I don't have a my own camera, so I just use my parents. My Dad has a Nikon D70 and a bunch of other old Nikons, and my Mom has a new Canon.

a nikon dad and a canon mom. how have they not succumbed to divorce yet? ;)

haha

oOf .. open mouth, insert foot

I hope things are okay for you.

I'd like to get a D1x, but they're still too expensive. Even on auctions they're going for about $1500 here :(

Actually they have. But no hard feelings.

my bad. but i couldn't resist the comment, and i've seen your posts--you seem able to take a joke. sorry if i offended.

5300... you should take a look at a used D2h over a D1x-- sure the ISO is worse, but the image quality is negligable and the additional of the CLS makes the 2h a much more flexible camera if you're planning on using a flash.

That said, I dunno what prices they're going for, but I know a few places who have 'em still NEW for $1999, which is a great price. (versus used with no Nikon warranty. which could easily make a $1500 D1x turn into a $2500 D1x).

I do very little flash photography, actually. I have an SB-600 sitting around, but I don't use it much, except for indoor shots (auction photos mostly.)
The D2x over here is like $4000+ I think (don't get me started on why Japanese products are cheaper outside Japan), which is WAAAY out of my budget! And skill-level, for that matter; I wouldn't fork over that much cash unless I needed it for business.
The S3 Pro has dropped about $500~$600 in price (new) since it was released, but I'm going to stay away from it. It looks rather disappointing. :(

Which camera's from this list are the best for low-light conditions such as a concert? I am looking to narrow down the list so if you have recommendations for which to completely cut off the list and which ones to consider it would be really appreciated. From what I have gathered the Kodak and HP are not even close to good quality as compared to cameras from Canon. I am currently leaning towards the Canon Powershot SD200 and this is the only list I can pick from. This will be my first digital camera! Thanks in advance.

3 Megapixel Cameras
Canon Powershot A400 3.2MP Digital Camera
Olympus D-535 Zoom 3.2MP Digital Camera
Canon PowerShot A510 A510 3.3MP Digital Camera
Canon PowerShot SD200 3.2MP Digital Camera

4 Megapixel Cameras
Fuji Finepix A345 4.1MP Digital Camera
Samsung Digimax A400 4.0MP Digital Camera
Olympus D-545 4.0MP Digital Camera
Sony Cyber-shot DSCS40 4.1MP Digital Camera
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S60 4.1MP Digital Camera
Panasonic DSC-LS1 Lumix 4.0MP Digital Camera

5 Megapixel Cameras
Pentax Optio 50 5.0MP Digital Camera
Fuji FinePix E510 5.2MP Digital Camera

I just got my Canon PowerShot A400 yesterday and I love it! Had looked at every other brand this one has the most features for your money. Amazon is selling it for $129. Anything made by Canon, Nikon, or Olympus would be a good camera. Sony, Panasonic, and Fuji are also good. Not so sure about Samsung or Pentax.

Just bought a Sony DSC-T7 and its simply awesome. I was coming off from a Pentax Optio S4, and wanted something with an internal zoom (for underwater work) and a HUGE display. The ability to take 640x480 video was also a bonus, and when I read that it takes it at a mighty 30fps, I was sold. And as ever, the Sony design is awesome.

It was a close run with the Nikon Coolpix S1, but the video swung it. That and the fact the underwater housing is only £65... they used to be triple that at one point!!

I purchased an Olympus C-7070 a week ago and simply love the thing. Very important consideration for me was wideangle. The 7070 has a 4x zoom from 27mm to 110mm and all the extras. I would have purchased it 3 months ago at its $700 introductory price, but last week I paid only $350 at buydig.com.

Then only a couple of days ago, this got announced. Drooling all over.

Started with a Sony DSC P1 back in 2000. Migrated to a Canon Powershot G3 in '03, also picked up a Sony DSC-U40 as a 'take-everywhere' camera.

