I'd say, I need to find a phone that suits my needs and choose a different device. Possibly a 6.1 Pro or a S22 Ultra and see how I like android. As far as the mini, Apple is the only company that offers phones in the size you've described so if they decide they don't want to offer it in their lineup, that's their choice not mine. As far as getting rid of the Max, Apple is offering a non Pro Max in the 14 lineup so I'd say except for the SE, Apple is putting their efforts into phone's at least 6.1 or larger.. I have no problem with the mini, it's just not for me...
I think what the user was getting at was what if (hypothetically) Apple (and other companies) only started making even bigger phones, say 9” and up, nothing smaller. If that would frustrate you, then that would be the equivalent to what small iPhone users feel now. But as you touched on, what can we do but find the phone that best suits our needs, even if it’s far off.

Hahah I meant the two device thing was a possibility after the Mini is discontinued (if it is). I will almost for sure go with either the Mini or new SE after the SE1, as two devices is definitely extreme. I wouldn’t consider it unless the smallest iPhone in the future is closer to 6”. I really really hate using a phablet when I’m out and about (I tried for a few months and just got more and more frustrated). But even 6” is probably less headache than two devices, especially with no software integration between them. I dunno, it's just a no win situation, seems like.
As far as Face ID vs Touch ID, I’m sure Face ID is very convenient, but I’m very uncomfortable with/wary of my device having that level of detailed knowledge of my face and being able to read my expressions and my eyes at all times. It’s too personal for me, so I always put a sliding camera cover on my devices, which wouldn’t allow Face ID to work anyway. So that’s a big reason why I might choose SE over Mini. Just a personal thing.

Edit-
Actually, can’t an Apple Watch unlock an iPhone now? I have a watch so maybe I could get a Mini and just use that instead of Face ID.
Edit again-
Never mind, I believe the watch only unlocks if I use Face ID and I’m wearing a mask or sunglasses. Also it would only work for unlocking the phone, not Apple Pay or Keychain etc.

I think your SE will last you at least 2 more years even if it becomes an unsupported device in September this year. I use my SE as a kind of all in one device, like I did with my Mini, and use a lot of digital media apps which may not be supported by late ‘23. I also do a lot of web-browsing, instant-messaging and all that kind of thing. I think IM & basic web-browsing are going to be fine for years to come so you will still be able to use your SE as a phone at very least.

The 13 Mini will be good for 8-9 years meaning it’ll be fine until close to the end of the decade. I have no real concerns about Apple abandoning small phones as, like me, you clearly don’t require the newest chipsets or technology if you’re still satisfied with an OG SE.

I reckon Face ID will soon become a part of life, not just in relation to unlocking your phone, so it’s something you’d better get used to sooner rather than later, lol.

Yep I’m hoping for/expecting maybe two more years out of my SE1. I don’t require the latest tech, or rather, it’s not higher priority than a phone that’s comfortable to use for me. But I do depend on a lot of apps like banking, so I’m thinking their compatibility will determine how long I’m able to use the SE1.
That’d be great if the 13 Mini is usable for that long. By that time who knows what the new options will be.

I too would guess Face ID will become incorporated into more applications—I’m thinking VR meetings/interactions with avatars with detailed facial expressions. But I doubt even any of its future benefits will outweigh my distaste for it, but who knows. Tech just keeps getting more and more integrated with society. Next might be AR glasses, then maybe brain chip implants (Musk’s Neuralink), then who knows… As tech gets more and more integrated, it also gets more and more invasive it feels like.

The perfect phone (for me) would be SE1 size and weight with full screen (like Mini 13), touch ID on the power button (like iPad mini 6) without Face ID, SE3 camera, 6GB memory and 128GB storage for the base model.

And since its not gonna happen, and Face ID is no go, next phone will be SE3, even that Mini 13 is smaller…

and that's fine.

For me, the regular iPhone and the Max are just too big and I'd prefer to be able to get another mini when I'm ready to replace mine. Maybe the tech and market will check and there will be one. if not, I'll be less happy with whatever phone I get.

Tell you the truth, whenever I'm at the Apple store I always pickup the mini and play with it.. Honestly I wouldn't mind having a Pro Max and a mini.. My X has been an amazing phone for almost 5 years without any issues (except for a battery replacement last fall). 5.8 is my sweet spot so not sure how long the X will be supported but I might ride it out until it either dies or Apple drops something I can't resist..

The 12 Mini I have is so much more smoother and snappier than the SE ‘16 and it’s very noticeable even in basic day to day operations. I don’t mind the slight slowdowns and frame drops when browsing or swiping between apps so it doesn’t bother me… I have a high tolerance for older and less powerful tech. The A14/15 are monster chips that are many times more powerful than the A9 so I can see the 12/13 Mini surviving a long long time.

The banking apps, which I use on the SE too, are likely to become unsupported first due to the lack of security updates when the system becomes unsupported. I don’t know if Apple will continue to update iOS 15 once iOS 16 is out, I believe they’ve done it with older versions in the past.

I agree with your thoughts on Face ID being a slippery slope. I strongly oppose transhumanist ideals along with augmentation on healthy people, which I believe will become normalised in the near future. Brain chips are as far away as you can get from sanity in my book.

Until Apple themselves confirm there is no more Mini, I would relax. Weren’t they not meant to make the 13 Mini? Then it arrived. People are putting too much into these rumours. Wait until Apple actually confirm the next move.

I am not interested in current flip phones, but maybe Apples approach could temp me. If not I'll just have to move to a bigger phone next upgrade, might even just full send to a Max model. I found the 6.1" 12 Pro noticeable in pocket, so maybe going to a Max will just take a small adjustment (have owned an 8 Plus and Pixel 2 XL, while cumbersome I got by).

I love the size of the mini and how it disappears when carrying it, but it doesn't offer me the same easy one handed usability as the SE1, I still have to shuffle it around to reach stuff. With that in mind, I don't mind going back to a bigger phone. I was quite happy with the 12 Pro, but going back to a smaller phone with the same 12 Pro Max main camera was too tempting and won out.

I really want the Pro Max model but I just can’t seem to get over the 6.7” size and the flat edges clearly affects the ergonomics of the iPhone.

I came from the 12 Mini, to the 13 Pro, and now 13 Pro Max. You get used to the size and weight in two weeks.

You never get used to the battery lasting for two days, it still feels like magic.

Yeah I agree. On top of the sizing issue, the screen was just badly tinted. Currently I’m using my 13 and the screen is amazing. I’ll see if I can make the switch to the 14 Pro Max later this year.

Well, this is just me, but I am normally averse to buying super-expensive flagship bling phones. I just bought a new iPhone SE 3 128 GB, from Apple. Looking forward to receiving it on May 2. ?
