I decided that after about seven years of NOT using an optical drive, first in my Quad G5 and then with my MacPro, I would ditch the optical drives.

On my MacPro that freed up two SATA connectors. So, back in went my two 6TB drives. Both are failing and DriveDX says 56.x% of health on both. So, I won't be using them for anything critical. But at a minimum, they can function as scratch disks for Photoshop.

And at least I'll be using them more than I was the optical drives!
I am such a creature of habit, I can't break away from optical media - most notably because of my PowerPC boxes. I dont use them at all really for my Intel or AS but my PPC boxes, optical media is still firmly in rotation. I have a CD case full of cd/dvds for PPC (some are universal). Anyways, I loves me some DL action :D I do have all that backed up to my NAS which are all accessible to my PPC boxes but maybe its some nostalgia, some habitual muscle memory, with a twist of bootable flashdrive inconsistency? Who knows, lol :)

Yanking the optical drive and getting some additional usable life out of those 6T drives makes alot of sense for your workflow.

It just hit me out of the blue that I haven't used an optical drive for anything personal in a very long time (10+ years). My entire music library was ripped in the early 00s and I've never lost those MP3s. Everything comes digitally now in a zip or dmg or so. Just install from that or add to the library. It's rare that I buy anything on a CD or DVD anymore. If I'm buying your music, I have to like you a lot to purchase your CD.

So, I've got two optical drives just sitting there doing nothing and they've been doing nothing for four years and one doing nothing for a few years before that. And at some point I decided to stop burning stuff and I wasn't doing that much anyway to begin with. A lot of that can just be redownloaded too.

Then…Apple gives you optical drive sharing. I've got multiple laptops with optical drives and five Mac Minis with optical drives. If I NEED an optical drive, I've still got one.

So, I verified that these were indeed SATA connectors and just swapped in drives. Now my problem is finding a use for all that space. ;)

So, does it start normally with the Linux installed? 🧐 Or still need for several tries to start it?
It's still not normal, but different to before! Less in the way of lights, so more guesswork. Seems to like one long press now. Maybe it will normalise more. Hoping so, and that the RAM slot wakes up...

As an Enya/Maire fan, this brought a smile to my face :D
Like a lot of Americans, I clued in to Enya with the Crystal Light commercials. So around 1992. In many ways, she was my intro to Ambient, although her music is not Ambient. But she opened the door to music I'd never considered. She led to Clannad and Maire, Loreena McKennit, Capercaille, Dead Can Dance, Altan and lots of others. Which then led in to Steve Roach. And once I got to him, that's when I found my music genre.

In this context though, Maire is a physical representation (an avatar) of a D&D/Rolemaster character I had created as an NPC (Non Player Character) that was a powerful mage. My intention, with my panoramic wallpaper (as I mentioned to @TheShortTimer) is connections. Maire is controlling all the input (connections) and directing it through Karan S'Jet (behind her).

No one cares except me, I get that. But that's whats going on here. Skip over if you don't care, I don't mind. It means something to me and that's all that matters (right now).

Anyway, Maire came from here…

I was introduced to Enya by a friend.

I still buy and listen to CDs in this day and age. When I'm at home, I just want this to be part of the experience. I only listen to digitised music while I'm away or when it's audiobooks.

Same here. I'm a huge Ambient fan. I find that it works perfectly in that listening to it doesn't divert my attention while driving or working. I can't have "normal" music with lyrics playing while I have to concentrate on something.

Which then led in to Steve Roach.
Structures from Silence is a masterpiece. Additionally, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Kitaro, Medwyn Goodall, Robert Fripp, Robin Guthrie, Hiroshi Yoshimura are also among my top artists.

Anyway, I'll stop boring you now :D

Ok, so the symptoms have changed? Does it remember clock and network settings between boots? Cannot remember if those use a battery or a capacitor for the backup power to keep settings in memory? If capacitor then maybe it's been totally dead due not being charged for ages and is now slowly waking up from dead? I would keep the PSU connected for a day or something and see if there is any further change.

I've never experienced a need to press the power button for a long time with a Mac - other than when shutting down a non responsive machine.

I had to track Enya's music down. Which in the days prior to the internet was a feat. I do not recall how I found her, possibly a news story on TV or a magazine article, IDK. But once I had a name it opened up an entire section in the music store.

There are some artists I like and some I really like. For the latter, those are who I will purchase a CD from. And I usually just get their download too because I'm too lazy to rip the CD. And…you can get that before you get the CD. I am not an audiophile so the differences between a lot of available stuff is lost on me, but I do try to get the highest quality available. In this context, I am the barbarian American inside the coffee shop whinging about how much a cup of coffee costs and how I can get Folger's for less.

My intro to Steve Roach was The Magnificent Void. At the time I was living at home, had just replaced the carpet in my room with a dark blue carpet and painted the walls a midnight blue. I was looking for music to fit that space, my sanctuary at the time. It all just expanded from there. Finding SOMA FM in 2001 or so opened other doors and Pandora too. I found Stars of the Lid with Pandora.

What's cool is that Steve Roach lives in Tempe and has his studio there. That's, oh, 20 miles from my house. :D

I find that I use ambient when I need to relax/slow down. I try not to listen when working, because often certain work has a priority and ambient is not conducive to working quickly. :)

And you aren't boring me. The 'you' in my previous post was directed at anyone that I might have been boring. :)

My favorite Enya song most of the time (there were a couple which I had on repeat) was this waltz, Carribean Blue. That or maybe Orinoco Flow (Sail Away). She was a dreamy door way into my life long love for and practitioner of Post rock A la Mogwai, Young Mountain, Appleseed Cast, Deftones, Sigur Ros, Jesu and others. Kinda wild to reach back to my early teens where that formative penchant for beautiful dreamscapes and space (musically speaking) grew into what I enjoy today.

