Please. If you don't want to get a case, don't get one. If it breaks, your fault. How about you stick with your blackberry if its that much of a bother?

Statistically it's only a matter of time before something happens that causes you to drop your phone.
.

Nonsense. There is no truth in this argument whatsoever.

Statistically you will get into at least one car accident in your life. Insurance Underwriters have these actuarial numbers based on decades of compiled facts.

There are no statistics that guarantee you will ever drop your phone.

That's just rubbish.

Your every day lifestyle will dictate whether you need a case or not. Whether you use one or not doesnt make you a troll or anal. Yes there are those few exceptions, but I'd like to think that people who buy a case do so because they need one.

Wouldn't the number of broken phones you hear about indicate that yours is not the typical situation?

You want to know the secret to living forever? Not dying.

This is bad rational. If you count the number of broken phones you hear about, then divide that with the approximately 75 million iPhones sold, that's a damn bad ratio for your logic.

Remember, you hear nothing if a iPhone is not broken.

What does the need for a third party case tell us?
Flawed assumption. There is no need. It's a matter of personal preference. Just as it has been with any device, past or present -- not just the iPhone.

Wouldn't the number of broken phones you hear about indicate that yours is not the typical situation?
No. There's more to statistics than looking at forum posts, seeing a "bunch" of broken iPhone posts (and/or your anecdotal evidence) and then broadly proclaiming some sort of universal trend. This sort of armchair analysis is a perfect example of why statisticians spend years learning their trade. You need to consider that forum posts are always heavily skewed towards problems and many, many other factors that influence the numbers. Keep your day job.

The only ones I ever saw were vanity stockings, not actually providing real padding.
In my time doing corporate Blackberry support (back in the 7250 days that you're waxing nostalgic for) there were countless broken Blackberries turned in and my company had about 200 deployed. By your reasoning this would indicate that the old Blackberries were extremely fragile. That's not how BB's of that era are typically regarded even by your own account.

There were ruggedized cases for the older BB's as well whether you selectively recall them or not. We deployed them to our field workers.

So why are they using a scratchable exterior in the first place?
What non-scratchable material do you suggest?

And the reaction here seems to be the dogma of apple infallibility. It's technology, not a religion. We're allowed to question doctrine.
Disagreement with your flawed assumptions and arguments != Apple Koolaid. If you're going to try to play that card then it's pointless to even hold a discussion in the first place. I (and others in this thread as well) have never indicated that Apple was infallible. Your arguments are fallible. Learn the difference.

With the current arrangement the consumer has the choice. Don't need ruggedization? Good, you're set. Need it? Buy the appropriate accessory. Why should the majority have to deal with the added costs for undesired features?

now that I think about it, this looks like a nextel design

Personally, I'd be happy if they sold the bog-standard iphone for people who were happy with that and a ruggedized version for those who want more protection. An integrated, protected case would feel more natural and comfortable than any add-on.
