There appears do be yet another SSD lottery in the most recently released Macs and I would imagine in the 128 GB and 256 GB, the drives are Toshiba but what what about 512 GB and upward? Samsung?
I remember with the first iMac 5k, I had to get a 512 to be assured of Samsung. There appears do be yet another SSD lottery in the most recently released Macs and I would imagine in the 128 GB and 256 GB, the drives are Toshiba but what what about 512 GB and upward? Samsung?
Same here...I have the 512GB and it's reporting APPLE SSD AP0512M
I have the 2TB SSD option and its showing as APPLE SSD AP2048M here & its really noisy. All SSDs I had before were silent, this one is always crackling. Im really disappointed with it, it sounds like a noisy Hard Disk Drive (HDD)..
That really is disappointing. I was so looking forward to Apple releasing a new Mac mini and now this happens. Also there seems to be issues from a few people with regards to the T2 chip and crashing. This is not the case with everyone though. I remember there being some issues with the 2011 Mac mini at first when it was released in July of that year and I ended up purchasing one in October and it lasted me five years. I still have it in my closet. I am wondering if perhaps I should hold off on purchasing the new Mac mini for a little while in case there are some problems on the early round of machines.
Edit: Thank you to everyone who replied. I was going to go with a 512 GB SSD and that would likely get me a Samsung SSD. I don't know if there would be any audible coil whine though.
thats the exact same noise i get from my working MacMini SSD.
If I had my fan ramped up, would I even hear the SSD? That said, that noise is annoying.
Ask Toshiba. The Mac mini drives are noisy as ****.How does a SSD make noise? No moving parts.
It's not the SSD chip(s). It's the change in current through the power supply inductors, which changes magnetic fields and that causes vibration and hence noise. How does a SSD make noise? No moving parts.
Apple has done that quite often with SSDs in the past.I find it unlikely that Apple would choose two suppliers for same component.

That’s strange. I only have 256GB but mine is absolutely silent..I have the 2TB SSD option and its showing as APPLE SSD AP2048M here & its really noisy. All SSDs I had before were silent, this one is always crackling. Im really disappointed with it, it sounds like a noisy Hard Disk Drive (HDD)..
big cash for that option.
what is the exact setup for your mini. i7? 16gb?
