Also, it seems like I may know why my 2009 15" MBP has a messed up backlight on the keyboard. It seems like someone swapped the keyboard from a newer MBP because it has the Lion style Mission Control and Launchpad keys. Wonder if somehow there is a difference that is making the backlight ineffective.

What’s even more strange is that it’s held in place by a Ziploc bag full of Philips screws. I presume they must be from the old 2.5” caddy. It’s a Micron 1100 SSD, and looking on Google apparently it’s just the 2.5” SSD model removed from its case, why somebody would remove the board I have no idea.

The case serves little practical purpose when installed inside a laptop. Well it provides screw holes but that is it. Mostly it just makes the drive run hotter as there is no cooling available to the circuit board. So, maybe somebody wanted to let the drive be cooled more effectively, just like the later NVMe etc. drives ie. bare naked. I did it once but haven't bothered to do so later on.

Sometimes I really hate eBay sellers! Fortunately, eBay's guarantee covers stuff. I ordered TWO of the wired Mighty Mouse from a vendor that was in the high 99% rating.

They fulfilled my order quickly, but a day later contacted me via message to give me an alternate tracking number. The first tracking was from Nebraska, the second from Los Angeles. Weird!

Both arrived today. The first was a box containing ONE wired Mighty Mouse. The second was a cutup USPS box that was taped together. Absolutely NOTHING inside of it. As it was flat, there was no way it could have contained a second mouse!

There was no direct way to start a return or contact the seller for some reason, so I contacted them back through the message that they'd sent me. THEN, I discovered that the rollerball on the ONE mouse they sent me was defective. It scrolls ONE way, down! Not down or up, but down! Even if you're trying to scroll up.

So, I found a link through Google that went direct to requesting a refund. Got told, 3-5 days and I could contact eBay on the 15th if no resolution. Within an hour I had a refund of the full amount.

Now, I got to try and find another wired Mighty Mouse. At least I got my money back.

Took a microfibre cloth to my Early 2011 17” MBP. I was lucky to get this machine in such great condition when I bought it back in 2019. The seller said he sent it to Apple just as the GPU repair program was ending in 2016 and when it came back he used it for a few months and then just kept it in the box when his new 2015 Retina MBP arrived. It also came with a dual USB 3.0 (5Gbit/s) ExpressCard in the slot. The top case, screen, keyboard/trackpad are all in near new condition and the Apple OEM battery is still (just!) under 200 cycles. Definitely my favourite machine to play around with Snow Leopard and Rosetta. 😀

Well, woke up to a failed network connection in my wife's office. Trying to get three kids ready for gosphel day camp and daycare and troubleshoot a stupid network failure all before cup one of coffee was ... uhhh challenging lol. Ive been giving my office a repaint and new flooring (still working on floor ATM but painting is done) so with that moving around my modem/router which also feeds internet through our power lines via TPLink Powerline up to my wife's office. Anyways, through multiple moves while I was painting and pulling up old carpet/padding etc. in my downstairs office, the cat cable that was feeding Internet up to my wife's office was jiggled/pulled or whatever because it was not working, so I ultimately just swapped out the stupid cable and voila, ethernet working great with solid speeds upstairs and wifi from my wife AirPort Extreme working flawlessly.

Now Id like to say I started at the router for that easy 1 minute fix but my approach was the opposite, mostly because I was still wakeup groggy with the better half hailing loudly from her desk upstairs. Anyways, that obviously got my attention so I started up at my wife's desk and worked backwards ultimately to find that wonky cable like 45 minutes later while encouraging my children to do what they had to do. How does this relate to Early intel? I used my trusty A1278 with cat input & airport utility to quickly test the myriad of cables & devices between my office with the modem downstairs and my wife's powerline/router upstairs connectivity.

It is one I/o that I sorely miss on my M2 mpb16. I thought it would be usbA and yeah that does kinda blow but really it is just having ethernet I/o ready tp rumble for situations like this and to not have it is a giant pain in my rearend. Anyways, yeah my trusty early intel 08 aluminum mb to the rescue.

and now it is back to its primary daily duty function as Pandora streamer via Pithos pushing lovely bossanova tunes to my upstairs stereo.

Earlier this week, my MP dropped two shares from my NAS off the network. Normally, that's down to a particular ethernet cable that plugs into my switch, as the clip is broken off. It jiggles loose sometimes. I know that because it happened earlier.

