my macbook pro mid 2012 intel i7 13" has been shutting down by itself three times this week when picked up
or moved, I replaced the ssd cable two years ago and have an older 512 GB kensington drive which seems fine.
i have a blank 265 brand new PNY drive on the dvd bay that seem more reliable.
since i am not having any luck placing MtLion fresh on that
should i time machine Mt Lion on the Kensinton 525GB that wont boot on the 265
and run mojave on the new 265Gb drive since i use that for web design and intrmets like here.

i think i answered my question now
but was wondering if other
MBP 2012 owners have this shut down problem as the time might be wasted
or there might be a connection problem im over-seeing that causes this shut down.

there is a macbook air 2010 i mainly use for here and music
while my m1 MBA needs a reboot of monterey soon from tahoe so that is shelved
so im not in dire straights macbook wise..... as i know "what global problems i have!'

there is much work involed
but i spent about 3 hours converting a 1993 racing bike to 11 speed shimano 105 parts today!
so time is not an issue.

thanks in advance!

On the 2012 MBP, I bought one from someone who said it was exhibiting the same behavior when they picked it up, it would shut off. They indicated they had taken it into the Apple store and they had examined it and concluded it needed a new motherboard - the usual bs to get then to buy a new Mac.

When I took it home, I was able to make it shut down by lifting it with my hand on the edge and fingers on the bottom case. When I opened it up it was really, really full of dust so they had not opened it in the Apple store. Once I cleaned out all of the dust it did not shut down anymore when being moved. I think the dust was so thick that flexing the bottom case might have moved a RAM stick or made the motherboard move or maybe some conductive material in the dust came into contact with a circuit or other component. There was even dust in the SD card slot and when I removed that, the SD card slot started working again.

It probably isn't dust in your machine. Try picking it up in different ways, shake it or move it suddenly and see if you can get it to shut down. Could just be something loose that needs tightening.

I used to buy, refurbish and sell these unibody Macs because it was fun and easy profit. These were the easiest fixes by cleaning them! I've never come across a bad hard drive cable before. I have a brand new one in a drawer that has been waiting a long time to be installed but likely never will be installed because I don't buy these anymore.

I will have to try that in UT GOTYE!
In other news: 8GB MBA 11" 2013 incoming, and there will be an outgoing of several machines to compensate.
Except, except... in my haste to see 8GB in the listings, I've actually bought a 13"! Wottadummy.
However, it's a lovely machine, as new in original box, brand new Apple Magsafe 2 charger, and a brand new battery as well. And a soft case! So I got a great machine anyhow.
Have set up the machine on Big Sur, then removed the Apple blade and replaced with an an adapter and 500GB NVMe m.2 SSD with MX Linux 25 on it. Very snappy.

Ahhhh the extra screen space is a huge plus,
and this model has a backlight keyboard tho some 11s might too

Indeed, both my 11s (2011 and 2013) have backlit keyboards, a real plus in my opinion.
When I killed the keyboard on my 08 unibody aluminum macbook, I replaced it with a backlit unit and it was awesome :) I may do it with the other 08 and 09 oo macbooks. It was a bit time consuming but nothing terrible and I think the kb iirc was only like $25 bucks, so not too expensive. It was an absolutely worth while upgrade in my book - right up there with max ram and ssds.

Other than my usual 2008 iMac being a YouTube player while I exercise in the basement, I helped my friend get her 2010 MacBook Pro running Catalina a little speedier by installing Firefox and Ublock Origin since she was complaining about it being slow. She told me the next day that it works like a charm now, so mission accomplished! I was honestly surprised at how quick the computer felt with only 4GB of RAM in it, since it's been a few years since I helped set it up for her and I don't have any computers with the same setup (none with Catalina at all, haha) at home.

I had Cat on a 08 MacBook but for the life of me I could not get WiFi to work reliably. It was part of the reason why I started my Linux journey about 3 or so years ago - currently settled in MX which is great! Anyways, I did like Cat quite a bit despite the wonky WiFi - similar to El Cap which I also like except it had better support. Crazy that she gets decent speed with only 4gb ram. I remember crazy long indexing at boot up on my aluminum MB w/ 8gb that would peg both cpu cores at 100% for a few minutes while it did its thing haha :D

Very cool that you were able to help her :apple:

Bummer. The replacement screen I picked up for my kids iMac has a bad backlight.
IMG_2208.jpeg

On the bright side, I picked up a cheap lvds cable and they sent me two lol + the seller refunded me right away which was very nice of them. I assumed they would want me to send it back to them but I offered to take it to recycling and they said that was fine.

Bummer about the screen though. I thought I was done with this project & the kiddos would have been happy to have this biggun back on their desk.

The search for a replacement lcd continues ;)

My 2006 Intel Core Duo 20” iMac had been languishing in the spare room for too long but installing Windows XP via Bootcamp I made it my goto emulated Amiga courtesy of WinUAE.

