I still don't understand how AT&T is figuring this out...

I had the Original iPhone and then upgraded last july on launch day to the 3G.

AT&T says I'm eligible for the upgrade on 12/12/2009.

I don't understand why its not 7/12/09 like most people who bought the 3G last year...
If you bought a 3G on launch day you have to figure 18 months from then because that's when you extended the contract. The 7/12 folks never bought the subsudized 3Gs.

im no expert, but i think the date depends on how much you have spent on monthly charges. i have your same situation, but am on a 99/mo voice plan and a 64.95/mo business domestic+intl data plan. my upgrade date is 7/12/2009

this makes sense if you think about it. apple and att subsidized the 3g phone for the purposes of making their investment back over the course of your monthly payments. people who were on a basic plan would take longer to "pay off" the subsidized investment than people who were paying much more every month, who would pay it off sooner.

anyway, that's my guess.

That makes sense. I bet there is a magic dollar amount you have had to reach to be eligible. The people who are out farther than a year since launch date must have a date set based on when they will pass that figure.

I purchased mine on launch day with the 700 minute plan and it says 3/12/10. My wife has no features on her regular phone.

This makes the most sense to me and seems to be reflected in the dates and plans people have been posting.

Stood in line on Launch Day 2007 for my first iPhone. Stood in line again just over a year later for the iPhone 3G. I could update next week but pay a hefty price, even though it is still discounted from the full price. My upgrade eligibility date for the complete subsidy is December 12, 2009. I can wait....

9/30/09; 1 year from the date of purchase of my 3G.
My bill is over $100 (which I understand plays a part as well).

July 14, 2008 - Original Purchase date
August 02, 2008 - 1st Exchange
August 12, 2008 - 2nd Exchange

January 12, 2010 - Upgrade date

The first AT&T rep hung up on me and the second AT&T rep told me that the first 30 days of service does not count toward the upgrade date. Apparently the 30 day return period we aren't officially on contract.

I hope that Verizon gets the iphone by or around January 2010!!

12/12/2009.

Originally I signed up for AT&T after the iPhone announcement in January of 07 and chose to a Samsung phone to bide my time. I bought the first iPhone 7/20/2007 and picked up the 3G on launch day 7/11/2008. I'm really thinking about buying the 3GS at the contract free price so that I can hop to another carrier when Apple loses AT&T.

if you went from iphone to 3g, it's an 18 month wait until upgrade eligibility. if you just started on the 3g, it's 1 year. if you started and only used the 2g, it's whenever. i think.

I think the people who aren't on the primary line are 18 months. Primary phone on family plan is 12 months.

Neither of those theories hold true for me.

I started with the 3G, and I have one line on my account. My upgrade is still in December (18 months from my purchase).

I bought mine on launch day last year. I'm guessing they use some kind of equation to determine how much of your subsidy you have 'paid down'. We have 2 iphones on our plan with minutes of 1500 a month and unlimited data. My bill is between $150-$200 a month so my hunch is that is why I can upgrade 1 year later.

9/30/09

But, I'm too impatient and getting it next week, lol.

I got my 3G iPhone on 8/29/08.

I got my iPhone 3G on opening day, and it says i wont be eligible until March 12th 2010.

question? I am being quoted $699 for 32gb. Would it be cheaper to start other line and close it after 30 days?

This is it!

AM I ELIGIBLE FOR AN AT&T CELL PHONE UPGRADE?
Not all Cingular/AT&T customers may qualify for a cell phone upgrade. At this time, AT&T Mobility allows these customers to upgrade with no upgrade fee when they commit to a new 2-year contract:
AT&T customers who have had 24 months of cell phone service since activation of their cell phone or since their last phone upgrade.
Certain AT&T customers may be eligible for a cell phone upgrade even if they have been in their current plan for less than two years (24 months), if they commit to a new 2-year contract and meet these eligibility requirements:
Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more,
or
Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing $99 a month or more, and who has been in contract (and not upgraded) in the last 12 months.
A customer with a calling plan and data services of less than $69 who is 21 to 23 months into contract may upgrade for a fee and a commitment of an additional two-year service contract extension. No upgrade fee is assessed for any customers who are on a month-to-month agreement.
Note that AT&T upgrade eligibility may be further limited based on customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade eligibility is solely determined by AT&T Mobility at its discretion.

You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/21/2009

That's probably about the time I bought my 3G last year... I'm currently on a family plan, 1 iphone and 1 other pantech phone...
