You completely missed the point of the OP. But I gotta admit nothing more ironic than caring enough about someones opinion that you ask him why he cares about other people's phone. Yooz a funny fella.

I didn't miss the point. I just wanna know why he cares what other people do with their phone. I love the design of the 4 and 4S and rock it without a case. Most people that do get cases for their phones just wanna make it look different from the next persons phone.

he cares because he does. It's hard to explain why one cares about things. Why do I like rainbows and puppy dogs? Because I like them? it is what it is. The thread isn;t about who cares and why, anyway.

I use a case on my 4S beause with my 4, the Camera Lens got scratched to hell just from it being set down on a table.

I go back and forth between a bumper and no case. The damn thing is so slippery without a case, though, it slides off tables, arm chairs and laps, almost like it hydro-planes. And I know one short drop on the concrete getting out of the car and it will be all over.

It's a dense, heavy little glass object and it really should have a case of some sort, but a case makes it look even more square and boxy than it already is.

people like change the appearance of their phone from time to time. A case/bumper will definitely will help do that. So it's not just about preventing damage anymore. It probably was about that a long time ago, but not now.

I think my Incipio case enhances the look and feel of my iPhone. It's also great to customize your look when everyone has an iPhone, the cases tell them apart.

I use a case, but mostly so I won't drop it; I find the back too slippery for me. Same thing with my MBP; I use a case so I won't drop it - the bare MBP is too slippery for me, especially in summer.

I think the OP makes a good point. I rarely see an iPhone without some sort of cover on it. Seems to defeat a large part of owning an iPhone - the design.

To make a mobile/very droppable device out of 85% glass does seem rather daft.

SO agree with this. Very annoying. It smashed a plate once when it slid off the arm of the sofa onto a plate on the floor.

I've had my iPhone 4 for less than a year and have had 3 cases wrapped around it. Two lived tragic lives. They were burnt, cut and deeply scratched. They got to the point that duct tape wouldn't fix them. This last one seems to be holding up well though. It has the port covers I need to keep the metal chips and grinding dust out. It also can take a welding spark or two without flinching. My phone lives in my pocket, it takes a beating sometimes. But at the end of the day, I can take the case off to clean the metal out of it and my phone looks brand new. Much cheaper to replace a few cases than a new phone, no?

Maybe. But to me a case is detrimental enough to the whole user experience that I prefer to just take the chance. $200 for an oow replacement won't kill me. I am generally pretty careful with my electronics, so the risk is fairly low. It's not really the same as driving without seatbelts, riding without a helmet, having one-night stands without protection, etc...

I do agree with the OP though. If the design is so fragile that it requires a case, there's no point to the design. I would love it if they went back to the original design and implemented gorilla glass.

Detrimental? The case enhances the UX.

The competition has already passed you in performance.

There has yet to be any phone released that has beaten the iPhone 4S in any CPU/GPU benchmark. This is an indisputable fact and been discussed here quite a few times. Considering the iPhone 4S was released 6+ months ago, can you explain why you say the competition has passed Apple in performance?

The Android browser has beaten iPhone Safari in some JavaScript tests, if that's what you're basing your conclusions on, your interpretation is incorrect. Winning in a Browser JavaScript test does not mean the CPU/GPU of that machine is faster.

For me I always use cases. Even have a otterbox on my iPad. I only care about the functionality of my electric devices and I'm not making any fashion statements. I want my gear in excellent condition when I go to sale it. I love it when I see cracked iPhones being sold on Craigslist list and the morons are still trying to get top dollar; should have had a case on it.
Apple made the phone look very good but it's also very fragile. Some cases like those morphie battery cases add double the battery life and protection. And remember, that "droolworthy design" is almost 2 years old. Maybe a case would freshen it up.

The iPhone just flat out breaks when dropped one time? HA! My moms iPhone 4 most not have gotten the memo. I myself have seen her drop it 4 times on tile floor. Has it broken/cracked? Nope. I have dropped mine twice since I've had it, one time with a case and another without the case. It's not broken.

