It can also send and receive texts, Siri works, and Apple Pay works. I just came back from the grocery store. Didn't take my phone, walked to the store listening to music from the watch, answered a phone call, got a couple of texts, and paid using Apple Pay. Apple and updated third-party apps work (weather (I use Carrot), stocks, ...)

Apparently, the thing can also make me run, all on its own, which even my best friend wasn't able to do. Damn rings.

Pretty confused by this - there is no interface anywhere to send a podcast to your watch, it is just a remote control for the iPhone app at this point - if you put your iPhone in Airplane mode all you get is a black screen with the grey Overcast icon looking for your phone, along with the time in the top right - am I missing something?

Right now the WatchPlayer app is the best solution as everything is handled locally on the watch, downloads are quick and the newest update even added the ability to download podcasts from the top 50 charts (podcasts you didn’t send the feed info to your watch of)
You are correct. I just turned off my phone and the app on the watch is a black screen. That sucks.

You said stream music without an iPhone.

Not stream music without an iPhone or any network connection.
Huh? The cellular watch can (or will be able to with the upcoming update) be able to stream Apple Music over cellular.

"stream without an iPhone or any network connection" - the definition of streaming is over a network. What exactly are you trying to say?

You can be connected to Wi-Fi and do it as well. You don't need an iPhone.

Several of the local parks nearby offer full Wi-Fi coverage. I can just use the Wi-Fi network to stream Apple Music on the watch, simple.

My statement is still correct. All Apple Watch models don't need an iPhone. You obviously need some kind of wi-fi coverage, but you don't need an iPhone.

You do for the small matter of setting up the watch.

You need an iPhone to set up an Apple Watch with LTE, what's your point?

I can go to any Wi-Fi covered area without my iPhone and use my watch on the network without the phone being anywhere near the watch. More and more global wi-fi coverage is available too. My hometown as 30k people with Wi-Fi in just about every major park in the area. I can use my Series 1 out there on the walking trails with my phone in my car well away from any bluetooth connection.

You also needed a Mac to setup the first few generations of the iPhone and needed one to setup pretty much any iPod (except the touch) - the iPhone for now is needed to setup and sync workout data and other bits of data at night, but it’s not tethered as much as it once was.

Yea right now WatchPlayer is the go to app for podcasts on the watch. Hopeful Overcast can add it back in the future.

The transfer process for downloading podcasts directly to the watch by wifi is pretty slow. It took so long I just said forget it and went on the run with my phone.

Just last night I was walking towards home, received a text message from a friend who said "we're at x, come join us." I asked siri to find me directions to x while listening to music over lte, and it worked without a hitch, without my phone. I've found that the combination of the S3 and Airpods (running WatchOS 4.1) is pretty well done.

One other thing that impressed me, WatchOS 4.1 flies on the new series 3.

Make sure you are disconnected from your iPhone otherwise it’ll override the fast method with the old horribly slow method. Best thing to do is to turn on AirPlane mode on your iPhone when you want to download your podcasts - it’s super fast on WiFi or LTE (downloaded Accidental Tech Podcast in 30 to 50 seconds!)

Edit: When connected to your iPhone I believe it is downloading it on your iPhone then sending it over (not 100% sure, just know you can’t be connected to your phone if you want a good experience, it’s an app designed to be used standalone and limits of watchOS make things like that happen when you connect to the iPhone)

That made a huge difference. Thank you!

Absolutely happy to help, it’s my favorite watch app right now just for how much it is pushing what the watch can do. You could if you wanted to never use the phone app as you can now browse podcast directories on the watch app and search the Apple Podcasts directory right on the watch. Pretty remarkable, the only thing I really hope he implements is the native Bluetooth headphone picker when you start playing without being connected first, I find myself going to the built in Now Playing app to start the episodes if it doesn’t see that I’m connected to my AirPods.
