I’d love to see a visually 100% retro version of the iconic 128k Mac, with all the bells and whistles of today’s technology.
Yea, that’s me September 1984.

Warning for people who’d like to use external drives for homedirs:
If your homedir is not in boot drive you’ll get ZERO support from Apple on any os or sw problems and this undocumented switch of diskutil does not work:

Right, if you move your Home folder to an external drive and the drive is disconnected your Mac won't be able to boot correctly, that's normal behaviour.
About those permissions, I only suggested moving the Users Home folder, not anything else, yes, there's a warning, for good reasons, but you should always have a back up from your System, whether you tinker with your OS or not, it's irrelevant.

Stop telling us you have a commitment to the Mac when your actions show that's not true.
Start making your hardware more repairable so you'll actually show you care about the environment.

Apple have been saying for many years that they care about the Mac users, but actions show otherwise.
They are putting overpriced disposable appliances, that are not upgradable and not repairable.
That shows that they only care about making money and NOT about the environment.

A major upgrade to the entire computer line up. As if Apple would care about its computer line up...

1- A Mac Pro entry-level that is affordable for prosumers (starting around $2,300)
2- An iMac redesign and upgrade. (easily upgrade RAM and SSD).
3- A MacBook Pro 16, with non-soldered components, that you can easily upgrade RAM, SSD and Battery starting at $2,000.
4- A Mac Mini that you can upgrade SSD starting at $500
5- Better quality control overall.
6- Don't release Mac OS that it is NOT ready (CATALINA is unusable).
7- Fix the Mail app. Slow and buggy as hell.
8- Stop making ridiculous entry level machines with ridiculous specs (8gb Ram and 128ssd) and charging obscene upgrade prices for RAM and SSD.

Less catering to the Stock Market for determination of pricing and more paying attention to the actual consumer markets for price points that are more reasonable to move product in volume.

What I'd like to see (Possible):
  • Rectangular iPhone 12 Pro
  • Meaningfully updated iMacs
  • AirPods Pro v2 (with black option)

What I'd like to see (Won't Happen):
  • 4"-4.5" iPhone SE update

If Apple wants me to buy another iPhone, it will have to have the same form factor and features as the iPhone 5S/SE, it must include a headphone jack, it must have a decent modern processor and competitive amounts of RAM and internal storage and use a Lightning connector. These are non-negotiable.

Also, I will not buy another Apple computer or other product until the iPhone SE/2 or whatever is available and also, while I’m dreaming, reasonably priced.

...so odds are I’ve already bought my last Apple product.

As for other products, I’d love a reissue of the Mac Cube or Pro (pre-trash can aluminum style,) which are pretty much the only ones I’d even consider, and that’s provided they return with a real iPhone 5S-shaped SE-2. I don’t see any of these things happening, however.

Begs the question of course, how the hell does their stock price keep spiraling upwards?

Someone must like the ugly crap they’re foisting on people these days. :-(

In our What to Expect article that we shared yesterday, we covered everything that we're expecting to see from Apple based on current product rumors and historical release data.

New iPhones with 5G, OLED displays, and upgraded 3D triple-lens camera system with significant augmented reality improvements are in the works, Apple is working on updated Macs and iPads, and AirTags, an innovative new accessory for tracking lost devices, is on the horizon.

Want-2020-800x450.jpg

We could also see a lower-cost HomePod, new over-ear headphones, and there could perhaps be some surprises in store like an augmented reality headset or an ARM-based Mac, but those aren't sure bets for 2020 at this time. There are also some outlandish rumors, like folding iPhones and iPads, plus rumors about the Apple Car, virtual reality headsets, and other far off products continue to circulate.

We want to hear from the MacRumors community. What are you hoping to see Apple release in 2020?

Are there new features you're hoping Apple will bring in iOS 14 or macOS 10.16? New headphones? Updated Mac features? New additions to the iPhone lineup?

Let us know what you want to see in the comments, and make sure to check out our What to Expect article for a look at the current rumors. We'll learn more about Apple's 2020 product plans in the early months of the year, and as always, we'll be covering all Apple rumors in-depth here at MacRumors.

Our MacRumors forums are also a useful resource for discussing upcoming products and rumors, and with so many new products rumored for 2020, our forums are the place to be for discussions on what's coming.

Thank you to all of our readers and our forum members for making MacRumors the number one site for Apple news, rumors, and advice on the web. We wouldn't be here without you, and we look forward to another year of rumors in 2020. Happy New Year!

How about a stronger and reliable laptop/desktop OS? Mail to begin with. Mail has not had cutting edge development, sans a few cosmetic changes. Network tools has remained unchanged for nearly 10 years. Preview is becoming a joke with every release. Focus on the productivity tools that get the job done faster and simpler.

