Nice. My own 2,1 does boot with the new memory but there's definitely a power fault somewhere since the battery doesn't charge, and hooked up to the power, it might turn on for a few seconds while the charging light is amber but shuts off again when it's green. Or I could (should) just replace it with another 2,1 board...
How hard was it to swap them?

Just ordered it so we will see! I will report back here once done.

Good luck! It's not impossible to put a 5,2 A1181 motherboard in a black A1181 case -- the only thing to watch out for is that the screw bosses on the bottom case won't fully match the screw positions on the motherboard (regardless of what A1181 variant you're putting the motherboard into), making fitting the heatsink problematic. One person used a copper shim to ensure proper contact between the heatsink and the CPU, but I find that kind of solution somewhat worrying (especially since they mentioned that in their case only one screw was able to fasten the heatsink to the motherboard).

IIRC, the legendary dosdude1 did this when he did his "World's Fastest A1181" CPU transplant mod, and solved the above problem by taking a Dremel to the plastic standoffs on the bottom case holding the metal screw bosses, cutting them from the bottom case, and simply supergluing them into the correct positions for the 5,2 motherboard's heatsink. I suspect that's what you'll have to do here.

Oh, and since you took out the SuperDrive, you'd might as well put in its place an optical drive bay caddy for a second hard drive or SSD (it's easy and affordable since the 5,2 used SATA for the optical drive, and SATA-SATA optical drive bay caddies are cheap and relatively easy to find). I've said before that this is one of my favorite upgrades for the 5,2.

Also: I had no idea the 5,2 could support 8 GB RAM. I've always seen 6 GB mentioned as the maximum, but after looking into it, I've just read posts from folks on the Apple Support Forums saying that they've gotten 2 x 4 GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMMs working. Wow. I hope you were able to get 2 x 4 GB DDR2-800 SO-DIMMs for a good price! (I always complain about how expensive they are on here...)

Very good to know - I actually forgot to even order a heatsink for it as the board comes without it, so I just grabbed one for another $11 - still not a bad upgrade for $22!

I'll see what I come up with on fitting the board. Fingers crossed. If I pull it off I may even do the A1260 multitouch trackpad mod someone else did - if I can find a black sticker to cover the silver pad.

I was actually looking at the optical drive bay caddy before I planned to upgrade the board, so you're right, now that it's going to have SATA there I might as well! Now the question is...do I throw in the original HDD or spend even more money on this little guy and get another SSD? I'm sure I could find one cheap enough.

As far as the RAM goes, I already had it here, not being used so thankfully I did not have to pay current prices for it lol.

Are you talking about this mod? Wow, I'd never heard of such a feat before. Given how delicate the steps are I'd recommend having a spare topcase handy in case things go south. It seems like you'd have to make sure that you have a backup that comes from at least a 2007 MacBook, as 2006 A1181 topcases apparently won't work with this mod (and in my experience topcases from the MacBook 2,1, 3,1, and 5,2 are interchangeable).

Still, if you do try it, I only ask that you document your steps - I'd love to try this out myself, but I personlly don't find the directions on that original thread very easy to follow or understand. (Probably because I'm spoiled by iFixIt's usually idiot-proof guides.)

If I'm feeling especially hedonistic I may actually just go for broke and try to use this Mac to overcome my phobia of replacing the thermal paste in an early Intel MacBook Pro.

Dooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiitt. 👿

Cleaning out the hard, old paste, putting in new paste, and cleaning out all the dust — coupled with using Macs Fan Control — will make a tremendous difference on these earlier MBPs.

Ah, yes…yet again I receive email for the other me out there. Same first and last name, but he's a beer distributor.

Used webmail to email that person back that they have the wrong guy. I cannot give them (or you) beer!

Despite my name being less common, my surname ends up having me receiving a lot of email from ranchers and sheep farmers, from places like New Zealand, England, and sometimes the eastern U.S. It boggles my mind.

And once, unrelated, I received an email from a U.S. dot-mil address in the aughts from someone sending classified material (!!!) to a recipient who wasn’t me. I had to inform him, promptly, how I deleted the PDFs he’d attached and that he was sending this to a recipient outside of the U.S, who, obviously, didn’t have any business even knowing that content existed. He was profusely apologetic about it and very thankful to know I deleted it, but it left me to wonder how common those errors were before security protocols were tightened (assuming they were tightened).

I get various stuff.

If you know my first name then my username here is self explanatory as to my first and last name. But I'm not the only one out there who has the same first name or the same first LETTER!

The email account I have is at Yahoo and I claimed that email in 1999. So, when people make assumptions, I'm the one who gets the errant email!

There's one guy on the east coast, an elderly gentleman, that I've dealt with on two separate occasions. The first was when he tried to register a Netflix account about 15 years ago. The second was when he signed up for XFinity service. That was about six or seven years ago. They sent all the details for their install appointment to me.

I got his account number, his home address and his home phone number. After trying to contact XFinity support (which is almost impossible) I just called the number and spoke with his wife. After that, a post in the XFinity subreddit finally took care of it.

His name also begins with an 'E'.

There was also one group of people about 10-12 years ago who were planning a vacation in Vegas. I was part of the group email. I kept telling them I was not part of their group but they kept sending the emails anyway.

Then I got the email for the door code for their rental in Vegas. My reply was more in depth and I mentioned that they had now just given me the door code. If I wanted to, I could have driven up to Vegas (I had the rental's address) and walked right in. I let them all know that.

