LOL, such an old thread
OP was in 2005 and this resurrection addresses a post from 2007, nearly 10 years ago
Pretty sure both posters are dead now if they didn't start eating

Your body gets in "ahhhh he's starving me!" mode and next time you eat it will store lots of fat. So, not eating is a bad way to lose weight and very bad for you in general.

_Emerson

Noted old thread. No idea of the age of the OP, but eating less appears to be the only way for older people (me) to lose body fat, but I agree fasting long term is not good.

I lost 4 stone (56 lb) last year.
I neither fasted or starved myself.

If you want (need) to change the way you look, there are better ways to do it than starving yourself.

I went from 250+ pounds years ago to 150 pounds today by simply changing my diet and adopting an exercise regimen.

Well... not through lack of food in the house, but lack of good food in the house I haven't eaten since 6pm yesterday which makes it around... 28 hours (I think, I've never been too good at maths) of no food.

I have been drinking lots of pure orange juice though. which is high in sugar so my blood sugar levels should be okay. I may not even be eating until breakfast tomorrow morning, where i'll only have cereal.

um. so yea, what happens if you don't eat? how long until I pass out :D not that i'd want that. but im happy right now. strangely enough.

I've gone a few days without food here and there, just can't eat sometimes.. You don't pass out, but u *do* feel hungry, just don't know what to eat..

I've not drank water for ages either,, i just drink coke and that's it..

Since the past few days I didn't feel hungry .Also , I have lost that appetite that I had before .

I have been diagnosed with gastritis one month ago .

People that go on diet to lose weight can be bad for you, because your body starts to eat way your muscles. Also if you have bit of a stomach and go on a diet it can reduce fat else where!! And you don't want it at all only area you want. When you do this you have no control over it.

Well to reduce stomach fat you must work you apps that is sit ups and push ups. You also want stomach muscle firmness not people that go on strict diet and become skinny fat.

Running or jogging two times a day does not cut it you have to GO TO THE gym and work out.

This is why it is important to have an understanding of nutrition and how the body uses food items such as protein and complex carbohydrates. It is possible to obtain the necessary protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats while on a calorie deficit diet for the purposes of maintaining muscle mass while reducing body fat - bodybuilders all over the world do this all the time through bulk and cut sessions.

This is a common misconception, you cannot target fat loss.. it doesn't work that way.

This is also incorrect. I know numerous people who have reduced their body fat percentage through proper diet and exercise without visiting a gym. And, I emphasize "proper diet", you cannot out train bad nutrition.

A bodybuilder stomach is going to be different than a swimmer or sprint runner coming out of the Olympics. These people are professional athletes competing in the Olympics. Are they fat or have a stomach no. But they do not have bodybuilder stomach or stomach of really good professional athletes MMA fighters.

You are free to believe what you want, of course. However, my medical training shows your previous advice to be incorrect.

well i gave in! 10 minutes ago I had a bacon butty, real butter, english muffins (god that sounds like its from a Carry On film) and yea. just nice :)

My mum said that not eating does some detox thing to your body and is recommended to fast for a day every so often.

my stats now are;
no sleep> 49 hours (i just wanted to beat 48 :D)
no food> 29 hours
no drink> probably 30 minutes :p
no football> a decade!

my usual eating habits are no breakfast, little dinner, huge tea. ive been exactly 10 stone for the past 5 years.

10 stone is about 140 pounds?

eh, i regularly go a few days here and there with no food in me. why? i dont know, partly because there is nothing appealing around, and partly because i just don't notice it.

i eat one full meal a day, snack a bit for the rest of the day if i am hungry.

i know that my eating habits are considered horrible, and that its not good for me, but i haven't lost any of my muscle mass, and i actually have more energy and feel better about myself than ever before, but i am no guide to go by on this.

the past 24 hours as an example:
last night i had some pizza for dinner, maybe some chips later on as a snack, and have had nothing to eat all day today, will be having some dinner in a bit when i get around to cooking.

thats everyday for me. eh im just wierd (being depressed doesnt help i suppose)

I'm interested in how this turned out. This is my exact eating situation at the moment. You still alive?

I think "do you still drop in here to post occasionally and check the community out?" is a better way of phrasing this than the blunt "are you still alive"?

And, on the topic of anorexia, a lot of the time, especially with female teens, it is about trying to exert some degree of control in your life where you feel you have little control; food is simply the means - the method - chosen to exert and express this control.

Based on my survival training (USN, decades ago), 3 days of no/minimal food, you experience not so much extreme desire for food, but do experience serious loss of energy, lethargic. Not helping is when being pushed by people with whips. ;) Currently I have an aquaintence at the gym with a man who has dropped 50 lbs on a calorie restricted diet, eating 5 teeny snacks a day and he has no energy, but manages to eke out maybe 10 laps in the pool. As others have said, if calories are restricted as a method to lose weight, you must push your body to burn calories, or it will try to hang in to everything.

...I see now old thread.

True but still valid. Loosing weight is simple maths.
Put in less, burn off more results in loosing weight.
What works for one might not work for the next, but the basics are the same.

But here's the tricky bit that most people get wrong.
If you go on a diet and lose weight but then return to you're previous eating and lifestyle choices once you're reached your goal weight (or before!), you will put weight on.
If you want to maintain a weight lose you have to change your behaviour permanently.

Agreed, except I’ll add that besides simple math, there is metabolism factors, and apparently good or bad gut microbes have an effect on your efforts. When I was young and exercised, the weight fell off me. Now, no, not like it did. Diet plays a much bigger part in weight control than when i was 30 years old.

Funny. I'm the slimmest I've ever been. I've always been large.
I have an underactive thyroid and not a very active lifestyle.
So now I eat an ultra low diet and try to do a bit more exercise. But I'm now for probably the first time in my life about the right weight.
