Of course I give my iPods names, how else would i know which machine to load them from. I have no clue what their serial numbers are even though that info is on the same screen as the names in the Settings / About page.

I keep a cribsheet with their names (yah, and the serial#s) and the name of the machine I usually load each one from. After awhile I don't need the cribsheet to know that I load BigDog from the 15" powerbook. I'd still be trying to memorize the serial numbers, never mind which laptop each iPod gets loaded from.

Just the other day I read that because of how the human brain originally was "wired" to handle numeric concepts, and because of differences in how various languages express numbers, native English-speakers can generally only remember a string of 7 digits easily, whereas native Japanese-speakers can just as easily remember up to 11 digits.

fwiw that's why my cribsheet is organized by the NAME of my pods, not their 11-character letter/number designations.

Anyway I cannot tell you my iPods' names (i made BigDog up although I have considered that for a Classic if I cave in and get one), because that is classified information ;)

Siemens Switch - Assistant to the Supreme Commander (office reference)

"The Thing" - you gotta admit, it has possibilities.:p

It really is called that, but only because I tend to think very slowly when I talk (It's a constant problem when talking to new people, when I get my words mixed up or leave words out of sentences) and so "computer" doesn't come to mind, so it's become an automatic reflex to say "the thing" when referring to it.

Strictly speaking, you know that Arrakeen is the name of the capital city of the planet of Arrakis, right? ;) (Arrakeen is also the adjectival form of Arrakis: "We will fight until no Harkonnen breathes Arrakeen air.")

I haven´t named any of my apple products, but my HD´s name is "SCRAT", after this little fella:

IstidScrat_a.jpg

Mac Pro - Serenity
Apple TV - Shepherd Book
iPod Nano - STOP BEING FAT --- (I used it for the Nike+... :p)
iPod - Kaylee Frye

My Shuffle and Powerbook had names but I use them so little I think they got reformatted and default named.

My iPod Touch is Fredrick, Fred for short :)

My friend and I have this thing where when we name our iPods, we name the other person's, and the color of it has to be involved in some way.

She has a silver 2G iPod nano, so I named her's "Silver Baby".
I have a black 5.5G iPod, so she named mine "Black Velvet".

I haven't decided what to call the PowerBook yet. But, now I think of it, it needs to be something black-related, seeing as its black.

Hmm....

Black Beauty?

Nah, too unoriginal....

I'll get back to ya.

Yeah. My PB is Dr. No. My iPods are Honey Rider and Tatiana Romanova (but all of my portable consumer electronics share names from that batch, so my next purchase is scheduled for Tracy di Vicenzo).

macbook's name is chipper (named after chipper jones), and huddy is currently the name of my 1st gen black nano (because tim hudson is skinny).

Yes, I know... I originally it was only planets, but I didn't want to use the name Arrakis or Dune (don't know why, just didn't feel right...), so I used its capital city instead. :D

Ah, The Stig. You better be getting a white one.

As for me, I haven't ever considered naming my iBook or Video iPod..

I have...

My iBook is called Chico.
My iPod video which I got rid of the other day is called Mr. Pod.
My 5GB iPod is Beastly Brick.
My touch is The iPod.
My MacBook I call "the mub".

I've just started naming my Apple stuff and I'm not finished yet, but here's what I have:

MacBook Pro: The Pro from Dover (M*A*S*H)
HD: Skynet (Terminator)
Time Capsule: HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey)
nano: Butch Coolidge (Pulp Fiction)
iPhone: Zoidberg (Futurama)