Man, Carribean Blue still pulls on those strings so hard. I will always love this song. Composed this response on my EI 2009 mbp running Sealion.

Orinoco Flow is the song used in the Crystal Light commercial that got me to stop and listen. Yeah, it became my favorite, then a lot of others on her albums did too. By the mid-90s I had all three albums, first in cassette then in CD. I bought more as she released more albums.

The commercial though, is what really got Enya noticed by Americans.

OK, turned it off while having evening meal and watching The Hunt For Red October.
The symptoms are less changed than I thought, but they are slightly different. Don't have to wait for the sleep light to flicker before letting go of the power button, but how long to hold it is a bit of a lottery. So far as I am aware, this one is a capacitor, but I can find no definitive spec for that particular thing. If it's a capacitor, then maybe it is slowly coming back to life. The machine has been unused for some time, but definitely worked with 2x1GB, including the first time I managed to boot it. So maybe it just needs more time and a bit more knowledge on my part.

Wowsers, Orinoco Flow, haven't heard that for a decade or so!

Just the opposite here, when it comes to video:
streaming-providers have just a fraction of (and often only mainstream) media available, and the rest has to be bought.
So I started to collect DVDs of my favorite films and convert them to mp4-video-files wherever possible. Prices for DVDs are down to 1-2buck per DVD in average, so that's even cheaper, than to rent or buy it online.

I do the same. I've ditched most streaming services at this point for my own lol.

Just updated SeaLion on my a1078 mbp to version v33.4.

I got my Enya a couple decades ago so this really belongs in the "What did you do with a PowerPC Mac a long time ago" thread.
Some from tape cassette, most from CD - on a Power Mac 8600 or B&W G3.

At the time I was starting to buy albums from artists such as Enya, I only had a tape deck in my car. So I bought cassettes because I wanted to hear the music in the car. Aside from very particular stations and usually only catch if you can, this style of music was not played on air. So, it was cassette for me.

When I finally started converting my library to MP3s in the early 00s because I had access to iTunes, I didn't want to deal with the hassle or expense of getting tapes converted. It was much less of a hassle to me to rebuy albums, but in CD format. Hence, I have albums both in cassette and CD. Fortunately, it wasn't too expensive because the Goodwill became a dumping ground for CD castoffs and you could pick this stuff up for $1 or so.

Once I got the MP3s though, it meant cassettes and CDs were no longer used. Except to rip them, I haven't played any of my CDs in about 20+ years.

The internet was a boon though. In 1997, when moving in to our first home, a lot of our stuff got stolen, including some of my CDs. One particular one was a Halloween find at a Sam Goody and being entirely esoteric became impossible to find without the internet.

But in 2001 I stumbled on it. Some record shop in Amsterdam had it and I was able to get it. Of course now, you can find it on Amazon, eBay, other places. But back then it was difficult.

Steven Schramm, Jonas Kvarnstrom - Music for Your Nightmare. A nice ambient album. ;)

Firefox on Catalina: Catalina is still fully supported, as of the system reqs for FF132. So why does it seem to take so many attempts to get it going? Once going, it's fine, but on everry machine, it takes several attempts and "Firefox quit unexpectedly" messages, before it seems to get a grip and fires up. All 2011 machines.
Anyone have any insights?

My Enya introduction came 40 years ago (my goodness!) through Clannad and their contributions to the soundtrack of the ITV drama Robin of Sherwood:

In the early 2000s, I found a ton of their albums on vinyl (including Legend) at a boot sale and grabbed the whole lot! :D
I came at it the exact opposite. Enya led to Clannad, which made me aware of Maire. It also helped that Dances with Wolves came out because "I Will Find You" became big here.

The big one for me…Harry's Game.

I used to watch this on PBS in the 90s (middle school and highschool). At the time, they were showing a bunch of BBC material from Are you Being Served to Waiting to Die to Red Dwarf and ... Mrs.Bucket LOL I forget the name of that - Oh yeah, Keeping Up Appearances. Anyhow, in all of that awesomeness, Robin of Sherwood was nestled in there late nights through the week.

I had zero idea that Clannad(Enya) was the theme music. Re-listening to this theme song now, the two parts that really stand out to me are the harmonies and the synth. The Synth work reminds me of Kubrick classic A Clockwork Orange. The synth laden tunes on the cinematic sound track are just amazing. I listen to that and imagine Beethoven unleashed on the 20th century would sound similar.

Harry's Game is an interesting one because it appears (quite appropriately) in the film Patriot Games - which is where I know it from but originally Harry's Game was the theme tune for an eponymous UK drama that aired ten years earlier.

Waiting for God. :D

Unless you were thinking of One Foot in the Grave. ;)

Hyacinth Bucket, played marvellously by Patricia Routledge. Just this evening I was watching Hetty Wainthropp Investigates where Routledge also has the lead role.

Until you highlighted it, I didn't even notice the correlations with A Clockwork Orange's score. On a side note, I've seen in person the room and surrounding location where the aversion therapy takes place and I live in the zone of London where much of the film was made. It can be a fun game to spot the (surviving) places during your travels. :)
