I have all my fans except the psu fans and cd fan hooked up to a fan splitter. Takes the load off the logicboard. And with those there are no wire mods, just noctua fan resistors on some of them. The silenx fan is hooked up to the cpu header and gets a full 12v and is very quiet and pushes a crapton of air
I revisited this project recently, even though I was skeptical about the effectiveness of my G3's retrofit. I ended up finding the SilenX fan on Amazon of all places, and the price was fair.
Two things I noticed, though: it's shockingly loud at 12v (and even 7v), and it pushes a surprising amount of air towards its edges instead of straight. Another thing I noticed is that the OEM fan has very good static pressure, while this one has what is probably average static pressure. This part especially concerns me, because I am worried about this less efficient airflow. The fan is against a heat sink after all. With the G3, its 90-degree air duct seemed to warrant a fan with high static pressure. Although the G4 does not have as restrictive of an air channel, it still seems that the air still needs to squeeze through a lot before it's expelled. Or maybe I'm wrong and Apple was just going overboard with cooling fan specs during the PowerPC days.
