I've only burned two-dozen or so discs in roughly 2 years, but I've ripped about 150 CDs, first at 192kbps, then all over again in Apple lossless once I upgraded to a 1TB hard drive and had the room. I rip a few audio CDs a month in lossless, and I have about a 50 more in storage that I want to get to soon. I usually pick up a few CDs on trips, and I immediately rip them onto my laptop and put the disc in my luggage so I don't accidentally leave it somewhere. I've also been known to rip a few dvds when I'll be up at work late and can't stream Netflix.
I never had a very good experience with external CD drives. I used one once on an old desktop after a mishap upgrading its internal drive - the CDs I tried to rip ended up as very skippy mp3s.
