my Macs are an idle cupboard-full of unused aluminium...
Why? is a 2017 iMac with Sequoia not yet a perfect usable machine? What are you missing?
If you absolutely need a maintained system, Linux Mate (with the Cupertino tweak) does perfectly the job, as long you are not absolutely needing a specific software that has no equivalent...

Not done much lately. To be honest, now that Apple has called time on Intels, I've lost some interest in the machines. I will doubtless push the 2017 4K iMac to Tahoe once OCLP officially supports such a move, but otherwise, my Macs are an idle cupboard-full of unused aluminium...
I did consider getting a Trashcan, but have ditched the idea since.
I don't understand this at all. Who owns and uses Macs just to upgrade operating systems? I am running Monterey in my daily drivers and have no interest in upgrading. In fact I rarely use the OS as such other than the features that have existed for long time in most OS versions. I use software I need, the operating system just makes that possible and acts as a mediary between me and the machine and its peripherals.

Anyways, I have been on a lookout for a cheap Trashcan and finally found one this week (with mouse and kbd, power cord) for less than what a tank of gasoline costs to my car. It is a 6 core machine, so the first order of business was to look at upgrade CPU's. As I do not do video editing or other tasks where 12 core might be most useful I investigated what would be the cpu with best single core performance and found that it is one of the 8 core ones which is "much" faster than the 10 or 12 core offerings in single core stuff and not that much slower in multi core. So, I ordered one of those for 19€ incl. shipping and tax. 👍

I do have a Samsung 2TB NVME and an adapter that I will also transfer from one of my cMPs to the Trashcan.

I just wondered if someone has really got interest in those majestically fails...
Even commercial fails can be good and/interesting machines. Trashcan, G4 Cube, TAM etc.

Trashcan @ 10.000€ - fail
Trashcan @ 100€ - winwin!

The 8-core version I upgrade to is much faster in single-core applications and vastly faster in multi-core applications than the iMac 2011 i7 3.4GHz, which in itself is no slouch, so for most jobs they are perfectly usable today.

And if Apple would have realized to make an external PCIe expansion chassis with 2-4 slots and couple of TB controllers to plug into those TB buses I suspect the TCan would have been little less of a failure. They totally missed the whole point of Mac Pro - expandability. But, they made provisions for it, the 6 TB connectors in 3 buses. Just nothing to plug into them. Also the fact that no GPU upgrades were released was a mistake but that at least is fixable with eGPU.

Ps. and finally I have a use for my wifes ex 27" TB display which I can now fix for myself and use with the TCan. 👍

I wish Monterey worked without annoyances on my Mac mini, MBA M1.
tahoe just remedied Monterey problems and is more GUI friendlier than seq.-vent.
I really like Monterey until the easy upgrade sabotage the system...preference?

I agree and use my MacBook Air 2010 more now since I need to graphic design many things
as CS4 rules with intel 4GB than affinity 8GB unified memory.

personally I don't miss the internets, news, though air drop when works is a blessing!

Sorry, I don't understand what you are talking about. I've had no problems with Monterey over the years in almost dozen Intel machines. What is this stuff about M1? Are you in the right forum?
