X works on White Star, but it is incredibly slow and video playback doesn't work.
I must be behind on the times because I'm unfamiliar with White Star, is it in the ports repo or somewhere else for download? Or does it need to be built from scratch?

@alex_free's DCDIB program is an eternal godsend. I wanted to run an emulator on my Dreamcast but I couldn't get it to work via an SD card adapter so I turned to one of my iBook G4's and burned a CD.

As usual, you just select the .CDI file to be burned and DCDIB gets to work.

A few minutes later, I had a successfully burned CD-R to use on the Dreamcast.

For those who are curious as to what's happening here. The Dreamcast is running an emulator that provides a Sega Master System/Mark III/MK2000 hardware environment within which games originally produced for the first-gen MSX computer range are able to run. This is possible because the aforementioned 8-bit Sega hardware is backwards compatible with its predecessor, the Sega SG-1000 - whose spec is a near match to that of the original MSX and the ColecoVision console for that matter.

I seriously considered tracking down an MSX machine or a Sega Master System with a flash cart but then I learned about this emulator and DCDIB saved me the hassle and money. What a great place the Dreamcast's homebrew scene is.

Gotta love the GUI aspect of the original releases. Glad it’s still working well for you friend.

Everyone thought cd burning software that was portable for Linux, that would work on every distribution with one release was impossible!! I proved them all wrong. I honestly constantly check to see if anyone encounters a portability bug or anything but it’s just been crickets, which is a good thing!
 
Should there be thermal paste here? There's some kind of thermal pad here. 733 MHz

After 20+ years of the thermal pad (film) in place… maybe time to soften the film and clean with 91% alcohol (or greater) before carefully removing the film — without scratching the surface of the heatsink itself. You can see where the film has either still adhered to the die (or baked to dust) and the red-lined area where it no longer maintains sufficient contact. So yes, after softening that “film” and carefully peeling it away… thoroughly clean any residue remaining and apply heatsink paste.

* Mind you, there are some that leave the film in place and then just apply paste over it. (cringe)

Fired up some UT on my a1047 PowerMac G5.

Plays like a dream 🙂

The build I installed has all the game sounds but is sans game music which is really nice as it allows me to play my own while still getting all the game sounds.

Do old UT99 clients work with OldUnreal clients? It would be sick to fire this up and join other folks and play.

UT2K4 is great but it doesn't keep 60fps on every map no matter what I do for some reason.

To get updated UT master server lists, follow these instructions.

or your could play on the Tinkerdifferent server games.tinkerdifferent.com:9777 . They're always loaded with bots if no actual people are playing, so one can get their fix, regardless. I like TDs UT and Q3A server.
 
I've been very happy with how this A1047 has turned out (was a 2026 PowerPC Challenge mac) so I am keeping it as a DD in my office. I took the time to fire up a 1T external for Time Machine and installed two favorite productivity apps of mine - Omnigraffle 5 and Toast 9. I also grabbed a fav Apple extended chicklet kb of mine a1243 and connected an aptly named G5 Logitech gaming mouse I've had forever. With the help of alot of legacy mac enthusiasts continuing app support over the years, this 20 year old Powermac really has turned out to be a very useful machine in 2026.

Anyways, there's something about installing from physical media that is "very satisfying" as the kids say nowadays 😉

I've been playing around with OpenGL stuff lately and decided to get ImGui working. This is the latest version 1.90.5 with a couple of big endian patches. Using the OpenGL3 backend but running in OpenGL 2.0 mode, so we can still access shaders if needed. Pretty cool that everything else seems to just work.

Can you try getting ImPlay working?

Here is the branch: https://github.com/macos-powerpc/powerpc-ports/tree/implay (there are a lot of hacks to glfw).
The app works on Catalina, but on 10.6 cannot start mpv GL context.

I can try - I opted to use SDL2 instead (because I also ran into a bunch of issues with glfw). Didn't even know this was a thing.

Is there a quick and easy way for me to just spin up that branch and clone the implay repository directly with your patches applied? I get a little overwhelmed dealing with Portfiles, it would be great if I could just clone a repository with exactly the patches I need, build and go.

If that is easier, I can make a tree, but at least two ports are needed, since upstream GLFW won’t build in current version and won’t work in the last version which can build.

P. S. There is `simple-viewer-gl` port, that one works with my glfw/imgui.

I was playing around with the Plex Server API today and I was able to find a way to get content streamed directly to ffplay. So this can essentially be used to make a fully featured Plex frontend. Does direct play great with practically zero overhead. Nothing fancy here yet, no resolution switching or playback controls, just a cool proof of concept.

Alright well I guess this is a whole thing now. I was able to implement playback controls and a hardware accelerated GL canvas to render to via ffmpeg. Linked it up to Plex server API - all controls work, I can skip between episodes, jump around to different places, it's pretty smooth. I'm now able to access the vast majority of my Plex library with no issues.

Transcoding doesn't work yet but shouldn't be hard to fix - this is all just direct play from your library.

I'll have to prep a release for this and post it soon for anyone interested. Right now the library browsing isn't very good so I'd like to improve that first.

Very cool! I used to really enjoy my Dreamcast when I had one. Incidentally, is it possible to make a Dreamcast disc like this that instead of burning to a physical disc you save to a virtual disc for use in Retroarch? That would be pretty cool also!!
