When the fan is at low rpm, 2000rpm, I can't hear anything from my MBP. I use it in class and its relatively quiet. almost silent. My older 1st gen MBP, used to be super loud, i could her the inverter, processor, fans, and hard drive. Bottom line, I believe that my MBP operates at near silent level. I tried to take my old 1st gen MBP in to apple twice, both times they sent it to a repair center and both times an apple repair technician ask me more about the problem. They said they "couldn't replicate the problem". I just had to live with it, until now. My new MBP Peryn is super quiet.

thanks for the response...

so...you mean, you can't really tell if the machine is turned on or off based on the sound? Is it absolutely silent as like it's never turned on?!

Funsocks,

Have you had a chance to look up the hard drive manufacturer and model #?

Click on the Apple button in the top left...go to "About This Mac"...click on "system profile" and it should be listed under ATA or SATA I think. I would appreciate it - thank you.

It's listed as a FUJITSU MHY2200BH.

I will get around to the temp tests. Be patient I'm a very busy man unfortunately. Just know that it's extremely quiet, and extremely cool (even when running 10 apps at a time.) I know most people talk about their SR MBP heating up their laps. No such case here. My lap is super cool right now and I have FCE open rendering video and I'm working in Illustrator and Photoshop as well.

can it make a cappucino?:D
seriously! play with it.. EXPLORE..
you'll love it for sure..i can't wait for mine to get here!

YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE MULTITOUCH!!! I haven't even opened my desk to spring for my trusty USB mouse yet. The trackpad is just so damn nice. I can honestly do everything that used to limit people by using trackpads (besides detailed CS3 work for obvious reasons) Seriously though. Anyone who is getting one soon should learn all the multi-touch gestures so when they get it they can pop it open and be familiar with them.

That really sounds awesome! Rather heavy apps and the CPU hardly brakes a sweat Temperature wise. I can finally use that thing on my lap without getting sweaty legs or 3rd degree burns!

Along with wanting to know about how hot this puppy can get, I would also love to know what sort of battery life you are getting on a single charge (and with what type of usage). There seems to be some conflicting reports about the battery life on these machines since Apple "changed" how they report them.

Also, any issues with a yellow screen? I know there is a separate thread on this topic, but since you have asked us to guinea pig you.....

Many Thanks.

Just trying to be helpful. I tested the screen with LCD test. There are no gradient issues or yellowing issues. The display is great. The battery life is decent. 4hrs using CS3 and FCE.

Hey guys I noticed that you want to test benchmarks, heat, and such on the new mbps. Well I have a new baseline prenryn mbp so just tell me what you want tested and I can do my best to accommodate you.

Have you checked out the temps yet with I Stat Pro?

Could you run switchresx and export the DDC file so we can find out who manufactures the display? I saw the 9c83 at the 5th Ave store today and it looked great. Would like to know who makes it...

Thanks!

Well.. I mean if you put your ear up to it and you in a completely quiet room, you can hear the fans and when the hard drive is in use. But my ears are pretty sensitive to weird sounds, i can hear electronics but no the rain falling (at least thats what my girlfriend says haha). Its pretty close to silent but not absolutely silent as if it was off. Hopefully that helps.

Thanks for your efforts. Glad to hear the yellow screen issues may be a thing of the past. And 4 hours of battery life is pretty darn good considering the processor intensive programs you were using. Did the computer get very hot or loud during that time?

i Have a 2.5Ghz, and when your using the internet then you cant hear a thing, when your watching a movie or playing a game, i can barely hear the fan if i have the sound totally muted, and i mean barely. Its is by no means loud, and when your watching a movie or playing a game obviously you have sound on so you cant hear the fan at all.

By the way, this is my first Mac and i feel like its X-mas since ive gotten it, part of it is because the computer is so great, the other part is im coming from a 500Mhz PIII lol.

The only thing that i find slightly annoying is when i wake it from sleep or turn it on or something like that, the disk drive makes a weird little "iiiiiii-eeeew" sound, just a quick little weird sound like that, but im pretty sure thats supposed to be normal because i saw it on apple support.

The model is 9C83. It does indeed look great. I'll go download switchresx and look it up though.

i got the 9c81 monitor. is this good? i couldnt notice any yellowing or irregularity of any sort on it though.
as for temp, mine stays at around 48 idle @ 2500rpm. it's only warm on the leftside being that HDD, airport, power connector are there.
aside from my battery having 7 cycles when i got it, and the uncertainty if the 9c81 monitor is good, i am deeply gratified with my 2.4 penryn..
