It claimed my result was "The Inland North"

"You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

"Pop"? Hardly.

But it did have Philadelphia a close second, and the Northeast right behind that, so its not too terribly far off, as I went to college in Philly and am from northern NJ. But I did have to change 3 answers before it finally got it "right".

While I haven't permanently lived much elsewhere, I have travelled quite a bit, so I suspect that its probably exposure through travel that's eliminating my NE regional accident and getting this test confused.

FWIW, here's another regional language cue that could be put into someone's test. Dangit...its now lunchtime and I really feel like a cheesesteak hoagie :D

-hh

I originally got the same as you (and we live near each other - I'm in sussex county) but I changed one answer: pronounce horrible. I said I say it as whore-able, and that put me with the Inland North. Once I changed it to horrible (like hot), it pegged me as NYC, NJ 100%

As for sandwiches, I say Hero, because that's the correct name ;) I've heard people say Sub, or Hoagie, but usually I order an Italian Hero, or whatever

Hah, that's pretty cool! Even though I grew up in Mississippi, my mom's from California so my accent isn't that strong.

ugh, how to I paste the code?

The quiz was dead on it reflected that i had a north easter accent which is dead on. Im a born and raised New Yorker. I cant get the code to show up in the forum. How is that done by the way?

what the hell? It pegged me for midlands, not midland north!

My ilk comes from Bucktown, and of course its 'pop' 'sahhhsage' and of course 'awesome' becomes 'ahsome'. I also live in the world where I refuse to call it a living room (it's a frontroom, said 'frunchroom') and bungalows are standard. Damn you online quiz for disinheriting me from my home!
When saying the number "40" (forty), I've heard more people from Illinois pronounce it "farty". What's up with that?

I heard a complete stranger say "farty dollars" once and immediately asked, "where in Illinois are you from?". They said "Belleville, why?". :)

I got "The West" as well, which doesn't surprise me since I've lived in California (mostly SoCal) all my life, except for 3 years in Michigan where they exhibited very, very peculiar differences in speech. They called freeways "expressways", and any kind of soda was either "coke" or "pop". :p

Actually, "farty" is a St Louis thing I heard when I lived there. Belleville is just across the Mississippi from St Louis. I never heard it when I grew up in the Chicago suburbs.

My accent is a combination including a hint of southern (lived in the south tll I was 16) and what I would call "plain" (plain to me, but probably not to others, I guess), and western.

Giddi up, yall! Yee haaa!!

Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I've lived just south of Boston, MA my entire life, but my mom is from Virginia and my dad is from Michigan, so it makes sense that I got:

I do pronounce my Rs.

Apparently my accent is of The West, even though the only place in the West I ever lived was Hawai'i... and that was when I was from 1 to 4 years of age.

I think a lot of military brats (like myself) end up with very non-specific accents. People in Washington state think I sound like I'm from the South, but people in the South don't think the same thing.