It’s main task in hand for the past month has been producing my latest music project solely as an Amiga running the ancient tracker software, OctaMED Pro 4.

It’s been challenging at times working within the self imposed limits but I’m happy with the 12 track ‘album’ I’ve made - if/when I get a real Amiga I’ll release it on floppies!

Been using the 2012 MBP a lot lately. Sonoma was working fine, though it did do that thing again where you wake it up from sleep while low on battery and it just freezes at the log in screen. I've since switched to Sequioa and I haven't had that problem. I did have the problem another user had where they couldn't watch their downloaded iTunes videos, but I fixed that by reauthorizing my Mac. Overall, I quite like Sequioa. It runs really well on here.

One downside to Sequioa is no Office 2008, at least not natively. I tried various MS Office alternatives and they all let me down in some way. .doc/.docx files created in LibreOffice would get messed up, Pages didn't support indenting the first line in a paragraph and then TextMaker Free would do this thing where if you copy-pasted text from it to a forum reply box like this one youwouldgetsmushedtogethertextlikethis every other line. So, I really wanted MS Word on here, but I hated the idea of paying so much money for the latest version (and no option to buy a used copy like in the old days). So I turned to virtualization.

I have three different versions of Word on here now: 97 and 2016 for Windows and 2008 for Mac. The Windows ones were easy, I installed Office 97 to my already existing XP VM and installed Office 2016 to a new Windows 10 VM. Creating an OS X VM was more tricky. I had the installers laying around, but I had to use Disk Utility to convert them to DVD/CD masters and then change the file extension to .iso. I went with Mountain Lion because I wanted something older. I tried Virtualbox first and while I got it to run, the performance was janky and shared folders didn't work. I then found out the VMware Fusion is free nowadays, so I installed that and despite no 3D acceleration, performance was much smoother and shared folders actually worked (though a restart was required after first enabling them). I actually used VMware for the Windows 10 VM and I think Win10 performs much better in VMware than in Virtualbox. I was going to experiment with 10.5 or 10.6, but that requires a server version and the workarounds I tried to get around this requirement didn't work.

I'm so happy that I can run Word on here now. I can even copy-paste from Word in the VM to any app on the host OS (and that goes for all 3 of the VMs I made, even the XP one).

I have a m4 mac mini but only working on my intel macs lately.

2 mac pro's 1,1 have ahci m2 ssd's now. Need to test the new 512gb drive from china on drive dx but the other one looked like new health wise. A lot faster than the sata ssd's.

Been trying my uad cards in them but that has been a struggle. i have 2 uad1's and 2 uad2's. Now i have 2 uad's in the optical bay with an pcie to pci extender but need to authorise only 1 card first and then add the second. I think. They are not linked in myuad account so running them together and then authorise give errors. All though they both are seen in system and uad control app. For me kind of wild because they act like magma box and i have never seen people do this before.

Also these 2 mac pro's 1,1 will house 2 sets of 2 mirrored raid hdds as servers. Looking into fibre vs copper.

Mbp 2012 i7 battery started dying on me/shut off/no charge taken so i got a new battery but got the battery up and running again so canceled the order at the door. It's got the og battery with close to 6000 cycles and average of 43% health. But it was acting up later so i did get a new battery anyway which is now out again because the old battery still works and i want to reach the 6000 cycles. I'll put the new one in when i hit 6000 or just switch them every month or so. Idk yet.

Bought a 2015 mbp 15" when battery was dying on the 2012 mbp. I live with that machine so i needed a backup. Got a new 108 % battery and put a pci 3 nvme in it. Typing on it. Lovely screen coming from 2012 mbp (1400p is so sharp compared) and sound is louder and more spacious. Trying to keep it as clean as possible though because i have been flooding disks as a messy datahoarder and that needs to change.

Also have 3 HP G2 thunderdocks 230 watt on the way and 1 thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. Only wanted one but a lot happened and ending up bidding on 2 for cheap and they accepted just before the 24 hours were over. I thought they had no interest and bought one locally. Going to try to put the tb adapter directly to the dock and run them maybe on my mbp 2012 in clamshell mode, 2 2012 mac mini's or the M4. But could be the usb c adapter on tb converter may be a bit to thick/big.

And have a 3 pci magma rack and i think the uad2's end up in there so i can move that rack when i need to those plugs.

Kinda crazy all and all.

Managed to get a copy of Leopard Server and despite this Mac not being able to run Leopard, VMWare can run it no problem. It is noticeably faster than the Mountain Lion VM, so I think I'll stick to Leopard Server. I wasn't sure whether to set it to 32-bit or 64-bit, so I went with 32-bit and things are working great. One thing I noticed about VMWare is that I can copy text from the host and paste it into the VM, something I can't do on Virtualbox.

