I currently have a set of the Audio Technica ATH-M50 and I use them at work hooked up to my iPod Classic. The sound is excellent and has got better now that they're "burned in". The only problem I have with them is the pads around the ears are a very snug fit or I've got bigger ears than the average person.

I would also have a look at Sennheiser HD280. I had a set of these before I bought the ATH-M50's and they were pretty damn good as well.

I haven't heard the Aviators, but I wouldn't expect it to be a whole lot better than the Beats by Dre, which I don't recommend.

Save some money, but the Panasonic RP-HTX7s. Style and good sound have a nasty habit of not going well together.

I bought a set of these after seeing them recommended in another thread.

These phones are FANTASTIC!! They sound amazing, fit comfortably, and look good too.

They may be a touch too bass heavy but that's normally not a major problem to have.

The Panasonics are still my go to cans to walk around with. They look decent, isolate well, are extremely comfortable, very cheap and sound good w/o an external amp. More importantly, if they are stolen, damaged - it's a $30 loss.

Heh, as you've found, the trouble with this question is that everybody has a different opinion. I personally like Senheisser's, they've served me well - especially for the price. Grados are very good too, excellent in fact, but I'm not sure you can get closed back Grados. Go find a Hi-Fi store and try out as many different options as you can with some of your favourite music, then choose.

Hi OP!

I notice you're Canadian, like me, you're going to buy yourself a pair of Sennheiser HD-555 from anyone on this roundup of Canadian retailers:

At this moment prices range from 101-199 /CAD. (You can also get them at NCIX)

Next you're going to mod your Sennheiser's into the more expensive pair of HD 595 by following this guide here:

Voila, you have headphones for 100 bucks that typically sell for 300+ on Amazon. (595's and 555's on sale as of this writing)

Edit: Avoid the Beats if you can, I've listened to them and while sound is subjective, I found the Bass to be way over the top. I realize you said you wanted to buy in Oregon, but I figure if you're driving on a Canadian Road to get there, you can pay a little Canadian Tax too.

Hey everyone, sorry for "grave-digging" but I'd like to leave some information for the record :D

I drove down to Oregon, and on the second day of my trip I bought the Skullcandy Aviators from the Apple store. They were pkay, very comfortable, but lacked good lows and highs. So after that we went to Bestbuy, initially to find a radio for my mom, but had no luck, but as she was doing that I was hanging out in the headphone section with my brand new Aviators hanging down on my neck. I tried out all of their headphones, one was the Beats By Dr. Dre Solo HDs. Here, I'll let the short review I wrote a while ago explain what I thought of them:

I recently got these headphones and I actually enjoy the sound quality, bass, highs, and mids, despite what all of the audiophiles say. When I was deciding which headphones I should buy I went on an audiophile forum and asked for their opinions, of course they all said stuff like "They're garbage get sennheiser" but I wanted something stylish and good sounding. I went to a bestbuy and I was very happy to see that they had a test model in. I tried them out and was blown away, best headphones I've ever put on. I purchased them and was very happy with them. My only complaint is if listening for a long amount of time, your ears start to get sore, but thats not a big deal :p I love the detatchable cable, and the control talk buttons. The mic is good quality and the buttons are responsive and feel great.

So anyways, I still have them. I don't regret buying them at all, but I think the Sennheiser HD555's would've been better for me. Those will probably be my next headphones. With the ears getting sore issue I had, my ears have either gotten used to it, or the headphones have somehow stretched out. Don't buy the Aviators. In person they do not look very nice, and the sound isn't good at all. The only pro I can think of is how comfortable they are and the case that comes with them is pretty neat. Dr. Dre Beats are slightly under rated.

I did get a chance to try out the Skullcrushers. They sucked without the amp on, but with it on they sounded pretty good. Better than the Aviators, and with tons of bass (The headphones actually vibrated quite a bit).
