The price, in dollars , is almost 800 dollars here(pay n go, the plans are are not worth it) and the lack of bluetooth functions.

I've already got an 8700 series BlackBerry paid for by my employer and it doesn't make sense to carry two phones. Although, my BlackBerry currently uses AT&T as the carrier so I'm hoping I can convince my employer to "upgrade me" to the 3G iPhone. :D

Yes I have my reasons. Well, just one actually. Waiting for current contract to end in November.

Price of IPhone

I am not getting an IPhone because of the $30/month data plan requirement. At $20 I was ready to capitulate but the increase to $30 was too much. I am retired. Having a combined cell phone and Ipod would have been great. For mobile data service when I travel I use my IBook. Can't justify spending $720 for something for which I will have little use. In addition I would have to switch to AT&T which is a negative. I even wrote the President of AT&T but that did not help. I though they would be glad to get a customer to switch and one who would not place load on their data network.

Our Verizon contract is up, and so I almost persuaded my wife to get one so we would buy two on a family plan. She isn't fond of AT&T but was ok to at least try and if no good within 30 days, return but...

A showstopper for her (and for me as we need to be on the same plan  ) was she found out you can't voice-dial using bluetooth like we can our Razrs. She rear-ended someone a few weeks ago (cost her $1500) because she was trying to manually dial with her phone so she blew out the iphone due to a safety issue.

Sooo, either hopefully 2.1 or 2.2 :(

i have a first gen, but whats keeping my from upgrading is that gps and 3g are not worth the extra money per month when my first gen works fine.

Because I want to just unlock an iPhone so I can use my current AT&T off contract sim which has the $29.99 plan on it without any data. I don't need dedicated data as wi-fi is fine and I would just add the $5 text plan. Stupid me for waiting on the new model which requires a contract in store as I should have just bought the old one.

Tried MobileMe=total disaster

But, my company IT dept. has iPhone support (with Exchange via ActiveSync) on the roadmap. That will likely be my entry point. F**K MobileMe. Once I get my business stuff on my phone, syncing with my home Mac should be a slam-dunk (with some known limitations I can live with).

Had MobileMe worked as advertised with Windows devices, I would already have an iPhone.

So people who got an iPhone have to use this thread to gloat...

Asshats.

hahahhaha! asshats. that's funny.

but i'm not going to get an iphone because as of right now, my dad pays for my phone bill, and we're all on a family plan, and our plan runs out in october. so i might get one, but i HIGHLY doubt it. my dad thinks a phone is to just to make calls on. . "none of that fancy tex-mexing." awe, i love my daddy, but technology is NOT his friend.

I'd really love to get one, and I really want one. However, my current phone is through T-Mobile and I don't have the money to cancel my contract. It'd be a little too expensive to start one up with AT&T (or so I think after looking at a few things), and I'm going to really miss picture messaging. Decisions, decisions!

I currently have 2 months and 6 days left of my 2 year contract with at&t with my Motorola Sliver (no data plan). at&t and the apple store (stating at&t's policies & procedures) said that I would have to pay full price ($499 8g, $599 16g) if I bought the iPhone now and transferred my number to the new phone. Otherwise, I have to wait.

I looked at my current SIM card and 3G is written on it. I don't know how to switch the SIM card and if that will work, especially since I don't have a data plan. And I don't know that if I do, and at&t sees a new data plan for iPhone prior to my contract being up, I'll get charged on my at&t bill.

Very unhappy. You think that at&t would waive it if I'm purchasing more services from them. I don't get it.

Given that it's sold out most places this probably won't work...but I'd call a CSR and have a friendly convo with them. Are you new to AT&T with the SLVR? What is your monthly bill? Do you have a family plan, etc? I only point these out because you can usually press for some benefits if you leverage the money you have made/will make for AT&T. Now, they are more inflexible with the iPhone because they could be (it sold out without bending the rules for everyone) but once sales start to steady if you're still not out of contract try gently persuading someone to help you.

FWIW, I've been on AT&T since they were Cellular One-->Cingular--> AT&T and I don't ever recall waiting 2 years for an upgrade, they are pretty good about upgrading you at 12-18 months if you have data, high text plan, high voice plan, or if your bill is routinely over a certain threshold (once read it was 90. Not positive. But you get the idea.)

I don't feel like paying an extra $15 for AT&T that already sucks in my area.

Sorry AT&T, but you are not going to suck any more money out of me. As long as I own an iPhone, I'm proud. :p

The fact I can only upgrade (as an existing iPhone user) in an O2 shop, and they sell out of 16GB iPhones within an hour of getting stock in.

I'm guessing I need to be patient and wait a couple of weeks for the fuss to die down a bit.
