I didn't mean for it to sound like I would pick up the iPad by the cover only. I meant that it seems like it is possible that when one picks up the iPad the fingers on the bottom of the iPad could slip off and then the only you have a grip on is the cover. Lets face it the brushed aluminum backing of the iPad does not have the most grip in the world. It is hard to explain without actually showing what I mean. Maybe I'll post a video up on YouTube.

EDIT: Never mind not going to make a video because I don't have a smart cover to demonstrate with. Oh well.

Unless you ONLY grab the smartcover, it isn't going to slip off. if you have firmly grabbed the iPad (i.e. pinched in hand with fingers on the back, thumb on the smartcover on the front) it isn't going to slip off. It stays in place pretty well.

If you're fingers slip off the back, then yeah you're going to drop it--but that's true of any case as you can't hold anything by only touching the top unless you're Spider-man! :D

But yeah, if you want drop protection, then you need something thicker that covers the whole thing.

I bought it just because i need some protection for it and there are none at present in the market.

I love it because it doesn't feel like you're losing the apple aesthetic of the device.

Even with the original iPad and case - it didn't feel apple to me. So I never used that case and used the iPad bare.

I got one just to use until i get a third party case. I plan on getting one of these pixelskins

You beat me to it.:p

Also, Tuff-Luv has some pretty cool-looking ones. Not really my style, but they are sharp. I might get one of those for my mother.

I agree w/ you OP. I think its a combination of it being one of the few "cases" around, the magnet novelty, the Apple packaging, and people drunk with euphoria when they finally get to buy their iPad. I could make a crude bar analogy but you get the point. The smart cover is very similar to how iPhone 4 bumpers were all the rage ($30 for a rubber band!) until people figured out they didn't really protect the phone. My guess is they won't be nearly as popular a couple months from now when lots of 3rd party cases are available at the same or less $.

It's not that at all for me. I think the case is over priced, and actively dislike Apple in general.

I just prefer to use the device naked, but knew I needed something to protect the screen that was also easy to remove. Being able to use it as a typing stand is convenient as well.

I'm not anal about scratches and scuffs on the aluminum. I'm not one of the sheep who'll upgrade yearly with apples minor updates, with adding web cam the iPad 2 has all I need in a tablet so I'll use it for a few years until the battery stops holding a charger or there's something I want more out (like a full OS tablet with similar battery life and size etc.). So resale value is moot for me as it will just get passed on to a friend or family member or recycled if its dead.

Point being, while over priced like all Apple accessories, it does fit the needs I had for a cover so I'm pretty happy with using it and a neoprene sleeve for when chucking it in my briefcase or luggage.

I like the design of the smart cover,

BUT like a lot of others I still think apple should have put a back on the case...

I will be waiting for a 3rd party accessory to come out with the stand and the back protected...

i'm getting one to protect the screen when im out of the house.

I have a cat you see, and they do whatever they want, and sit wherever they want, especially if its on a nice shiny (warm) reflective screen.

I dread to think how easy a cat would scratch the screen.

Thats my reason, but if I didn't have a cat, I think my ipad would be fully naked 24/7
Does your cat have diamond tipped claws. :p A cat can't scratch glass people. He might be able to scratch the aluminum.
