15 months done 3 times to Iraq, another 12 month to Iraq, and just last year a 9 month to Afghanistan. Plus a 12 month to Korea, 2 years in Germany, and currently on a 3 year tour to Germany. So I'd say most of my adult life has been overseas. I'll make my way back to the U.S. Once I retire in a couple years.

Are you married? Thanks for your service...

Been married for my last 2 deployments. Had my first child 3 weeks after going to Afghanistan this last time. When I came home he was 8 months old. Once my 20 years is up its time for the civilian sector for me. Currently working on my masters degree so hopefully I'll be prepared.

This guy's posts are getting weird.

When someone asked one of my brothers what was the longest he’d ever been away from home for, he grinned and said “Just long enough to make sure my dogs still know the difference between a security drill and the real thing.”

I had to laugh when he said it because we had just been talking about how to dissuade one of his useless rascals from bringing terrorized mice into the mudroom of his place. Live mice, mind you. Not harmed, either, just this side of cardiac arrest from being grabbed up fairly gently and carried inside a cavernous mouth full of teeth for 50, 100 yards, maybe a quarter mile, who knows.

Anyway when someone asks me how long I’ve ever been away from home, I regard the question as proof of the good sense in having some kind of security system, even if it’s a dog that won’t kill a mouse.

4 weeks. Sleep away camp. Hated every second of it. I'm a homebody for sure.

Oh, man. Camp is still my favorite memory. Went for 2-6 weeks at a time from ages 9-16. I'd still go, but I'm 40. I'm also quite the homebody now.

As for the topic, I didn't technically have a home from the time I left college at 23 until I was almost 30. I had a 100% travel job, and only came back to stay with nun parents for a few weeks, maybe a couple of months, at a time.

Since I've owned a house with my wife, the longest I've been gone in one stretch is 3 months.

Where are you at over here?

I'm curious: were those dogs retrievers? A friend of mine had two retriever-mixes and they'd do the same thing, bringing in live field mice from the back pasture. She also had a terrier, and it didn't. It was, however, happy to dispatch what the retrievers brought in alive.

An Australian shepherd. There were a lot of other types of critters of which it was not nearly so solicitous, but mice for some reason it liked to catch and release... in the damn mudroom!