This week however, it wasn't the cable. The Amazon Firestick stopped streaming to the TV, the Mac couldn't get Google and my other share connections started dropping. Normally, that points to a reboot of the router. However, when the router needs to be rebooted it doesn't take the local network down. Because everything runs into my switch, THEN goes to the router. So, this time around it pointed to the switch itself. I check the switch and there were very few lights blinking.

Unplug the switch for a few seconds, plug it back in and there we go, network connectivity restored. It's rare I have to do that for the switch, but it happens.

I remember there was a website dedicated to the 360 arcade version of it, some of the achievements were so hard to get that only a few people had them and they were all listed on that site. I was among them after many grueling hours... Don't see too many people play/talk about it these days.

Are the fixed GPUs for the 2011s permanently free of the defect like the green dot 8600M or is it just waiting for the same problems? Shame they didn't make a 2012 17", such awesome machines unfortunately let down by the GPU defects.

I love ZUMA. I found a DVD of it many years ago at a Dollar Tree back when everything really was a buck lol and have been putting it on absolutely everything I can ever since. It's such a fun game. My mom actually got really into it after I installed it on her iMac and then mbp and then I stuck it on my kids iMacs and they got really into it. Such a fun game 🙂

This has been the bane of my existence as well LOL. Those dinky clips would always get caught on other cables/wiring and break off. I have been slowly switching out those crappy old cables for new ones with these more robust connector bits that Iare part of the whole thing - hard to explain but they look similar in design to these below. Anyhow, this design where they are connected is such a better design.

Same. For that reason, I tend to go after newer cables that have that plastic bit that fits over the clip. Unfortunately for me, the particular cable in question is older and so has the older clip. It's a longer cable though, appropriated from a former job, and it works. So because it's one of my few cables that has a long run, I just deal with the broken clip issue.

I remember Zuma on XBLA too - though I never grabbed all the achievements that’s for sure, congrats on that!

I believe the replaced GPUs had a revised board layout but the capacitor fail can still occur with prolonged use around the thermal throttle point of the die. For that reason I have gfxCardStatus 2.2.1 forcing the Intel HD 3000 only, which is fine for YouTube playback via VorapisV3 and H264ify & the games I play on it. 👍

When you have one primary Mac that has 10 connected displays, a TV mounted on the wall, several peripherals (adapters, powerbricks for the adapters, etc), modem, routers, switches, femtocell, Amazon Firestick and it's ethernet adapter and power supply, two NAS boxes, a RAID drive, a drive enclosure, a Mac Mini, power cables for phones/devices, power cables for lighting and a clock, USB devices and a MBA that is what you get.



Both pics are from the left side of my MacPro (in the center underneath my desk) and the right side of my Mac Pro. I did not take other pics to show the full extent.

And that is the PRIMARY reason I hate going underneath my desk. It is a warren.

EDIT: On top of that, it's embarrassing. There's really no way to organize any of this. It's really beyond standard cable management practices.

Got my hands on a 2012 13" MBP for a very low price locally after deliberations. Was playing around with it, and it had High Sierra loaded on it. I was trying some games and noticing absolutely abysmal and downright strange performance issues. Was wondering why because I have a 2012 Mac mini with identical specs, and it runs significantly better.

Well, the reason is because all of the games I tried are OpenGL games. I do not run High Sierra on any of my own machines if I can help it, so I was comparing to regular 'low' Sierra performance. I thought about this and decided to load 10.12 Sierra on the laptop and test again. Absolutely no issues, performed exactly as I would expect. Both are fresh installs.

So clearly there is something bad with the OpenGL included in High Sierra, and Googling it seems to reveal that this is a known issue. I have always disliked High Sierra since it was relatively new because I remember it breaking a bunch of my apps all at once, which up to that point had never happened with a singular OS release (minus Rosetta getting nuked). Now I am affirmed even more in that dislike. Wonder if Mojave suffers from the same issue, I would assume so.

Another thing that bugs me probably more than it should in HS is the calculator widget in the sidebar is bugged. It resets to 0 every time the sidebar is closed which makes it much less useful. I believe that bug persisted until the sidebar was removed altogether.

Sticking with my personal definition of 'early Intel' ie pre T2, I'm typing this on the 2015 MBA in Sonoma beta channel. With 8GB, it's usable, but no-one's definition of quick. I'm going to say I won't mess with this for a bit and see how it goes, but something will make me change it, or get bored with it, or whatever!

Chrome stopped syncing on OS Sierra this week since Chrome 103 is now outside of Google's 4 year support policy.

You will no longer be able to sync bookmarks, passwords, etc. with Chrome.
