I am such a creature of habit, I can't break away from optical media - most notably because of my PowerPC boxes. I dont use them at all really for my Intel or AS but my PPC boxes, optical media is still firmly in rotation. I have a CD case full of cd/dvds for PPC (some are universal). Anyways, I loves me some DL actionI decided that after about seven years of NOT using an optical drive, first in my Quad G5 and then with my MacPro, I would ditch the optical drives.
On my MacPro that freed up two SATA connectors. So, back in went my two 6TB drives. Both are failing and DriveDX says 56.x% of health on both. So, I won't be using them for anything critical. But at a minimum, they can function as scratch disks for Photoshop.
And at least I'll be using them more than I was the optical drives!
It just hit me out of the blue that I haven't used an optical drive for anything personal in a very long time (10+ years). My entire music library was ripped in the early 00s and I've never lost those MP3s. Everything comes digitally now in a zip or dmg or so. Just install from that or add to the library. It's rare that I buy anything on a CD or DVD anymore. If I'm buying your music, I have to like you a lot to purchase your CD.I am such a creature of habit, I can't break away from optical media - most notably because of my PowerPC boxes. Who knows, lol
Yanking the optical drive and getting some additional usable life out of those 6T drives makes alot of sense for your workflow.
It's still not normal, but different to before! Less in the way of lights, so more guesswork. Seems to like one long press now. Maybe it will normalise more. Hoping so, and that the RAM slot wakes up...So, does it start normally with the Linux installed? 🧐 Or still need for several tries to start it?
Like a lot of Americans, I clued in to Enya with the Crystal Light commercials. So around 1992. In many ways, she was my intro to Ambient, although her music is not Ambient. But she opened the door to music I'd never considered. She led to Clannad and Maire, Loreena McKennit, Capercaille, Dead Can Dance, Altan and lots of others. Which then led in to Steve Roach. And once I got to him, that's when I found my music genre. As an Enya/Maire fan, this brought a smile to my face![]()

I still buy and listen to CDs in this day and age. When I'm at home, I just want this to be part of the experience. I only listen to digitised music while I'm away or when it's audiobooks. If I'm buying your music, I have to like you a lot to purchase your CD.
Same here. I'm a huge Ambient fan. I find that it works perfectly in that listening to it doesn't divert my attention while driving or working. I can't have "normal" music with lyrics playing while I have to concentrate on something. In many ways, she was my intro to Ambient, although her music is not Ambient. Structures from Silence is a masterpiece. Additionally, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Kitaro, Medwyn Goodall, Robert Fripp, Robin Guthrie, Hiroshi Yoshimura are also among my top artists.Which then led in to Steve Roach.
Ok, so the symptoms have changed? Does it remember clock and network settings between boots? Cannot remember if those use a battery or a capacitor for the backup power to keep settings in memory? If capacitor then maybe it's been totally dead due not being charged for ages and is now slowly waking up from dead? I would keep the PSU connected for a day or something and see if there is any further change. It's still not normal, but different to before! Less in the way of lights, so more guesswork. I had to track Enya's music down. Which in the days prior to the internet was a feat. I do not recall how I found her, possibly a news story on TV or a magazine article, IDK. But once I had a name it opened up an entire section in the music store.I was introduced to Enya by a friend.

My favorite Enya song most of the time (there were a couple which I had on repeat) was this waltz, Carribean Blue. That or maybe Orinoco Flow (Sail Away). She was a dreamy door way into my life long love for and practitioner of Post rock A la Mogwai, Young Mountain, Appleseed Cast, Deftones, Sigur Ros, Jesu and others. Kinda wild to reach back to my early teens where that formative penchant for beautiful dreamscapes and space (musically speaking) grew into what I enjoy today.Like a lot of Americans, I clued in to Enya with the Crystal Light commercials. In this context though, Maire is a physical representation (an avatar) of a D&D/Rolemaster character I had created as an NPC (Non Player Character) that was a powerful mage. My intention, with my panoramic wallpaper (as I mentioned to @TheShortTimer) is connections. Maire is controlling all the input (connections) and directing it through Karan S'Jet (behind her).
No one cares except me, I get that. But that's whats going on here. Skip over if you don't care, I don't mind. It means something to me and that's all that matters (right now).
Anyway, Maire came from here…

Clipped out and lightly edited using my MacPro and Photoshop 2022.
Orinoco Flow is the song used in the Crystal Light commercial that got me to stop and listen. Yeah, it became my favorite, then a lot of others on her albums did too. By the mid-90s I had all three albums, first in cassette then in CD. Man, Carribean Blue still pulls on those strings so hard. I will always love this song. Composed this response on my EI 2009 mbp running Sealion.
OK, turned it off while having evening meal and watching The Hunt For Red October.Ok, so the symptoms have changed? Does it remember clock and network settings between boots? I've never experienced a need to press the power button for a long time with a Mac - other than when shutting down a non responsive machine.
Wowsers, Orinoco Flow, haven't heard that for a decade or so!Orinoco Flow is the song used in the Crystal Light commercial that got me to stop and listen. The commercial though, is what really got Enya noticed by Americans.
Just the opposite here, when it comes to video:It's rare that I buy anything on a CD or DVD anymore. If I'm buying your music, I have to like you a lot to purchase your CD.
I do the same. I've ditched most streaming services at this point for my own lol.Just the opposite here, when it comes to video:
streaming-providers have just a fraction of (and often only mainstream) media available, and the rest has to be bought.
So I started to collect DVDs of my favorite films and convert them to mp4-video-files wherever possible. Prices for DVDs are down to 1-2buck per DVD in average, so that's even cheaper, than to rent or buy it online.
At the time I was starting to buy albums from artists such as Enya, I only had a tape deck in my car. So I bought cassettes because I wanted to hear the music in the car. Aside from very particular stations and usually only catch if you can, this style of music was not played on air. So, it was cassette for me.I got my Enya a couple decades ago so this really belongs in the "What did you do with a PowerPC Mac a long time ago" thread.
Some from tape cassette, most from CD - on a Power Mac 8600 or B&W G3.

I came at it the exact opposite. Enya led to Clannad, which made me aware of Maire. It also helped that Dances with Wolves came out because "I Will Find You" became big here.My Enya introduction came 40 years ago (my goodness!) through Clannad and their contributions to the soundtrack of the ITV drama Robin of Sherwood:
In the early 2000s, I found a ton of their albums on vinyl (including Legend) at a boot sale and grabbed the whole lot!![]()
I used to watch this on PBS in the 90s (middle school and highschool). At the time, they were showing a bunch of BBC material from Are you Being Served to Waiting to Die to Red Dwarf and ... Mrs.Bucket LOL I forget the name of that - Oh yeah, Keeping Up Appearances. Anyhow, in all of that awesomeness, Robin of Sherwood was nestled in there late nights through the week.My Enya introduction came 40 years ago (my goodness!) through Clannad and their contributions to the soundtrack of the ITV drama Robin of Sherwood:

Still trying to get my hands on it. It's just a few miles away...just awaiting the go signal!Does it work? What’s it comprised of?

The big one for me…Harry's Game.

I had zero idea that Clannad(Enya) was the theme music. Re-listening to this theme song now, the two parts that really stand out to me are the harmonies and the synth. The Synth work reminds me of Kubrick classic A Clockwork Orange. The synth laden tunes on the cinematic sound track are just amazing. I listen to that and imagine Beethoven unleashed on the 20th century would sound similar.
