Back End of Beyond
Lately some of the perfectly innocuous comments I've made appear to trigger a ban from the moderators that will last days. What I'm curious about is why that means that as long as I'm signed in I'm not allowed to view forum comments (get the Oops message when I try) as well as not post any. Basically, in this case, I need to sign out to view any comments in a forum. This is less than ideal because that means I also don't see my notifications. Couldn't this be set up so I just can't post? Can someone enlighten me?

I'm not asking them to discuss my specific case. I want to know why banning someone locks them out of being able to view the forums. That would apply to anyone being banned. I can understand keeping someone banned from posting but not from viewing.

What you are describing is how things currently operate. One of the admins will need to look to see if there is a forum setting to allow what you mentioned.

Frankly the reason why that happens is that’s the default way Xenforo handles a ban.

I see how it’s weird. I guess they wanted to make sure the user knew they were banned, as temp bans might go un noticed if it only shows the ban when trying to post?

don’t have strong feelings about it. There might be a better system.

There's no way to do something like put up a banner that says "You've been banned until this day and this time from posting but still have view access to the forums."? That would work something like the current "Oops" message but still let you see comments.

I’ve never been banned (and I wish to never be), but I agree with the OP, it would make more sense to just don’t allow you to post for x time, but letting you read the site normally.

I never expect or want to be banned, but there are certain unwritten trigger words and non-PC views that will get you banned. I've stumbled across some recently. I've been trying to make a list but it varies with the moderator and how diligent they are on any specific day, so it's frustrating.

I never expect or want to be banned,
I wouldn't say banned, but rather moderated.

Moderation is done on an escalating scale. Someone's first violation will most likely cause them to receive a reminder, but if they ignore that and continue violating the rules - well then, at some point after receiving multiple reminders we'll start issuing suspensions. The suspensions start off small but increase if the member chooses continue to violate the rules.

Its the goal of the staff not to punish members, but rather having them post within the rules. That's why our initial communications are called reminders. Most of the time its a simple lapse of judgement and they just need to be reminded of what's permitted and what is not.

Some people it seems, don't read the rules, don't care about the rules, don't care about being moderated, and just post up anything to see if it sticks. To me that type of approach probably goes down as trolling. It's not as difficult as some make it out, to post in a respectful manner (within the rules) getting your point across and (mostly) being on topic.

You’re not wrong. But that’s part of the problem though, isn’t it? Members agreed to the terms of the website when acknowledge when they sign up, but then they claim they don’t understand the moderation/rules when they post something without understanding what is tolerated. And of course if you’ve noticed, those same members who made the same mistakes over time and time again, aren’t here anymore for a valid reason. They know the rules are, they just don’t care.
