Says I sound like I'm from Wisconsin.

I have a weird New England accent...I catch myself putting bits of bostony stuff and bits of new yorky stuff into my speech, and then some stuff from the midwest because my mom is from Indiana.

An old co-worker said I sound like I'm from the mid-west, but I don't see it. I haven't lived there since I was two. I used to have a British accent up until about 5, but moving from England to Texas quickly changed that, so I'd say mines a mix of a bunch of different dialects, but mostly, it's probably western American English since that's where I've lived the longest.

The quiz, on the other hand, says I sound like I'm from the Midland. So I guess I'm accentless.

Yup.

It said I was Central North. It can't be!!!! I haven't lived in Wisconsin since 1978 and then it was for only 2 and half years. Dang my mom and her wisconsin roots. lol

Actually I don't have much of an accent unless I am tired then my southern accent comes out.

Same here. I picked up a lot when living in Syracuse, NY... but I refuse to pick up the Boston accent. It's like a lame attempt at a British accent.

That is funny, I lived in Connecticut for 3 years. When I started to pick up that accent, I told my hubby, i need to get back down south. lol

Love the boston accent, but I prefer the southern.

The should have included a question about how you say 'squirrel'

I got the West first, and then the Midlands. I took offense at being labeled as 'the lowest common denominator" ...

I love making fun of my friend from Brooklyn for saying 'squirrel' 'sqwuah-rehl'. Here in the midwest it's only got one syllable - 'sqwirl.'

And yes, it's pop.

I've been told I have 'very precise diction' in the past, and I'm always embarrassed to listen to myself speak b/c I sound so prissy. Once had an exchange student at my school ask me if I'd lived in Britain...:p

what the hell? It pegged me for midlands, not midland north!

My ilk comes from Bucktown, and of course its 'pop' 'sahhhsage' and of course 'awesome' becomes 'ahsome'. I also live in the world where I refuse to call it a living room (it's a frontroom, said 'frunchroom') and bungalows are standard. Damn you online quiz for disinheriting me from my home!

It claimed my result was "The Inland North"

"You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

"Pop"? Hardly.

But it did have Philadelphia a close second, and the Northeast right behind that, so its not too terribly far off, as I went to college in Philly and am from northern NJ. But I did have to change 3 answers before it finally got it "right".

While I haven't permanently lived much elsewhere, I have travelled quite a bit, so I suspect that its probably exposure through travel that's eliminating my NE regional accident and getting this test confused.

FWIW, here's another regional language cue that could be put into someone's test. Dangit...its now lunchtime and I really feel like a cheesesteak hoagie :D

Completely wrong. Says I'm from "the Midland," and I've never lived outside California. Neither of my parents are from that area either.

It says I sound like I'm from Fargo or Minnesota. Well, I'm only about 100 km away, so I guess that's close enough.

Boston.. which is correct BUT I must say that I do not have that classic Boston accent, I pronounce my Rs.

So what kind of American accent do I have then? The correct one ;) hehe.

This was fun, thanks for posting it.

Born and raised in Wisconsin and it pegged me as Inland North. However I've been living in Texas for the past 7 years and I've been told by my northern relatives that I have acquired an accent from here as well. Although If I spend more than a day back in Wisconsin I revert very easily.

Picked Philadelphia for me - which is right on...strange though, I almost feel like there is no accent as the phonetics and the pronunciation match. Typically the Philly area will ield words such as "Yous guys", "Wadder" - for water and the store Acme is pronounced as "Ac-a-me".

Eerily accurate. I grew up in Oregon and went to school in Boston, and I'm either "West" or "Boston" depending on my answer to the pronunciation of "horrible", which was the only answer that made me pause (I think I pronounce it both ways).

I'm guessing all of Canada speaks "Minnesotan". :) It's the rest of them that have the peculiar accents!

luv ya bunches! xoxoxo

It needs a few more questions to discern Canadian accents. For example does "Tour" sound like "Pour"? Calgarian twang versus Ontarioan nasal versus Maritime charm.

Peace - from your subtly different neighbours to the north. (Note the "u" in "Neighbours".

It Pegged me as from Philly but i'm from Brooklyn , Born and raised. so are both my parents. Actually i've only been to Philly once back in 2002.
