(Refurb) iPad Air 1 user here! In fact, it is my first tablet, had to get it as part of my part-time work (then).

Seeing that it is now struggling with some of the games I am playing, I wished I could have gotten the Air 2 (also refurb) at that point of time

I'm pretty much the same way. I feel like I've wasted money if I have redundant devices, so it's one laptop, one tablet, and one smartphone. If I get new model of any of those I get rid of the old one.

I've got an Air 2 and to be honest I see no reason to upgrade it. I think Apple over did itself with the Air 2. It was the first tablet to get two gigs of ram and a Tri-Core SOC. The tablet is still pretty fast. It's also got that high quality anti-reflective coating "purple" like they have on high end designer sunglasses. In single core the A9 is obviously faster, but in multi-core the A9 vs the triple core A8x is pretty close. However, I find myself using the tablet less as the phone screens get bigger. Once Apple reduces the bezels on their phablets and gets to about 6 inches, the less relevant tablets and mini tablets become. I still know a guy who takes his ipad 2 to work and uses it with no problems. Apple built them a little too well, where it's only needed to be replaced every 5-6 years, but since mobile chips have gotten so powerful that trend looks to be gone in the near future. Just like in the 90's when a new computer would double in performance every couple of years. Not the case anymore. Moore's law will be no more.

Yes, I literally just realized the Android users would pick that up. I was merely speaking Apple Eco system only. Sorry about that. I've owned a few Android tablets and they where throw away plastic pieces of crap. After about a year and a half they simply suffer some type of electronics, or touch failure inside. I will say Android in it's purist form "Vanilla Android" in the Nexus and Pixel systems are much more enjoyable and fluid experience. That's why I like Apple. None of that garbage custom UI crap, pre-installed bloatware and such a fragmented mess...

I think you would get a better result between the two iPad pros if you separated them out in the pool

I have a 16GB Air 2 which I got when they first came out and it serves two purposes for me. 75% of the time it sits docked to my iHome clock radio on my nightstand and it streams Apple Music or Pandora while I'm working or reading in my bedroom. The other 25% of the time I remove it and put it in a case and take it with me when I fly to use as an in-flight media tablet to watch the airplane's streaming video.

I've got a 9.7pro an a 12.9 pro, both maxed out, both LTE, keyboards and pencils, cases, the whole shebang. Use them both daily, almost/completely depleting both batteries! Serious magnificent devices that I really like a lot. Needed to change my workflow, some things are still odd (after 18 months or so? But then again, I've used mac's for 15 years and laptops/desktops for 20-25 years) but as I read enormous amounts it still saves me lots of time and many trees in paper, as the ipads are much more efficient at reading and annotating pdf's.

In the interest of full; disclosure 😀 , I have an iPad original as well and the first iPad mini, I've got a macmini 2014 and a MacBook Pro 2015 as well, but the iPad Pro's are my daily drivers. Oh and I use a the old iPads are for the kids, my MacMini is used for odd stuff and with Jump desktop.
The MacBook Pro is sadly never used anymore.
I should probably sell it or something, but I can't bring myself to selling it. Stupid, but true.

Yeah - The best iPads so far have been the iPad 2 and iPad Air 2 in terms of longevity and everything. Hopefully the Pro 2 is the same.

I've actually purchased a second hand Air 2 as an interim device for home. I'll continue to use my iPad 2 at work and sometimes at home, but the Air 2 will serve till I get a Pro 2 and I'll then flip it 😀

I miss my iPad 2 on iOS 8 - was a good mix medium between iOS 7 and 9 - performance closer to iOS 7 but features closer to iOS 9. Shame that the supposed performance enhancement iOS 9 was such a slow down :/

My iPad2 is close to unusable now. I can't believe they in any way decided to release this. It was the main reason for me upgrading to an iPad Air 2. Clicking *anything* takes it 2-3 second to respond!

Have you tried disabling features + a clean install? My iPad 2 is slow, but not unusable.

I do prefer having the ability to update to iOS 9, but would prefer they gave the option of a downgrade to iOS 8.

iPad mini 2 32GB - Use for websurfing, email, shopping and once in a while gaming (mainly pinball games)
My mini still runs pretty smooth (I do full "reinstall" from time to time).

Since the iPad 2017 came out and the Best Buy trade in deal, I've been tempted. I've been swapping back and forth between my iPad Mini 2 and my wife's iPad 3, and still find I much prefer the size of the mini.

Honestly, after getting my iPhone 6 Plus I rarely use my iPad mini. But if Apple had released a iPad Mini 2017 with same CPU as the full size iPad 2017, I would have done the trade in deal to get it.

It's only 16GB though and always full. Had I been more thoughtful and bought a 64GB, I probably wouldn't even consider upgrading, but now I have my sights set on the iPad Pro 2, 256GB (that should last me practically forever). I think the only thing that would make me rethink the upgrade is if it doesn't have 4GB RAM, which I feel it will have to have to guarantee its longevity. Otherwise it would probably be dropped from iOS at the same time as the now 2.5 year old Air 2 (with 2GB).

I loved my iPad Mini 2 32GB for the size, but I too didn't use my Mini as much once I got my iPhone 7+ in November 2016. So I passed my Mini on to my son and got an iPad Pro 9.7 32GB in February 2017.

Yah judging by the rumor of the next iPhones all getting 3gb of ram I think we can safely say the next iPad Pro will have 4Gb across the board as well
 
I've had an Air 2 that's been my daily driver for the past couple years.

Just recently bought a used Mini 128 cellular from a buddy to mess around with (and I'm slowly falling in love with it). The Mini is an excellent little tablet for while I'm out and about, runs great, and in no way is showing its' age.
