Before you do that, try reinstalling Leopard with the included discs. Try doing an absolutely clean install. Apple told me that the OS is loaded on new computers in an automated way and sometimes this installation is corrupted.

yep m Black book ended up with tiger for PPC on it

3 times

I just got the Alu MB, and I've been having some serious troubles.

1. Incredibly flaky wireless. Safari won't even use WiFi correctly, Firefox works 90% of the time, but sometimes it just kicks my WiFi off. Same with Windows XP in VMWare.

2. Some slanted keys.

3. Above all, I'll be in the middle of doing a project, AND IT WILL DEMAND I TURN IT OFF? Why!? Why would I want to turn it off? It makes me for god's sakes, and I lose whatever I was doing. See the picture attached below, it's happened half a dozen time in five days, and no way to stop it.

4. If I leave it in sleep mode for like five hours (torrenting, won't torrent in sleep mode) and I try to wake it afterwards, it flat out won't. I have to force turn it off, and reboot it. Is this normal?

Ugh. Refurb btw.

REINSTALL! If you reinstall and this happens again... then if the little swirly apple pin-wheel on the load screen just keeps going you have a dead logic board and thats the worst that can happen... happened to me, just watch the **** out.

I shouldn't have to worry, I have AppleCare.

Just had another one:

Ugh. Thing is, I don't have an external HDD, all my data is on this. What should I do?

Oh, and my trackpad feels weird. When you rub your hand up yours sorta quick does it feel like there's a SLIGHT hump near the top? Maybe about 1cm down from top?

Oh, and when I run Java games, it gets REALLY hot. Like high 70s. Normal?

Don't listen to the people saying that your problems are due to you torrenting.
You have faulty hardware, take it to an Apple store or phone tech support.

the bump is on all the new macbooks. That is the bend for the click to register. So you cant click on the top portion of the trackpad to click.

Until the OP runs a hardware test on the computer, this thread is kinda pointless......

That way you can at least pin point the problem to hardware, or software.

OP's been given solid advice/recommendations, hasn't followed or even acknowledged any of it yet keeps on asking "what should I do?", and starts listing petty things as potential problems (slight hump on trackpad!?!? 70 degrees!?!? Give me a break...)

He's either bored, attention-seeking, or emo.

All three! (Not really.)

So just double, triple checking. I can run a hardware test without losing all my data, right? I don't have an external HDD.

Yes, you can. It's on a CD and checks your hardware without affecting anything on your computer. When it runs, it will seem like it's stalled. Just be patient and wait, wait, wait until it finishes.

If it gives you the all-clear, then your problem is probably from some application you installed. Try to only install software that is well reviewed on sites like versiontracker.com

Results of test below. (No problems found.)

Anybody? >_<

i'm not getting into whether it is good or bad, morally/legally.

i'm just saying that it puts wear and tear on the computer/network because it's done in little small pieces over and over again. (think of it as wear and tear on a carpet, running back and forth. it is NOT the same as downloading large files from the internet because there is no "uploading" and the pieces are in "sequential order"

http://www.tipoftheday.info/tips/6-steps-to-avoid-bit-torrent-damage/

I stopped reading that article when i got to this section:
"BT download lunatics often drove all night the day the station and it is in fact the download. This situation has led to hard disk temperature is too high, accelerated aging and its fatigue. Now that the 7200 high-speed hard disk to the heat is great."

How am i going to take computer advice from someone who lacks the ability to form a sentence properly?

I had similar problems with my Macbook (white, 2.16) where it would randomly crash and the report referred to kernel panics. At first I thought it had to be something with Wifi/firefox as it seemed to happen most frequently while browsing.

I took my battery and RAM (3rd party upgraded to 2 gb) and gave it a good all around cleaning with some air duster. I noticed when I was removing the RAM the metal bracket holding them in place seemed a little loose (the screws came out way easier than they probably should have), and I had some difficulties having the RAM set right in the first place.

Anyway I gave everything a good tightening and haven't had any problems with crashes/reboots since. I have a feeling the RAM was moving around slightly, causing kernel panics. Hope this helps.:D

Back up your stuff as soon as possible, your computer sounds like a time bomb. Even if it's not ideal, a cheap way to do it is DVDs or plugging two macs together with an Ethernet (rj45) cable, you could also connect your mac and a pc on the same network and send the files. Do that before anything.

As others mentioned, there's something wrong with the install or with the hardware. Since you don't have an apple store close to you, you might want to check a few things that might fix it and won't make you go computer-less for a few days while it's off for repair. Check the serviceable hardware, pop the cover under the laptop and take out the battery, hdd and ram, inspect, clean it then put it back in. If that doesn't work, resinstall mac os (it doesn't take that long, actually).

If all else fails, give apple a call, you shouldn't have kernel panics and you shouldn't have to trouble shoot a new computer either.

i suggest buying applecare coming back the next day and fixing it,
returning it
or craiglist it.

never knew refurb could be this unstable..

have you checked system update to see if there are any OS updates? are you on the latest version of leopard (or tiger?)
10.5.6

Here's the thing, I have about 200GB of movies on it that I do NOT want to rerip from DVDs. As well as much music.

Negative? No external hard drives, and the only other computer in this house is a 6 year old PC with a 40GB HDD. >_<

I'll force my parents to buy an extneral for me, I guess.

Ticking time bomb indeed.

I was encoding a few DVDs with Visual Hub, fans gpig pretty loud (expected for encoding) and then it turned off completely. Came back on a couple minutes later and then shut off once more several minutes after that.

Now it just won't turn back on anymore. :(

Mine is perfectly flat. I have no bump. I don't think what you posted is correct.

lets not make this another "dont torrent, if you cant buy it you cant deserve it, pirating is not theft" thread.
down the line, torrents dont make kernel panics.
usually conflicts with hardware do. (and microsoft word does...)

i (and a thousand of others) had kernel panics before 10.5.3 because FWAudio drivers were too crappy to handle any firewire audio interface.

if you dont have anything connected something in your MB is not okay with the OS.
could either be 1.) bad os installation (can be fixed)
2.) bad hardware

if 1st doesnt work, go to apple store, or demand a replacement, sorry.

Sounds like it was a hardware problem other than the disk drive. It should boot even if the disk drive is bad.

right because I can definitely afford 700 bucks (little less with student discount), for photoshop...on a high schooler's budget.

Here's a good suggestion then- purchase Photoshop Elements 6 for $74.99 here.
