I made this one, it may not be feasible because the screen is so small but I gave it a shot.

Flicking in any direction on the screen would be a cool way to go to the next shuffled track. :)

As a developer, I can assure you that this won't be an iPod Touch or iPhone Nano. No current applications would be able to run on them which is why the iPhone and iPod Touch is so popular. Probably will be in no future product, because no one could work a 3x3 cm touchscreen. Very unApple like.

UPDATE: After looking at Andrew K's post, I think that it very well could be a part of the new shuffle. Looks great!

Me gusto. :D

Looks good! I bet the Touch Screen iPod Shuffle wont play movies, but just like on that photo displaying album artwork looks good. However, I bet it will not show pause, back, forward, nor track timeline and will use gestures to control music instead.

Just like the death grip design flaw of the iPhone 4, the current iPod Shuffle is flawed at birth, it really needs an on-unit control for music playback because that stock Apple earphones easily wears out.

I LOVE IT! ...but there is no need for the play/pause buttons because those controls are on the headphones. I believe it will list the album cover, and possibly the name of the song. Perhaps when you tap it, it changes from shuffle to whatever the name is when it just skips to the next song. And then swipe it when you want to change the song.

Call me crabby... but...

...what is up with MacRumors lately?

First, the speculation about whether or not the new iPod Touch will incorporate any cameras. The line in the story about how neither of the cameras would fit into the current iPod Touch design was so irritating to me. Why in the world would you make the assumption that a NEW iPod touch wont also have an all-new design?? The obvious, as stated by many in the forum comments is that it will of course have some new design, most likely of the iPhone 4 variety, but not necessarily.

Then this story about whatever this screen is. Again a line about how it wouldn't fit with the current Nano designs. Duh! Again, what a weird thing to say... a NEW Nano would likely have a NEW design. Duh!

I don't mean to sound like such a crab, but jeez... who is writing this stuff? Apple is a company that's proven time and time again that it has no problem redesigning, updating, etc. its product lines, and in fact that constant refresh and upgrade of those lines is exactly what keeps nearly all of us coming back for more. It seems whoever wrote these pieces assumes they're gonna try to cram new technologies into the current body and design. The rest of us all EXPECT that most of the iPods will have some kind of design tweaks, as they have in the past.

While that's a nice bit of photoshoppery, the only problem is that the iPod shuffle has three basic characteristics: it's small, it's inexpensive, and it can be used without looking at it. That these three points converge in the shuffle is not an accident. A design like this looks great, but would not be very functional in reality. Why not just use physical buttons?

in answer to your points

its small: I would still class this as a small device, with the added capability of a screen so maybe it wouldn't be a new shuffle but an ipod touch nano

inexpensive: yet to see but could be close as the technology is now much older and the screen size tiny, in reality

use without looking at: this could easily be done on this device. Remote on headphone and same voice technology used. From a user POV no difference

I beg to differ and think something like this would be very practical

Thanks for the compliments guys :D yeah it probably wouldn't need the volume on the screen, it'd be cool to browse the album and playlists ( the current shuffle has playlists ). I could only see it having a clock and a calculator, but that's it ( No Apps ). Maybe Apple will make the back clip so you can add a wrist band to it!

Accordning to a mail conversation "Gasman95" on IDG.se had with Steve Jobs it is not a display.

I asked him to contact mac rumor or similar, so someone can verify the emails

Absolutely will not be a shuffle or a wrist watch, the key thing is that the battery on these devices is too small to play music for a decent amount of time and power the screen.

It's possible that a successor / replacement for the Apple TV class of product could be game focused and incorporate a charging cradle for a wireless control device for gaming / menu navigation and that the screen could be placed in the middle of the control device and used for customised controls or player specific information in multi player games, I'd also expect it to have a digital compass and gyro. "iMote" possibly?

Have you seen the current iPod nano? I think there would be more than enough room for a battery. He'll this prob wouldn't do video playback like the nano does so should have excellent battery life.

A second touch screen?

Guys I think I just figured out what Apple is planning to do with this tiny touch screen:
Another screen for iPhone/iPod Touch to show u some status or it could be used in apps/games,,, of course this is just imagination but they can put it in iPod Touch to boost its sales after iPhone4/iPad sales nobody is looking at it again?

No, I am not crazy :D

That makes sense to me. If they are planning to give Facetime to the Ipod touch, then giving it a rear camera and a screen to use it would be cool and make sense.

The Ipod Shuffle with a screen makes sense too though...
