iPod classic with the same classic body and click wheel but a touch screen as well. That's my bet.

why a clickwheel and a touch screen?
but not a bad idea. just thought the screen on the classic was already larger than 3x3cm?

For those not metric friendly, that's about 1.2 inches square.

Obviously it wouldn't handle any existing full interface, but it should be fine for four buttons or so at a time or things like scrolling track lists. And if it's for shuffle, who's to say it would only have the touchscreen and no buttons (or not a touchscreen at all, just a display)?

Seems too small for anything useful. Apple has a rule that a UI element has to be at least 0.5cm x 0.5cm in size with 0.3cm gaps between tappable elements. So, this would mean a 3cm x 3cm screen would allow for a maximum of 3 buttons per row of navigation.

A 3cm x 3cm touchscreen is too small for normal iOS. It'd have to be an iPod OS or something completely different.

It's the remote control input for Apple's new TV.

This sounds quite good! Apples go at a universal remote ... that only works with mac kit.

Use in a phone is ridiculous, too small. But its certainly the right size for some play pause controls and a volume slider.

My universal remote has the same size screen. It could be a new remote, since this seems to be a common size for a remote. :)

SJ " So small that you can't even hold it - the reception issue is solved!"

That's it! :D

I'm thinking it's for an iPod Shuffle, or maybe a status indicator for a wireless mouse or keyboard.

Or maybe, it's for checking battery status, new e-mails, etc on MacBooks without opening them. THAT would be cool.

Who needs a watch?

Many people I know don't have a wrist watch but use their cell phone as a (pocket) watch instead.

Just a random observation, but 4 months ago Apple hired Richard DeVaul, an "expert" in wearable computing.

https://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/15/apple-hires-expert-in-wearable-computing/

Computerworld reports that Apple recently hired Richard DeVaul, an expert in wearable computers, to the position of "Senior Prototype Engineer". The move appears to signify efforts by Apple to remain at the forefront of computer technology as it looks forward to future devices and usage habits.
DeVaul has a background in wearable technologies as you can see from his personal homepage, as well as a PhD. in Media Arts & Sciences from MIT. At MIT, he worked on new human-computer interaction techniques for wearable, mobile, and portable applications.

DeVaul also founded AWare Technologies, a company originally focused on wearable motion monitoring system for athletes and the military that has since shifted to a consumer-based focus that offers several products including StepTrakLite for the iPhone.

According to today's report, DeVaul will be working on highly secret projects directly under Apple design guru Jony Ive.
DeVaul will be working under Jonny Ive in a secret lab focused on wearable computing technology where only seven people besides Ive and CEO Steve Jobs know what he is doing.

DeVaul gained some fame in 2003 for his development of Memory Glasses, a wearable computer system offering a tiny display capable of providing users with non-intrusive and even subliminal information to assist them with memory-related tasks.

Windows Vista already introduced support for secondary displays. It did not take off.

However, on a MacBook (Pro), it would be awesome. If built into every MacBook sold, it actually makes sense to start writing software that uses it.

hmm that's tiny. I wonder if it's an iTouch nano? The iWatch idea would be ridiculous lol. I like the idea of a touch tv remote or universal remote but I think the market is already filled with these.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

The iWatch is finnaly here!

Hm... so I need an iWatch because my iPod, iPhone, iPad, iEverything doesn't give me the time?

If they ad this to a shuffle, they're just cuttin' their nuts. They should be lowering the shuffles price down and down and not adding to it to keep it expensive. Such a small touch screen seems too limited a device for anything other than perhaps buttons on commercial device which change images and use touch to allow a person to work data for plane tickets, or whatever.

3x3 cm is ridiculously small, what could possibly function on 3x3 cm with a touch screen? What about people with large fingers...

it'll just be a remote light switch. you'll be able to customize the wallpaper and their will be one touch button to switch off and on the lights...

3cm x 3cm is NOT too small at all. In fact, it is almost the EXACT same size as the touch screen on my Harmony Remote control. If you measure your iPhone screen, you realize that it's only 5cm wide. So with 3cm, you can fit 2 1/2 App icons....MORE than enough room for a remote or small iPod screen.

Here's a visual, 3cm gets you a LOT of usable space....

Apple TV remote

I will go for Apple TV remote/ iOS game controller.

Imagine a slim handheld device with a multitouch sensitive surface like the Magic Mouse. This will work like a trackpad when you're web surfing on your big 42" TV screen, scroll, swipe, click, drag etc.

On top of the remote is this little touch screen. This is where contextual buttons appear, as suggested by Arran. Space enough for six icons or buttons. Default content for the screen is six hi-res icons representing your six favorite TV channels. Directly clickable of course.

The small screen will also let you scroll through your iTunes content and playlists without having to turn on your TV, allowing you to use your new Apple TV box as a juke box (when hooked up to an amp or active speakers).

Of course the new Apple TV remote will also have accelerometer and six axis gyro just like the iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4, so it can be used as a game controller for playing iOS games on your big screen TV.

Cool, huh?

Is it not obvious?

It is the new shuffle.

This is too small and not practical for use as a remote (a remote has to be relatively bigger than that and easy to find around the couch).