Why do people have such a weird hangup with spending 99¢, lol?
These same people that will go to great lengths to have scheduled times of the year they have to remember to do all this memory management maintenance wouldn’t think twice about spending $12 buying a coffee for them and a friend at Starbucks. The cream & sugar that’s going to be gone in 10 minutes is “worth it”, but that same amount to NOT have to do all those steps, not have to worry about hdd failure on the backup device, etc. & have everything seamlessly backed up for an entire year, somehow isn’t???
That breaks my brain.
Y’all think VERY lowly of what your time is worth or something.
So you fit your digital history for your lifetime to that 50GB for 99¢?
I could fit all my photo's to 2TB, but not everything else, so I'd anyway need a workflow for the rest, so why should I pay 1200€ per decade to Apple for making my backups myself?

Maybe because I brew my coffee myself?

Or an Apple-approved ATX motherboard to let me spec out all my own hardware. A nice PC motherboard is about $150...I'd easily go $500 or more for something similar officially from Apple.
Apple made and branded motherboard for hackintoshes!
That would be something!

Wow $1 a month sure sounds expensive when you just quote it out for an entire decade, lol.

Ugh, that reminds me- I need to cut back on eating.... I mean, if you think about it, I’m spending over a quarter million dollars on a lifetime of food. I should probably just stop.

Frankly, I’m hoping the rumored SE phone would look something like the ill-fated Essential phone (which looked like the iPhone 5).

Macbook Pro:
-Internal M.2 slot for storage upgrades (can be in addition to the Apple Soldered SSD, but also allow the OS to be installed on it if needed)
11 years ago Apple was able to put optical disc bay in mbp13", which was 24mm thick.
How about now, a more than a decade later, if they'd added hot swappable 2nd storage bay to a new 14" mbp!

Repairing permissions, with recent macos, is repairing them in your home folder. Which doesn't work, if your home folder is not on the boot drive. This is when nothing is disconnected after boot.
I'm using external boot drive now, including the system (macos) and home folder. Same for the backup drive and for the other homefolder. Macos (System and root Lib) and my App folder (latter one is 80GB for me) is duplicated to every boot drive. And the fast but too small int ssd in mini is unused.

If they really tried, could they squeeze a µSD slot into 12.9" ipad?
Since there has been this Files existing for a while...

Again, if my my digital footprint is over 2TB, why would I pay Apple to back it up myself?
It's easier to back it app all by myself than dividing files, which goes to iCloud and which not.
If you can konMari your digital life to 50GB, then I raise my hat to you, but still, that's a lot of work.

You know what I want Apple to do in 2020?

iPhone 12 Pro with 5G, Apple Pencil support and 1TB of storage

16" MacBook Pro with 5G support and actual ports(HDMI, 10GbE, SD slot, USB-A).

Apple TV 8K with the A12X or maybe A14X CPU, 6 or 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. If the A12X is truly as powerful as the XBox One S, having it in an Apple TV with enough storage and RAM might kickstart AAA game development. I'd love to play ARK, No Man's Sky, Battlefield V, and Anno: 1800 on an Apple TV.

Also, let's also get a HomePod with a display, so it can also be used as a HomeKit hub and control all my lights, cameras, door locks, from one place.

Lastly, bring back AirPort but with WiFi 6 and 5G(use 5G as a backup if your home internet goes down), and bring back Time Capsule(a NAS for Time Machine and iPhone backups)

I’m taken aback at most of these posts...

People seem to be hardware focused, instead of problem <> solution focused.

Think differently, grow, expect more.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think that's where Apple needs to improve is with hardware.

If this were any other company, I'd say software is where they should improve, but this is Apple, who IMO has great software already, it's just hardware that's lacking.

Amazon already has the Echo Show series, which is basically my ideal HomePod.
OnePlus has the 7T Pro 5G, which is closest to being my ideal iPhone design(apart from storage and stylus/pencil).
The nVidia Shield is the closest to being my ideal Apple TV(apart from RAM and storage).
The existing 16" MacBook is basically perfect apart from 5G, which I think will matter for laptops in the 2020's.
There are already plenty of NAS boxes that are almost perfect as Time Capsule replacements.
And lastly, there are a few WiFi routers at the moment that have 4G/5G capabilities.

If they could all integrate together as well as Apple devices do thanks to software, that would be great. But Apple is currently the only company with the resources to create both the compelling hardware, and the software required to pull it all together.

A working keyboard and a quad core in a reasonably priced 13" machine.

Problem: i need a replacement portable machine to do my job.
Solution: updated hardware that i can be confident will actually record the key presses i make
