sleeps. It reconnects when you wake it. So, if you have it in airplane mode it's not connected to anything when it is in standby.

Wi-Fi is always on for me, yet I turned off that stupid ask to join networks popup, it gets quite annoying. It's nice whenever I'm around the house to use Wi-Fi, so much quicker.

Whenever I'm not around any Wi-Fi, 3G it is.

I get really good coverage for both EDGE and 3G where I live, so usually I have 3G turned off to save battery. (I have had 3G on today, though, just to see the difference in battery life...it was only slight, and it wasn't a perfect test because I also just switched from manual to fetch email on three accounts.) My EDGE network is good enough for quick browsing and using apps that require an Internet connection. If I'm impatient or, say, watching a YouTube video or loading a page with a lot of data, I'll switch 3G on briefly. The WiFi at my house is broken at the moment, and I almost never spend a significant amount of time anywhere that free WiFi is available, so I rarely bother connecting to any of those networks. I only turn WiFi on in certain occasions, like at my dad's house, and only when I'll be browsing for awhile or downloading apps or something.

Yes I know that, what I meant was it has no SIM in it so its only means of connection is WiFI.

I seem to wind up on WiFi networks a lot of the time, which is fantastic because O2's 3G coverage is rather poor.

The constant WiFi popups when there are no usable networks available can be a little annoying, but at the same time it's much better to use WiFi if it's there so it's good to know :)

I don't live anywhere near a 3G area so I've never used it but I pay AT&T the same as those who do. WiFi much faster than edge but I turn off WiFi when leave WiFi areas.

I tend to turn WiFi off unless I need to use those WiFi-only apps.

The AT&T 3G network is pretty reliable here.

If decent WiFi is available, that. Otherwise; 3G or EDGE.

I don't know who in their right mind wouldn't, better battery life, faster data, etc.
