There is still no good way to opt out of autosave/versions and use the standard “Save As…” functionality that worked great all the way through Snow Leopard.

Finder windows routinely “forget” what view state they are in, and switch from icons to list, or start showing the toolbar which had been hidden, for no apparent reason after restarting or waking from sleep.

Yup, those two frustrate me too, along with the system sometimes deciding to reload all my apps after a reboot despite deselecting the option to do so.

So what made you move and what grinds your gears with Mavericks?

I tried to go from Snow Leopard to Mavericks to get text dictation.

The solution I came to was to keep Snow Leopard on one partition and use it for 95%+ of my daily work.

I also have Mavericks on a second partition, and use it occasionally to review apps that won't run on Snow Leopard.

What grinds my gears about Mavericks is that all the crisis reports about it are entirely preventable, but neither Apple nor the Apple community seems much interested in saving all those Mac users from their suffering.

It appears the only method of addressing this problem that is approved by the Holy Mother Ship and her faithful follower Apple fan choir boys is that users should have their Mavericks crisis first, and then we should help them one by one by one by one by one, in the least efficient manner possible.

This reality provides a window in to the sad state of Apple culture today.

or- an alternate reality would be that you're suggesting nothing should ever change and a user shouldn't be expected to adjust to changes..

so you learned some things about snow leopard and feel comfortable in there.. that's great..

but don't be so blind to that fact that today, some 'no change' mindsets are learning mavericks and in 4 years from now, they'll be saying the same exact thing you're saying only "i use mavericks for 95% of my work because blahblahblah"

try to write this off as fanboichoir all you like but what i'm saying has nothing to do with apple.. it's a bigger picture than that.

And when it does that, it never gives you any indication when it's done doing it. This was a problem with ML too, but jeepers it's annoying to have to wait an indeterminate number of minutes after the desktop becomes visible before the Mac starts responding non-drunkenly to mouse and keyboard events.
I'd sooner see a bright red screen with a big black X over it than the current faux-ready-to-go desktop imagery.

So far I've coexisted with the versioning and auto save system, but today when I tried using preview to resize a photo that was too big for upload to a particular site, when the files were on a flash drive (which does not support versioning) I could adjust the size, and it would become a smaller file MB wise, now that the files are on my computers hdd, I do the same thing and the files never get smaller because versioning takes over... So I have to waste 15 minute pushing the files back onto a flash drive so versioning will leave the files alone!

hmm.. i don't see that

• 200KB jpg 600x400 on my desktop
• open in preview
• change size to 50x33
• close file

it's now 5KB

Big thumbs up from me here! If the system is still booting up then there should at the very least be a "wait" cursor, not a pointer that doesn't do anything.

Um, thanks for replying, but I said no such thing and you are arguing against an assertion of your own invention. Good luck debating yourself, I hope you win!

Yup, I'll be using Mavericks full time someday, no doubt. Probably around version 10.9.23, when they finally get it working.

thanks for the support.

i thought you were replying in response to the gist of thread prior to your post..
but i guess you were replying to the OP?

regardless, it's not entirely clear what you're talking about.

See on mountain lion, with the files on the flash drive, I could hit adjust size, just click okay without doing anything and save it and it would go from 8mb to 6mb. On my computer however it wouldn't recompress the image.

weird.. if i open a jpg in preview which is on a flash drive (usb) then edit it, upon trying to close the window i get this:

usbVersion.png

what application are you using to try to adjust the size?

[edit] but then again, i might not be fully understanding the problem you're having.. i get it that you want to resize or compress an image to something smaller.. but i might be a bit hazy on the details after that. ;)

Doing it in Preview, get that same dialog however for some reason on this computer doing the same action it resulted in no change in file size. Anyway I ended up using ResizeIt to drop the file sizes. So just an odd inconsistency.