So, today was interesting…although frustrating would be the word I'd choose prior to posting this.

Anyway, I came down this morning to find one of my Cinema Displays off. There are some times that I have to play musical Cinema Displays by disconnecting the cord from the power brick and then reconnecting it. But this particular display is not usually one that gives me a problem.

I've been called back to work during the week which means getting up at 4:30am and my wife works weekends, which means I get to sleep until 5:30am (I make her coffee and take her to work, then pick her up at midnight). So this morning I am way too tired to troubleshoot this. After a few restarts I notice that something is beeping. Attempting to track it down I discover that apparently the KVM switch is not working.

So, I directly connect those two Cinema Displays to the Mac. The switch is no longer necessary because…I'm back at work. Although, I do have both a replacement switch and replacement power supply if I did need them.

There is no joy with the display. As I said, I was too tired, so I hauled out the work Mac and have been using that all day.

Around an hour ago I tried again and this time made sure both DVI connectors were seated properly. I guess at 5:30am I wasn't doing too well. And that is all it took. Display came right back up. I'm happy.

Now, I do have ANOTHER Cinema Display that is off and that happened a couple days ago. But I suspected then that this particular issue was due to a failed power supply and checking it with another power supply right next to it confirmed that. A new power supply was ordered and will be delivered tomorrow - which will put everything back to normal.

Ugh. Not happy the switch (or it's power supply failed) and the trouble this caused me, but at least things are getting back to normal.

I must be crazy but i'm thinking about getting my 2 2012 Mac mini's 10 GB ethernet and TB1/2/3/4 NVME drives support.

I made an impulse buy and i think i will regret it though. I bought 2 OCW thunderbolt 2 with single slot PCIe enclosures. And i bought 3 HP G2's with 230 watt power supplies but those were local and cheapish around 35 euro ex shipping.

The day after i bought the OCW cases i wanted to cancel them but the seller already shipped them or at least made a shipping label so i couldn't go back. But luckily after i bought it i searched what i bought and found it normally comes with a TB2 cable lock and special cable that fits it so i asked the seller if they were included. They weren't but he said he added 2 TB2 cables. And that may make it not really the worse investment i made cause prices of TB2 cables have gone up. I bought a tb2 cable through Aliexpress for 20 euro some time ago but everywhere they are now 60/80 euro's each so may not be really that bad. Also these TB1/2 enclosures are very rare in my country. But i must be telling myself i haven't done a bad deal but it will be tricky.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are TB1/2 to 10 GB ethernet adapters around and i'm really making this difficult but this allows me to chain them but question is: what is the speed when i copy from 10 Gb network to my tb4 enclosure at the end at HP G2 TB3 enclosure. TB1 is limited by 10 Gb so i think becasue it has to 2 ways through the TB cable that i may be lucky if i get 5 Gb.

But i'm also thinking about booting from USB3 and stripe raid internal ssd's/ or maybe even hdd's. Then i get higher speeds then 5 GB i think. I hope mostly hahaha

Anyway bought 2 of these https://www.ebay.nl/itm/157465229284

So if anybody wants to make the same mistake as me he has 7 more hahahaha

It's around 80 euro ex VAT ex shipping.

im thinking about starting a new thread, not here tho
"What have you done with an early M-chip recently?
since some are having problems with the M1,2 on tahoe.
I guess there with be a

first.

You are referring to this:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/setup-user-guides/hp-thunderbolt-dock/model/20075227

I was not able to connect my HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 (120W) directly to my iMac 2013 with Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. There's no problem connecting the adapter (just remove the bottom cover of the dock to replace the Thunderbolt 3 cable) but the iMac 2013 doesn't see the dock.

I can connect a Sonnet Echo Express III-D (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) to my iMac 2013 with Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Then I can connect the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 to the second Thunderbolt 3 port of the Sonnet Echo Express III-D.
https://www.sonnettech.com/product/echo-express-3d-tb3/overview.html

Maybe the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 doesn't know how to connect as Thunderbolt 1/2 so it needs to connect to an older Thunderbolt 3 device that does know how to connect as Thunderbolt 1/2.
The HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 uses a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 controller which can connect as Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C.
The Sonnet Sonnet Echo Express III-D (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) uses an Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 controller which can connect as Thunderbolt 3 (or Thunderbolt 1/2 with Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter).

New 30" Cinema PSU brick swapped in, display is now back on. And I must say that the display seems to be much brighter than with the old PSU.
The old psu might be repairable. Might be worth cracking it open and taking a look. Could be something obvious and simple.

I have heard that many HP, Dell and Lenovo TB-docks do not work with Macs. No personal experience on those though. Belkin and Elgato docks do work and are dirt cheap too.

The HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 does work with Thunderbolt 3 Macs. It can work with Thunderbolt 1/2 Macs if there's a Thunderbolt 3 device between the Mac and the dock. Maybe @Madr will be able to confirm.
