My beloved 2013 iMac seemed to have a weird, wonky issue with its fan, where it would spontaneously spike in speed at random intervals. Like, out of nowhere the fans would ramp up to high speed for a split second.

Some Googling suggests that it could be dust or gunk slowing down/clogging up the fans, so I took my house vacuum and vacuumed both the back and bottom vents, hoping to suck out any dust or debris that might be inhibiting the fans. We'll see what happens. I'm not relishing reopening my iMac to replace the main fan.

Opening and cleaning the machines is one of the periodical maintenance items that should be done. In iMac 2012-> case it is a crappy job as Apple sadly started to glue the front glasses on and new adhesives are needed to reattach them. And there is always a risk of doing some damage to the glass or the display panel or even logic board when operating on it. :(

Today I decided to tackle swapping the logic board to my Thunderbolt display. It had a problem where it does not wake up from sleep and needs to be unplugged and replugged to wake it up. I sourced a replacement logic board from a company that sells used Mac parts and the operation seems to be a success! :D

Ps. I think there are 10 cable connectors on that small logic board. Luckily each one is different.
Ps2. I was prepared to swap the TB cable to TB3 type but decided not to at this point as the original cable seems to work. Point of this swap? The display would then have both TB1/2 and TB3 external connectors.

I installed Monterey on it via OCLP, and plan to daily drive it for a bit to see how it fares before possibly upgrading it to Ventura. So far it's been running great, although the battery has 1400+ cycles so I may look into replacing it.
this was very refreshing read this post, 2014 was still a great year for  models!
I do have a weird ?, Monterey is or was excellent except the lid need to be closed to adjust he screen brightness.
of was that snafu only on the M series?

I use my 2010 11" MBA more than ever this year mainly because of the programs and speed!

And now the transition from iMac 2011 to Mac Pro 6,1 is done. Almost all software and other stuff has been installed and everything this far is running properly. 👍

I also now started using the Magic Keyboard 1, until now I have used Apple Wireless Keyboards. I feel like the key action feels better on Magic kbd. Battery endurance remains to be seen. On the wireless kbd it was/is great using Eneloops.

No issues adjusting screen brightness on Monterey with this one!

And yeah, I'm keeping my 2010 model still in semi-frequent use for running legacy programs (since Monterey can't do this, but High Sierra can). It's wonderful how long these things can last!

well we all have performed what I need to do today,
on a MacBook Air 2010 11" go from a fresh Snow Leopard with CS4-dreamweaver dvd install
to the latest OSX for our early intel.
I will try to make this fun and telling my brain, feebly that this IS the better course in the long run!

something happened to the OWC 265 6G blade after a senseless 2020 Mojave UPDATE after everything was excellent.
I do have a working blade of Mojave but on a 128GB drive that cam with the MacBook.
after trying to reinstall a Time Machine back up from the 128 to 265 drive,  would not accept that conversion.

my goal is to get Mojave working with adobe CS4 as well as Fooobar for music, pages, numbers and Vivaldi as my main browser since that likes the internets the best! I have snow leopard already installed as I will rip the DVDs-the install el cap, then H Sierra then patch an install Mojave all before evening today. Then perform the same for the MBP '12 on a separate drive.

boy Time Machine has failed me everyone these past 2 years in M1 and early intel as recovering never seemed to work.
seems to me that is too weird, or just them s lately?

well thanks for reading and have fun!

Crunching away on my disability grant application using a rickety old 2012 13" MacBook Air. It's really held up well, occaisional display flickering and tingling notwithstanding.

It was such an ordeal when I changed the SSD, so much so that I decided to upgrade the RAM too, and vacuum everything out because I did not want to open up the computer again. Sigh.

At the house-sit. Slooooow internet. MBP late 2011 running Catalina will be daily driver. However, today has been focused on bringing into actual use the 12" G4 Powerbook, on which I am typing this. Everything I need for *this* to be the daily driver is actually in place, but the MBP takes precedence!

Until I have no choice, my 2017 iMac will remain untouched. Once in that scenario, I will take endless time and upgrade the bejeezus out of it, in one fell swoop. While the end result will be a nice machine, it's not a day (or two...) I'm looking forward to...

all this upgrading can sure be tedious but worth the efforts!

I believe that was a Monterey issue. I recall the brightness adjustment returning in Ventura. I use old Apple monitors with my M1 Macs and they still work great in Tahoe, but it was annoying in Monterey when the soft controls stopped working.

 sabotaged that OS on the last release, some clueless greedy brown loser thought they can get brownie points by making Monterey Z ineffective so we all upgrade to Ventura, Sonoma....so when idiots complain to  they hav etc elestest software.

now I'm having trouble launching any website on my MBA 2010 early inter because?
im using my MBP 2012/mojave which runs great

Swapped a cpu to my MP 2013. Operation was a success!

I used the Honeywell PTM7950 phase change thermal pad material (Amazon) and IMO it was quite difficult to apply. I kept it in the fridge to make is easier to handle but I had to recool it after applying it to the cpu so I could get the protective film off it. Initial test shows much lower temps (cpu package 10°C cooler at idle) than with the old paste and things should get better after few heat cycles when the stuff phase changes to its final form. Also fan activity is now lower.

I went from stock E5-1650V2 3.5GHz 6-core to E5-2667V2 3.3GHz 8-core. The latter has more L1&L2 caches and a bigger L3 cache + higher turbo speed. In Geekbench it was faster both in single core and multi core performance. So, IMO a good choice for a daily driver. The total cost for the new CPU was 18€ + thermal pad material.

i only used my macbook Pro 2012 Mojave today as somehow i thought that was M1 just now
as the repsonce time was very fast.
now I need to find the other 8GBram chip that is suppoded to be in this macbook, or maybe that got jarred loose?
since the credentiall claims there is 8GB installed.
the 32bit CS4 is amazing which is being sued now.
Orion works great, and the GUI on the MBP is more visble than the M1 tahoe.
the macbook is kinda heavy but still comfortable while the system core 1 is cool 122fº

/win win!

Have you opened it and looked what actually is installed?
I will today, last Saturday I installed a new ssd PNY 265GB that I will run mountain lion from scratch.
just a little computer fatigued this week after installing Mojave on both early intel last weekend.

sure enough, the blade was not fully inserted, I am back to 16GB!
but I lost several screws.....they seem to pop out after many uses.
