I've always had a special place in my ... heart for bow ties.

I've always used the half windsor. I've never heard of the shell knot before. I'll have to try that the next ime I wear a tie. That won't be until Christmas, tho...

The knot I tie most closely resembles the half-Windsor, but it's actually my own concoction that can untie like a Four-In-Hand. It's a bit more symmetrical and a bit less 'full' than it's Windsor counterparts. Very similar, but has it's subtle differences.

I've been using it for the last six or seven years, when I started getting serious about my clothing.

95% of the time I'm wearing a tie, it's an informal occasion and I'm just wearing a tie because I like them. It's the four-in-hand for me.

I do like a half-windsor when the situation calls for it.

Half Windsor for me. My dad spent a solid hour trying to teach me how to tie a half windsor, and it just wouldn't click. I got frustrated and googled it, and 5 minutes later, I had it down. He couldn't believe it... Lol.. :D

when I started getting serious about my clothing

When you get serious about clothing its time to question the reasons for living:rolleyes:

Oh I use the four in hand with top button undone and knot dragged 3 inches below the adams apple...see I'm am serious about clothing:rolleyes:

???

Am I not allowed to pay attention to how I dress? Sorry but I don't follow the reasoning behind that post...

I do a full windsor. I don't know the diff between a full and double. I still can't get the dimple right :(

I can never get very good dimples either... I did try Windsor today. It was the first I learned, but I ended up with Pratt and Four in Hand because they were easier. But Windsor is good because I have a short upper body and it uses up more tie.

I have to practice it a few more times before I'll remember how to do it again without a picture.

When is a Windsor Knot Appropriate?

I finally learned how to tie a windsor, and I'd like to show it off, but I don't know how or when to use it. I know it's more formal, but is it only appropriate with spread collars?

When? Whenever you feel like it, but you're right, the shirt must be suitable for it, else it would look odd. If you like the knot, you can always go to a decent clothiers and have them help you find shirts that are appropriate for it.

Always.

A more suitable question would be "When is a Windsor Knot not appropriate?"

If you can tie a tie properly, then that's how you tie a tie. I could never wear fat clumsy tie. Either wear a clip on or dignify your tie with a proper knot .

Anytime you're wearing a tie, a Windsor should be fine. How often do you wear a tie and it's non-formal.

I always preferred the half Windsor since I could never get the full to be smaller than my fist.

The four-in should be outlawed.

Here's a quick guideline. But I don't know that there are any real rules other than, does it look good with this shirt?

A full Windsor knot is the only proper way to tie a tie. Anything else looks unbalanced or sloppy.

And if that's what you're going for?

To me, it's possible to wear a suit and tie and not look like a suit. Who wants to be the perfectly pressed and polish business man? Where's the individuality? I love the four-in-hand and hate the full Windsor.

Suits look great, but I hate the current style. Everything is far too uniform. The only thing that looks good uniform is a tux or full evening wear with tails. I don't know why, but somehow you can retain individuality with those, so long as you don't wear one of those "tuxedos" that are now in style that are no more than a crappy suit with a satin-faced lapel. Oh man, and don't get me started on colored vests/cummerbunds/ties... The only colors that belong on a tux (except for perhaps a flower in the lapel) are black and white.

Oh man, I got off topic. Anyway, I think the full Windsor makes you look like a banker, which is not what I'd want to look like.

By the way, I'd wear a suit everyday if I could. Unfortunately the dress code here in San Diego for work is almost always "business casual" (i.e. shirt that has some sort of collar and any pants but jeans, except on Fridays when jeans are okay). Nonetheless, I wear a tie every once in a while. In fact I'm wearing one right now.

I absolutely detest ties and all they represent. Complete waste of time and cloth IMO.

So I vote never :)

Well, you're no fun! :p

Actually, I hate seeing ties on anyone under, oh, 30 as a general age, where everything is ill-fitted and generally too large, and it looks like their mommy dressed them.

I wear ties extremely seldom, which is why I like to wear them when the occasion dictates. A little bit of dressing-up is good for the soul now & again.
