Apple short of staff?? I mean it seems like a lot of dev time is being spent on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch trio. Why no love for the Apple TV? What's going on here? At least give us a hardware update, there are people who are just waiting to buy one (me included), but more needs to be done here. Don't get me wrong the recent Ui update was a pleasant surprise and my friend is very happy with it, I guess what's stopping me is the stupidly small internal hard drive. I hope Apple isn't forgetting the other products that don't run the iPhone OS, and the next Mac OSX had better deliver big time!

I would for the apple tv to take on a stereo component like appearance, rack mountable. Remember this is just me. Would love to see it long and about 2-3 high. Extra hard drive space. USB ports that allow you to connect other hard drives, 1080p playback native. DVR capable. That is all! :D

IMO, a DVR feature is never going to happen on the Apple TV.

As for extra hard drive storage, yes, that would be wonderful but I doubt that the content providers will allow Apple to enable the attachment of just any hard drive (i.e. over USB, eSATA, etc.). The "problem" with enabling external storage is that it would allow people to easily move the content to their Macs/PCs and the movie studios are worried that when that happens the movies will be shared over the internet once the Fairplay DRM is broken or removed. This may be one of the reasons why there is orders of magnitude more HD material on the Apple TV (exclusively) than there is through the iTunes application on the Mac/PC (because the Apple TV is a closed hardware/software platform and the Macs/PCs aren't). This also reveals a further risk with the Apple TV business model, since any purchase-to-own content that is exclusive to the Apple TV can't be backed up (and can thus be lost if the Apple TV disk drive fails).

Apple short of staff??...
Sadly, yes, they are always short of staff. I believe that Apple still has one of the highest revenue/employee and profit/employee ratios in the industry (or in any industry). Apple has traditionally worked their employees pretty hard. This is one of the reasons you won't see Apple on any list of the best companies to work for, Apple's benefits/work ratio is pretty low.

Compare revenue/employee at SAS (#1 Fortune 2010 100 Best Companies to Work For), Adobe (#42 on list), Microsoft (#51 on list) to Apple (not on the top 100 list):

SAS: $2.31B/11,043 = $209,182 ( http://www.sas.com/presscenter/bgndr_statistics.html )
Adobe: $340,168 ( http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials&btn=s_ok&mode=&symbol=ADBE&s_ok=OK )
Microsoft: $628,355 ( http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials&btn=s_ok&mode=&symbol=NASDAQ:MSFT&s_ok=OK )
Apple: $1,065,219 ( http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials&symbol=NASDAQ:AAPL )

Oddly, however, Google is #4 on the Fortune list but has an revenue/employee ratio of: $1,202,673. I guess Google is a win/win.

I like to see them can the product.

Then introduce powerline networking on the iMac.

Buy a separate module that accepts off the shelf av cables and plug it into your TV's power outlet.

Or why not just do a streaming box? Or hell about just support the Roku device and make a Touch remote app for it.

I guess get the cost down is the big thing. Not sure this thing is as much money as it is. IF the ATV was just ethernet then you could get your own powerline networking or wireless adapter. I know. I know. Not very Apple like.

More content and lower content pricing the other big deal as well.

I've been close to getting one, but at this point the price is still $229 and the device still has the same electronics as it did 2 or 3 years ago except for the hard drive.

Maybe a refresh needs to be done? If anything to assure us consumers that a new one isn't coming out 1 month after we buy the old one.

In any case, what Apple really needs to make is a standalone iTunes media and file server. This could work with Macs/PCs, the Apple TV, and the upcoming iPad. With a standalone file server the iPad should be able to function pretty much independently from a computer (i.e. no real need to pair the iPad with a full-featured Mac or PC). This server would offer expandable hard drive storage (multiple terabytes) and would sync all of your iTunes content with your Apple TV and the iPad (and also your Mac/PC if you had one). It would cost less than a Mac mini since it would have no need for video outputs, an optical disc, or large amounts or DRAM and it would use a fairly low-powered CPU (kind of a stripped-down net-top but with simple options for hard disk expansion).

I agree with this completely. Apple now has three stand-alone, always on appliances (AppleTV, Time Capsule, Airport Extreme). Adding server capabilities to the Time Capsule should be extremely easy. You can already access iDisks remotely, and this would be a great feature for the iPad. I currently keep all my movies on a hd attached to my Time Capsule and shouldn't need to have my laptop up and running just to stream.

Once that's in place, adding 1080p (for home movies) and additional internet sources (ESPN360, MLB.TV, Hulu) would be nice. Finally, enabling the USB port for third-parties would be a game-changer. I can understand the problems with adding DVR functionality to the AppleTV, but allowing elGato to port EyeTV.

I would like it to be larger so that it can use a desktop sata drive so we can get enough storage for all movies. Not being able to fry an egg on it would be a plus.

I'll happily pay more for a larger hard drive, just give us the option!

I meant that Apple wouldn't let anyone attach external drives because then Apple wouldn't be able to make more money off of larger hard drive options. People would buy a low-end Apple TV and just get a cheap external hard drive.

1080p compatible
Stretch / zoom 4:3 content

Just why would you want that? It is one of the best features of the ATV that it displays all material in its correct aspect ration on a 16:9 display. With my old DVD player I was always having to switch aspects so that 4:3 didn't get stretched on my TV (I really miss the SCART connection I had in the UK which handled the switching). I have 14:9 material which my TV doesn't handle so for the DVDs I have to lose a little top and bottom to fill the screen or have the picture window-boxed whereas my ATV rips of said discs display perfectly filling the full screen height and having small black bars down the side.

It is a crime to distort the image to appease your misguided belief that your whole screen is full. To quote my idiot brother-in-law: "I paid for a 42" screen and I want it all used so I need to get rid of the black bars...." Duuurrrr.

Yes, why? And fully agreed. Please no stretching. Why would anyone want to distort the original image is beyond me. I don't have an Apple TV yet, but hopefully Apple keeps it that way.

Haha, I know what you mean. A long long time ago, I had a friend whos Dad had zero understanding of home theater equipment and had the same type of thinking your friend had. It always annoyed the hell out of me.

Apple, do the right thing - fix the faulty ones, get the new ones improved in terms of the above issues or just scrap the whole project and admit failure. Only those, who do things, make mistakes.

(But even then, Apple should honour ongoing warranty issues).