That was the LAST I heard from them. :D

Oh yeah, someone else with my last name and first initial opened an account with Sally Beauty Supply. That was a PITA getting them to stop emailing me!

Neighbors are moving out and they put stuff on the curb (we have a bulk pickup coming).

Took a shot that these worked and apparently they both do!

My son is testing and he wants the smaller one.

My plan is to hook up this Vizio HDTV to the Mini in the garage. That will give it TWO 32" HDTV displays! :D

Now, if the Phoenix summer heat would just cooperate!

My favourite story is about the person who registered the donotreply.com domain and received all kinds of interesting mails.

On more than a few occasions, when I need to register for something for which I don’t ever want to see any email (and which doesn’t require a valid email for setting up the account), I’ve used nope-at-nope-dot-no. :)

When asked for a phone number, I tend to put in 621-311-1566, which you can run through an alphanumeric cipher on your own time. It's not a valid number (I thought it was, but 612 is the Minneapolis area code, not 621) so it can be used guilt free. If they need a valid area code, 520-210-2420 is valid for Tombstone, Arizona, but it seems it might be in use so I'd maybe only use it in a pinch.

My very trusty Mid-2010 iMac, which I still use often...I FINALLY gave in and updated this from Sierra to High Sierra 2 nights ago.

May sound a bit silly, I was always hesitant because Sierra worked great on my end, wasn't 100% sure how the new Apple file system would work on this, plus apps not working maybe(?). Also going by my Aunts 2014 iMac, every time I installed brand new OS, her computer became slower and slower. But I did dive in since Google Chrome browser stopped updating on Sierra OS, Other security updates I missed from Apple in years. Also there are apps I cannot install until I have 10.13 or higher.

Anyway, I DID have a slight scare during the upgrade. It ran the 10.13 installation fine..until the screen went completely white...and stayed white for over 10 minutes. Knew this wasn't normal. I powered it down...turned on, white screen. PRAM reset...no luck. Finally CTRL+V booting up which gave me the option to "Reinstall OS." This did start the High Sierra install once again and this time no issues thank God! No loss of programs, data.

It lagged a tad bit yesterday..even getting out of sleep mode was slower but chalked that up to indexing. This morning, much better. So far so good...my usual apps work. Now I'm even thinking of hitting Mojave soon.

In some cases the registration process goes as far as requesting a name and postcode (zip code) and in those situations I've used the following details:

Charlie W.
London SW1A 1AA

Brits (and those who paste the info into a search engine) will immediately get the joke behind that choice. I drew inspiration from one of my childhood favourites...

I've given out the address and phone number of a Starbucks in Maine before.

I've never been to Maine…

Package upgrade in progress - Devuan at my A1342 :). BTW, thinking about switching to Fedora Core Rawhide (some things in Fedora works right OOB without even touching configs :) ).

May be dumb question - what is max. RAM capacity for this notebook? I've used to idea that it is 8 Gb, but now not sure...

So, I could stack the Vizio (which is actually a 39" HDTV, not 32"!) above the Toshiba HDTV. But then, I'm craning my neck. Annnddd…I'd really like them side by side. This then, is going to require moving furniture. Which, given the piece I will stack them on is actually a much better proposition than what I have going at the moment.

I also need to get back cracking at that garage. I've got an ethernet cable to run out as well, and relocating the garage ethernet switch. This is all to support two Mac Minis, a 17" MBP and a 17" PB. Summer's over it seems (we're under 100º for our highs now)…

Picking up that freebie 20" Aluminum Cinema Display today at 3pm, so it looks like tonight's the night to get at it.

Oh, if anyone cares the new HDTV is 1080p and is the Vizio E390VL. Didn't come with a remote (of course, people lose those) so I snagged one off eBay for $11.

RAID 0’d a couple cheap 120gb NETAC SSDs in my cMP 1,1 & am cloning El Cap to them. Prior to this, it was running a 300gb WD spinner so I think this will be a nice cheap boost in performance. I also decommissioned my a1047 dual 2ghz pmg5 in the garage & this 1,1 cMP is my new garage Mac. The Powermac will still live out there but I have no immediate plans for it ATM.

The new mess…

Taking shape though. I got furniture moved and HDTVs sized in. This is basically how it will look when sitting in the gold chair in the garage. Two of those spaces in the shelf there will hold the two Mac Minis.

Have to rearrange books of course, but now my Rolemaster and AD&D stuff can go right in front of me. There's also some space to the right side of the chair I'm going to use.

Hopefully will be plugging things in tomorrow.

Sweating like a pig, but at least it's not 100º+ out!

Hard drive was finally on it's last legs. So time for a replacement. It was painfully slow anyways with the fusion set up it had. Now I just threw in a spare 500gb SSD that came out of my own Mac Mini.

Recently I also cleaned the thing after not having been cleaned since the previous owner put in a fusion drive which must've been at least 8 years ago. If he even cleaned it then at all.
My mum noticed how it was running and it really was too hot to touch! First time opening one of these types of iMacs and it actually was a lot more straightforward than my 2006 iMac. No credit card needed ;)

Yeah, the thing was packed with dust. Definitely runs a lot cooler now. I'm not even gonna attempt replacing the thermal paste since I don't want to mess anything up right now since it's still in daily use.

EDIT: just found out that Dosdude1's catalina patcher got a couple of major updates. No more ImprovementUI needed. Looks a lot more like it does on a native Mac.
