That's not true. First, there is no "limit". Also, as already stated, Apple does not sell returned items as new.

Obviously not true. I was clearly being a d*ck. But seriously, who would think that there's an answer to the number of cycles for a brand new purchase to be considered a return item... Those people deserve to be misinformed, as they're clearly not putting in the cognitive effort to begin with.

I mean c'mon the thing is wrapped in plastic...

You know it violates forum rules to intentionally mislead people.

It violates forum rules to be obviously sarcastic?

Ok. Well, better set aside the better part of a year to ban everyone who's been sarcastic... Considering I read a majority of these threads everyday, I can safely say that's everyone, well besides you... You generally are completely accurate and objective, but I've seen even you get a bit snippy from time to time.

my new BTO MPB 2.6/16/256 showed 3 cycles in the about this mac preferences. WHAT on earth could they have done to it? it DID come with 10.8 though, so maybe they built, then had to install ML

It's also against the rules to fail to use common sense. So technically you could say I was enforcing that to a degree.

There's nothing wrong with being sarcastic, if people can tell that's the case. Your posts don't indicate that, and those who are new to the forum or new to Mac ownership are likely to believe misinformation if it's not clear that it's sarcasm. You might consider using the sarcasm font. (<- sarcasm)

It's hard not to break forum rules here. This is the most draconian forum I have ever visited.

:) I'll definitely consider it;)

Either 8 or 10, can't remember which. Not really worried it been a returned item since it came straight from factory in China.

So you guys who barely have any cycles... do you just leave it plugged into the adapter? Cos when mine is charged I always unplug it and then it lasts about 7 hours so I can imagine I will get about a cycle every 1-2 days. What is the recommendation?

Run on battery whenever you need to and plug it in whenever you can. You can plug or unplug at any time, regardless of the charged percentage. Just make sure you don't run on AC power all the time, as your battery needs to be used regularly to stay healthy. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions:

I currently use my retina mainly as desktop replacement, have a 13" Sony Vaio Z for working on the go. So far I got 26 cycles after a month of use, and I'm planning to do a full charge/discharge cycle every month.

I wish we have the ability to set maximum charge % for the battery like most Windows laptop. Ideally I'd like set the retina to charge up to 60% since it is plugged in to the main most the time, the battery will degrade slower than if it is fully charged all the time.

There is no need to do a full charge/discharge. You're already averaging close to a cycle a day. There is no need to put unnecessary cycles on your battery.

Your Mac will manage the battery just fine. It doesn't hurt to run it fully charged, as long as you're exercising the battery regularly, which you are.

Thanks for the tip, I was use it regularly on the go for couple of weeks, but since my Vaio got back from repair, the retina have been sitting on the desk most of the time. That is why I'd like to have the laptop not be charged fully all the time, must be a habit from Windows side.

Old habits are sometimes hard to break. The Battery FAQ in post #43 will bring you up to speed on Mac notebook batteries.
