I've got fond memories of DOS. It was a simpler time when all you really needed was just one program running at a time and a command line. The Amiga OS was very cool too.

Of modern operating systems, Windows 7 is at the moment my favorite, closely followed by OSX Leopard. Hopefully eventually we'll have something that combines the best parts of both.

Yes, at the moment Mac OS X has a higher score than all the others put together, hardly surprising on a Mac forum. The only significant omission is Solaris. Pretty much everything else has been covered.

Although i do have a little soft spot for Panther because it was my first Mac OS ever and never let me down.

Hmm pretty cool. Not surprised that Mac OS did best, though I'm surprised that Windows did so well, considering how anti Windows this forum seems to be (nothing against Windows here though).

I must admit, Amiga OS was a pretty good OS, so not surprised that it got a few votes.

Pretty interesting to see though, even if Ubuntu is awesome (debating whether I should try different window managers with it though, just to experiment).

Technically, I believe you're wrong. I have a box with System 7 on it, and there's a nice little logo right on the front that says "Mac OS 7", and if I recall correctly (I may not) that same logo is present when starting my old PowerMac 6100/66. I believe it was 7.0, but I'll have to dig it out of the closet :)
Download MacTracker. Launch it. Read it. Report back.

As with a lot of people, my favorite is the OS I practically grew up on; in this case, Windows 95. I like the look of the icons and the taskbar, plus how fast it was compared to Windows 98 on my dad's computer. I still fire up my laptop with 95 on it just for nostalgia. :)

Probably OS X Leopard and Windows 7.
I really dislike Linux and alot of the older operating systems.

I liked OS 9, then switched to Jaguar but found myself booting up in OS 9 again. When Tiger came out, I really liked it and a lot of new users came on board around this time. Let's see what Snow Leopard brings.

This was the problem with BeOS. It was great, but nobody knew what it was. I bet if anyone else on this thread had tried it, there'd be a lot more votes! ;)
I presume that you are talking about BeOS in the context of Apple's choice of OpenSTEP over Be as the basis of MacOS X. Well, the real problem with BeOS is that it was not nearly as mature as OpenSTEP.

Be had some interesting features and capabilities. It was also speedy. Burdened with the extra baggage that would have brought it up to OpenSTEP's level of maturity, it is doubtful that Be would have remained as quick.

I'll agree. Win 95 did strangely made life easier during those times..

I do think that at the time, it was pretty revolutionary. By that point, the Mac OS had seen very little change in the 10 years of its existence, and was really in need of a complete overhaul. (Which happened 5 or 6 years later.) Windows was just more user friendly in comparison.

(No reason for the image, just had the urge to post it.)

I'll have to say OS X 10.3 "Panther". Yes I use, and love, Leopard, and wouldn't go back to Panther, but Panther is the version that finally "clicked" with me. I loved the concept of OS X since 10.1, but still went back to Windows because there are too many "sacrifices" to be made to use OS X.

Panther ended all that.

7.5.1 was the first to be called "Mac OS" on the boot screen.

Stephan 2.1

My parents developed this OS back in the late 80s, and I have been using it ever since.
It is succeptible to virus', however I have never encountered one that has not been quickly removed.
When the OS was first programmed, it was in a non-coherant language but eventually was upgraded to German. Years later, English, French and limited Japanese options were implemented.

Sluggish at times, especially after to much input, it will enter sleepmode for 2-3 hours.
With average running speeds of 5-7km/h, fetching mail and retrieving new resources is a breeze.
Overheating is prevented with a water cooling system. About 3 Liters of Water is consumed a day, even with minimal use.

Upgrading the system, although possible and expensive, will not be necessary for at least another 30-40 years, when some parts will age and wilt away.

Uptime (;)) can last anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours, depending on stimulation. *giggle*

Could it not print, or is that just a myth?

For me I'd have to say Mac OS 8.6 (I had to use it until 9.2.2)
and, IRIX for SGI, nothing special, just a boring flavor of UNIX, but for SGI. It was the OS on all my SEMs at my old job. I miss the SEMs.

tiger for me. installed it on my ibook g3 after jaguar (which was awful)
and it changed my view on everything :)
(i love leopard though.)