Bought a Canon EOS 350D a couple months back, excellent camera, can't fault it. Currently have 3 lenses, EF-S 18-55mm kit lens, EF 55-200mm zoom, and my newest (and favorite) EF-S 17-85mm IS (image stabilised, great for indoors and low light when I don't want to use a fast film speed). I've yet to take a bad photo in the couple thousand shots I've run off whilst I've had the camera! :D

On afterthought, the only downside to it is the speed it fills a 1Gb compact flash card - only 91 RAW shots...!

i'm using my old faithful. It's a Canon PowerShot A40 w/ 64mb card. It's very old school but it should hold me until Canon makes a revision to their cyrrent A series line.

Complete w/:
2! Count them, TWO Megapixies!
AiAF (aritifial intelligience auto focus)- Assist lamp
4 AA batteries
3x ZOOOM
1.5" screen
movie, manual, and panoramic modes!

Haha.....I love having fun with old technology. :p

I had that camera and took it with me when I went abroad with it. I also bought the underwater case for it. I ended up losing the camera and I'm left with the $200 case. I went with a
Sony W1 5.1 MegaPixel and I HATE it. I'm convinced my 2.0MP Canon A40 took extremely better quality pictures, I am so disappointed with this Sony. I'll never buy anything other then a Canon ever again.

Edit: Sorry I forgot to back up why I hate it so much. Ever color every setting seems to completely wash out all colors. Everything is way to bright, most colors that are brilliant to the eye seem dull in the camera, it shipped with a dead pixel on the LCD, it over uses its flash and gives every picture a flash effect where the flash overwhelms certain things in the picture, but when turning off the flash the camera loses focus, I could not be more disappointed with the thing.

The Olympus 7070 and 8080 are great cameras. I have the 8080 and love it for "street work", though find it a bit lacking in ISO and writing speed after my recent trip in which I used the Rebel XT.

That new camera sounds very sweet. Too bad Panasonic is worse than Sony in dealing with their resellers. At least for the non-Big Box Stores there is no price protection, or ad support. Two key issues in order to get the best exposure (pardon the pun) to the market.

I just ordered a Canon Rebel XT, 50mm USM 1.4 lens, and a 28-135mm IS lens. I'm excited!

I just got back from 5 days in SF with my Rebel XT. Haven't had a chance to really work with the close to 1000+ shots (some of which were trying different settings, or multiple shots in order to try and get the best possible shot at slower shutter speeds). I traveled with a Tokina 12-24, a Canon 17-40, and the Tamron 28-75.

For my personal vision, the Tokina and Canon lenses saw the most duty. The Tamron was great for additional reach and more shallow DOF when needed. As to the XT body, I agree with some of the reviewers that the button placement can cause one to end up in the self-timer mode.

Since I shot mostly in BW in film, I had the camera set to record RAW+JPG in BW. I took an Epson P-2000 as my review and storage device. The only issue I have with the Epson is that they use the THM file in raw, so I was able to view the results in color in the RAW format and having the BW as my default for quick postings.

Glad that I got the XT to take on this trip, compared to my 10D. The responsiveness of the XT was so much better than my 10D. If you got the black body, don't worry about the "scratches", they rub off easily so far.

For the last two years i've been using a minolta 7hi but last week i bought a Canon Ixus 50 with a 66x 512MB SD card and extra battery. Must say i'm very pleased. It takes great pics, is so small that i can literally take it anywhere in my pocket and the battery life is great. Highly recommended!!

Good thread, some heart-felt discussion going on.

I use a Nikon 4500 I've had for nearly three years. It has held me in good stead and its macro shots are excellent, but its focussing issues wind me up frequently. I'm dying for a DSLR, a D70s looks like the best option for me at the minute - that way at least I'll be able to *see* what I'm focussing on rather than relying on a screen.

Hopefully I'll get one when I visit the States - as a hobby I can't really justify the cost right now (speshly considering the hole in my pocket I made buying a Mac!)

The best thing about digicams? Taking infra-red photos!

Well, I've had my Rebel XT since yesterday. I got a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens and a Canon 28-135mm IS lens for it. I haven't really gotten a chance to go out and shoot, so I've been playing around with it at the house. The resolution is pretty incredible! It's been a while since I've used a DSLR; the last time was when I was working at a camera store 2.5 years ago. They've certainly come a long way--much faster, lighter, and operates more like an SLR film camera.

These two shots are with the 50mm set a f/5.6. They're at full res, so dial-up users...you've been warned ;)
