I am not even going to start on my rant about the horrible condition of US broadband...

According to our government it is just as fantastic as everything else! LOL. I have a 15mb/s symmetrical package for a price I consider fantastic for the states. There is a really interesting wired article somewhere about the cost per mb/s in a ton of different countries. The US did not shine...
Not surprised due to the size of the states compared to the population.

I decided not to go with FTTH because of the cost. Depending on the area it is from $50 to $70 for a 100Mbps connection.

For me my 50Mbps (actual around 11-12 Mbps) at $30 including modem is enough for me. Plus the funds that I save over a year can be put towards some other Mac product! :)

15 Sym is around $80US/mo and I feel like I am getting a deal. Cable was horrible for me b/c the bandwidth is not dedicated, and things were dragging where I live.

I am becoming increasingly interested in consumer/third party owned lines. I would like to see neighborhoods here starting installing their own fiber to jumpstart the content providers...

Your paying $30 a month for 50Mb/s!!!!!!
I'm paying $40 a month for 50-200Kb/s EDGE aircard......
What is WRONG with this state!!!!!!!!!!!

....:(
All of you guys and your speedy internet is making me sad.....
I wish there was something else out here besides dial-up and edge aircard (which don't even operate at full speed).
Satellite?

I've got DSL simply because while cable is fast, in my experience, it's flakey. DSL has yet to go down on me (3 years running). For what I use the internet for it's plenty fast and a lot more affordable.

Well, the other reason would be that and I HATE cable TV (even digital). I've had numerous providers and no one comes close to offering what DirecTV does in terms of picture quality for non HD channels (the majority of them).

Do you have the option for EV-DO aircards from Sprint or Verizon? I have a Rev. A Verizon card and it is FAST. Hopefully you get 3G soon, and your card can take advantage!

As much as I'd love to get satellite internet, dish network no longer offers it. I know because I stopped into a store about 3 weeks ago and asked. They said they couldn't keep up with the demand for it.

What do they expect.....???

I'm thinking about moving to Lafayette, IN in about 6 months. They're reportedly getting HSDPA in about 9-16 months. I'll pay $70 a month to get 3.6Mb/s wherever I go.

Edit: And no, I'm not moving just so I can get faster internet....

Nope, not out here. Just EDGE from Centennial Wireless.

I spent my later childhood in Carbondale, IL, and I can sympathize. I did not even know of the national Mobile providers when I moved, I was wide-eyed at Sprint's digital service in 1999... Now I am surrounded in fiber and speedy mobile connections (for the States...).

By the way, Verizon Rev. A (different computer, not logging on MR a second time):

0 Bars of service (brought into my basement geek lair)
199ms ping
378 kb/s D/L
92 kb/s U/L

what blows is that we have a 2gb up dwnld limit a week here. unless you use wireless which i cant get in my room