I'm running my iPhone 4 without a case right now. Sometimes I want a different feel on it and change the look on it so I put my case on it. In about 2 weeks my case will be back on it. Another 2 weeks later I'm sure I'll take it off. About every two weeks is the way I seem to do it.

Just because your iPhone (not saying it was) or you saw a stupid video on YouTube of people breaking their 4(s) on one drop means absolutely crap. I can go on YouTube and find a video of any other device out their breaking. You're just picking on Apple. You find a video of a 4(s) being dropped and breaking on YouTube and then I'll go and find a video of a competitors phone being dropped and broken on YouTube. Sometimes you get lucky and nothing happens to the phone and sometimes you don't. I myself think the 4(s) is a pretty tough phone. If you are dropping your device that much or that hard then I would start trying to find a different to use your device as it is not the device, it's the user.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it. At work I only know one person that has a case on their iPhone 4(s). The others run their iPhone caseless. Funny thing is at my work and my area, I see a lot of other phones running cases with the iPhone most of the time not running a case. I'm just saying what I see in my area.

Why do people go on about how droolworthy their phone looks and then immediately slap on a big 'ol case on it.......
Why do you care?

how so? He's joining the coversation (what you're supposed to do on public forums) and added his thoughts. I'm wondering if this is what OP really spends his free time thinking about. I have thousands of thoughts a day and never has one been "I wonder why people use a case on their iPhone". Kinda sound like a "I hate apple" rant to me

The OP asked a question and Jordan and I are too. He asked why people use a case then went on to call Apple arrogant ("get off your high horse")and then let us all know he thinks iPhone has been "passed in performance", and we are asking why he cares. Valid question to OP (just as valid as you believe his question is)

I was never one to put a case on my phones, ever. And it took me a REALLY long time to find a case I liked for my 4S. Personnally, I would rather not have a case on my phone at all. So, like your OP, why would someone who enjoys the look of the phone itself put a case on it? Well, why would a phone company design a mobile device using one of the most fragile materials as the main structure of the phone? In other words, why would you use 2 panes of glass as the main form of the phone? Glass on the front I understand, but all the way to the edge with no protection, really? Why is glass on the back necessary at all?

Some people like to use sublte cases to give their phones their own personal touch. Other people want to protect their phones, considering the entire thing is made of glass. To me, I think the phone is perfect naked, but if I drop it, I'm screwed. Do I like the added peace of mind knowing that I have some sort of protection on there? Sure, its not much but it'll do. I like the subtle change my case did to my phone and really enjoy the look of it now. Personally I think, with the case I chose on it, is how the iPhone should have looked to begin with. Maybe not entirely but somewhere along the lines. I think the glass on the back is f'in stupid. But thats me.

I use a case on my 4S but I made sure to get one that keeps the integrity of the design intact as much as possible. But I haven't had an accident with my phone yet so can't say how much protection the case is providing.

I've read that Jony Ive absolutely hates iPhone cases, so it will be interesting to see what the next iPhone design is.

This is the reason I praise Nokia for their N9 design.

Not does it only look great and premium, but it is also an extremely durable design. They've managed design a phone that addresses durability and aesthetics too.

I'd like Apple to try themselves at polycardonate unibody design in their next endeavor.

And posters that said people like to change the look of their phones are correct. That's why many people have 2-3 cases.

A co-worker of mine has an HTC. Not sure what model but I know the back is plastic and the font isn't glass. Anyway she has a bulky clear plastic case for the phone and a protector on the screen so it doesn't get scratched. I'll take my iPhone 4S with an InCase case and no screen protector over that any day.

I spend $15/mo on geek squad black tie protection to not use a case and so far I'm getting taken for my money. I've dropped my phone 10+ times on concrete and still no shattered screen which it seems many people are convinced an iPhone 4/4S explodes when it touches the ground.

not exactly polycarbonate, but durable and beautiful nonetheless.

Beautiful, but extremely slippery and scratches very easily.

I use a bumper on my iPhone 4. I didn't use cases for my previous phones. I use the bumper because the iPhone 4 is obviously more fragile than other designs I have used, and is uncomfortable without. I am hoping the next iPhone is redesigned to make it more durable and comfortable to hold, so that I can return to no case.
