My source is not wrong on no iMac 27 5K yet, but right on the smaller just not 21, but 23.8 4k.(i admit he never told me the exact size) , only the smaller iMac will be the first, today he give me final details : new Macintosh: 23.8" igzo 4k2k resolution sdd only dGPU optional (base version with i5/iris pro gpu), all new keyboard/touch pad combo.

Some *journalist* will kill their *sources* soon.

I'll be contacting the police soon to let them know they should be looking for a dead Apple whistleblower....although can you murder imaginary people?

Anyway, I am very surprised Apple pulled the trigger on a 5k panel as I thought they'd go with 4k. Lots of doubt whether anything other than mouse cursor will run smoothly on this thing but color me impressed nonetheless especially since it's shipping today. The dell 5k announced a month and half ago is nowhere though it probably uses the same panel as Apple and Apple has sucked up all the supply. I can't wait to see it in person. Look forward to s standalone monitor to replace a 30" cinema display.

It will be interesting to see how Apple is driving that many pixels... dual DP1.2 outputs, DP1.3, or single DP1.2 with lower refresh rate?

I admit Im wrong on the screen size, new Macintosh to be 23.8 4k2k ssd only base model i5+iris pro, top Model i7+nVidia 980m; ssd only, soldered ram. Take that...

Horrible, horrible source. I would unfriend them immediately.

Once upgraded to the i7, 16GB ram and 295mx, its a pretty impressive piece of hardware. The price is high, but given the display and the general awesomeness it might be alright.... I suppose seeing it in person might make sense though before buying.

am i the only one who thinks putting r9 290 series is a fail?
i mean my 780m is more powerful !!
wtf?

No you're not.

You want to be gaming at 1440p with 5k, and the AMD card will most likely still keep iMac users locked in at 1080p unless you're willing to reduce image quality. That screen impacted the rest of their hardware choices in trying to keep the price at a reasonable level.

My guess is apple saved quite a bit of money by ditching Nvidia and AMD giving away the ancient leftover 290x chips.

Just ordered one with the $250 upgrade to m295x. Not a gamer, other than minecraft, so we'll see how it performs.

"When compared to mobile Nvidia GPUs, the M290X performs a bit below the GeForce GTX 780M and slightly above the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M."

to be honest i was 100 sure it will be 980m since nvidia did such a great job with that chip that is almost as powerful as desktop
But no!!!! they had to put that crappy r9 OMG I'm so disappointed (((

Gamers aren't the target for the retina iMac. If you're a serious gamer, you shouldn't be looking at UHD unless you can put dual/tri/quad SLI/Crossfire into your system. None of the single GPU including Maxwell can handle UHD. I doubt Apple is trying to meet the expectations of a consumer that can't be met right now within the iMac product line. This thing is for power home users who will use it for photos or videos, not dedicated gamers. It'll be like the first gen retina MacBook Pro - it will be adequate but just barely. And it'll stutter here and there. If you want buttery smooth, you need to wait for the refresh.

noone is expecting gaming at 5k resolution
what drives me crazy is why put an old generation crappy card that performs less then previous iMac nvidia cards?

Complete speculation but uncertain Nvidia supply? Desktop Maxwell only launched a month ago and is hard to find in the US (though apparently readily available in Europe so this may be more a distribution thing). Laptop maxwell just launched but Apple would have set the iMac spec long ago when Nvidia may not have been able to guarantee Apple the quantity it needed. Apple has been burnt before when it couldn't ship a product because of component shortages - actually didn't that happen last December with the refreshed iMac? I think Tim Cook publicly said he regretted launching the iMac at the end of the year and they should have waited till the new year.

As for why Apple wouldn't use last gen Nvidia, they may be discontinued with the launch of the 900 series or it's just ruled out for marketing reason - you can't launch a new iMac with a part that's already been superseded.

very interesting, i think the 295x could be quite the performer.

It's the full Tonga XT chip with 2048 stream processors, which is the same chip used in the cutdown desktop Radeon HD 285 with only 1792 stream processors.

no its not
its not at all
it will on the same level as 780m because 290x is less powerful then 780m
The only released numbers are teraflops. Apple says the 295x has 3.5TFLOPS. NVIDIA says the desktop 970 has 3.5 TFLOPS.

Based on those numbers, it is equal to the desktop 970, which is actually pretty decent. In the same league as the coveted 980m.

Of course the TFLOPS are not the whole story, so one has to wait for benchmarks.

According to this the desktop Radeon 285 has a Tonga Pro instead of Tonga XT.

It's the same chip. A fully enabled Tonga has 2048 stream processors (M295X) while the cutdown version (Radeon HD 285) has 1792.

Ok I have a somewhat silly question concerning the video card performance on the retina iMac.

The only game my wife and I play is WoW (I play Starcraft and Diablo from time to time as well). How do you guys think the upgraded video card option will run WoW at a lower resolution than the native resolution on the new iMac? I'm hoping that since WoW isn't cutting edge by any means combined with running it at a lower than native resolution we will be able to play WoW relatively smoothly.

Right now we use our 2012 rMBP's to play and they run the game just fine. Some settings turned up a bit but mostly medium settings with a slightly lower than native resolution....hoping to be able to play the game with settings turned up a bit from where we play at right now and am just curious if the consensus would agree whether or not we might be able to with the new iMacs.

Please reference your source of information on that.

Just read any review of the Radeon HD 285. They should mention what the full Tonga is.

It also makes sense that we haven't seen the release of the desktop Radeon HD 285X if they all are going to Apple.
