They might say dude or guy. I suppose they could have said "chick" but is that offensive? His statement was clearly that a fashion person was rather useless for a technology company.

Dude, guy, chick, woman etc, would I imagine be fine (there has to be some way of describing someone after all), but the term "female", while obviously accurate and not inherently offensive, strongly emphasises the fact that the word was chosen consciously to highlight gender, making gender an issue.

Fair enough. My original comment didn't take that into account - I hadn't seen it.

So ... let's recap.

The woman from Burberry was paid a thousand million billion dollars to defect to Apple to posh up the retail experience.

We've had many reports of Day One of her first major test. Reports of clueless, ill-prepared staff. (Much like the ones online.) Watches that aren't charged. People being sent away after only trying two bands. Shops with insufficient stock, eg bands in only one size to try.

Exactly why was she hired and why is she being paid so much?

My experience was great at the Victoria Gardens apple store.

The guy helping me let me try on as many as I wanted. He fastened each one on my arm for me and gave me a few details on each band, very helpful. I finally just got bored and thanked him graciously. He seemed a little nervous handling the watches, as i am sure he was with so much money at his fingertips. He said this is "new for us as well", very nice guy.

Tried on

Link bracelet
classic buckle
milanese loop
leather loop
sport black

there were no others I wanted to try or he would have kept them coming.

After I went over to the display case and looked at the gold watches. One very nice female employee asked me if I wanted to try it on, but I had no desire to so just said no thank you i have tried a few on already. I then went over to the new MacBooks and checked out the watches on the wall that were functional.

Great experience and very friendly staff.

i bought the classic buckle watch last night, and a link bracelet band.

Thank you.

Some people will try and make anything into a sexist remark to try and gain points against you.

If I had used the phrase "It" then that would of be deemed even more offensive :)

If we wish to raise the sex issue, which I don't. it's funny how people get on their high horse and still ignore the fact that genders still do, for the majority still stick within long standing roles even to this day.

If the UK, even now teachers admit it's the boy who are more into the technical side of learning computing, "generally"
I don't see why admitting sex's are different and, in general tend to have different interests is such a god awful thing.

Overpaid, pointless, self important female employed as fashion expert for computer firm that specializes in advanced technology.

If you can't see the problem with that IN GIANT RED LETTERS, then I'd get some glasses :D

What does being female have to do with it?

Because this is just a reunion of misogynists that can't stand the thought of a successful woman.
Yeah, that's the vibe I'm getting. Between the thread starter not even being able to bring himself to use her name, and the guy who slipped "woman" into a long list of insults, this thread makes me feel icky.

What does being female have to do with it?

Because she's a female! Doh

If it was a bloke, I would have said, some dumb self important guy.

And you would not have mentioned it at all.
You would never have said "what does being a male have to do with it"

Stop trying to twist things to your own agenda just to try and make trouble

I think she is doing just fine. These issues happen with every release.

Roger that. I'll see myself out.

Not sure anyone was being misogynist, but even if they were, it was just one person. Personally, I'd love to see her succeed and make Apple even better at retail than they are now and help branch out into new areas of wearable, fashionable tech.

That said, people's experiences today don't give much confidence that she's helped the retail experience, much like John Browett didn't :(

Between the thread starter not even being able to bring himself to use her name

Maybe the thread starter forgot her name and couldn't be arsed to Google it. Maybe he called her a woman because, er, she is one. Maybe if he'd described her as a "person" that would have set off a whole new set of baseless allegations of sexism. And it would have led to awkward pronoun use.

As for the people defending her, apparently you have low expectations. If someone's being paid what she's being paid, I expect something world-beatingly good.

So ignore the people who had a positive experience and just cherry pick the more negative experiences? What's fair about that? This is her first brand new product launch. I think we could cut her a little slack. Sheesh.

I'm not twisting it. I don't have an agenda. It's just interesting all the threads dedicated to hating on her when there wasn't this kind of heat on Scott and calling him out on his gender.

The watch is a brand new territory for apple and launching it is not like anything else they've done before. I'm not saying Angela is the perfect VP, but there's only so much she can do in regards to supply constraints and how managers train their individual employees on a product launch for something unlike Apple ever sold before.

But based on your other comments it's clear you think boys should be doing the tech stuff and girls should stick to fashion.

There shouldn't be negative experiences. She's paid millions of dollars. She's had months and months to prepare. The whole point of hiring her was to get this absolutely right.

I don't think that.
Just accepting reality as it still is, even in 2015.

As was said.

If someone said "This PERSON is useless"
Then we'd have some trying to make an issue out of calling her a person instead of identifying her correctly.

Plenty of useless managers of either gender around these days.
I'm sure many of us know one of more personally.

People criticise men all the time. Republicans endlessly criticise Barack Obama. Is that because they're sexist and hate men? Is it because they're racist and hate black people?

Or are they making what they regard as legitimate criticisms of the effectiveness of a person in the public eye?

She has nothing to do with the innovation of new products. She's the head of Retail. It's her job to ensure when customers visit the stores they leave happy.

Now, I don't know about you, but moving the watch to "online exclusive" for launch seems like the stores couldn't quite get coordinated for the launch. Her only job really.

And don't even get me started on the new Retina MacBook not being in stores today, for sale or demo units

Why even have Apple Stores except for the Genius Bar then??

We have demo units in Texas.

I absolutely hate the new layout of APple store (went in today for a 'try on' appointment)

hate the fact you have to jump through MULITPLE hoops to get an apple watch.

hate the fact The new Macbook was released today and was more mysterious (even to Apple employees) than the Big Foot.

do I blame the new person who was hired to head the retail and online store?? HELL YES.

who cares if it's a girl or guy, failure is failure

When those Republicans say things like communist muslim etc etc... then yes they would be considered racist.

But that's not what we're talking about here. I didn't say Ahrendts was too pretty to have a big job like running Apple's retail operation. I just referred to her as a woman. Because she is one. And her name is difficult to spell.

And I don't hate women or think they're ill-suited to executive office. I'd vote for Hillary in an instant.

I just think that there is never an Apple launch that isn't without it's problems. So I don't think the criticism of Angela is fair. I also like how they've handled the this release sans the MacBook TBQH. Apple will learn from it and tweak their process going forward.

When isn't there a time that somebody hates whatever it is Apple is doing? I'd say never. No matter what Apple does someone is going to complain that they should be doing something else.

I've been brand loyal to Apple since 1988. A couple of years I bought an iMac and it had a few dead pixels. They sent a replacement, without argument, even before they'd received the faulty one back from me. The replacement had a few dead pixels, too. They sent another replacement. Immediately. I had three iMacs. Phenomenal customer service.

People criticise Apple because they love it so much they want it to be the best it can be. And because Apple itself sets such high expectations.

And because it charges a massive premium for its products. And pays Ahrendts millions of dollars. Millions.

To give someone the benefit of the doubt- I think his point was more someone- anyone- who's previous history was in women's fashion doesn't seem like a good fit for a technology company. Not her gender, just her background.

Yet John Bowett, her predecessor, who came from an electronics retailer, was a disaster.

She really did a great job at Burberry and with a very Apple like approach. I think she may be a good fit.

Staff was nothing but pleasant, store had all options available, I tried on 2 watches which is what we were t Of in advance would be allowed. Sounds like someone needs to find a different hobby because successful wealthy women hater doesn't look good on you.
