Ohio, looking toward Germany
have been mucking about trying to get things running smoothly.

one thing i've discovered is that disk utility will not repair permissions. it seems to endlessly spin it's wheels thinking about maybe doing it.

so i went to the terminal and ran top to see if i could find anything. what i found is a process "installdb" that seems to be taking up 75% of my cpu, and i don't know what it is, what it does, or anything.

i tried to kill it and terminal said operation not permitted.

does anyone know what it is, and why disk utility seems to be misbsehaving?

thanks

For some reason, Disk Utility doesn't show permission repair progress, but it will eventually finish. It just takes a while.

It's launched by Disk Utility. Looks like it doesn't communicate its progress with Disk Utility properly. It will complete, eventually. I ran "Verify Permissions", then stopped it, but installdb continued to run. It finally completed around 8 minutes later. I would say it's "normal" for 10.5.0, but definitely something that needs to be addressed.
