I know this is an old topic by now, but being in the process of purchasing my own brand new macbook pro, I was wondering why none of you seem to care about the lack of trim support for third party SSDs?

I know there's the trim enable, but with OS X LION it's not supposed to work very well.

Any input on this?

ALL modern SSDs have built in garbage collection that seeks to perform a TRIM like function in firmware. I think the jury is still out on which SSD controller does this best long term. Note that even in the complete absence of TRIM for the last couple years there are not tons and tons forum reports from users saying their drives have slowed down over time.

Don't worry about it. But whatever drive you think has the best compatibility and reliability.

I understand that, but having several TB in USB/laptop drives laying around makes it an easy choice for me. Plus, like I said, I can wait a couple months and get a next-gen SSD and run dual SSDs.

edit: And even if you add in the cost of the base drive, you're still roughly half the price of a comparable aftermarket drive & optibay.

good deal for someone like you, other wise your buying one aftermarket regardless if its the hd or ssd

2 ssd's

I bought my MBP right before the processor refresh to the 2.4 or 2.5's, so I have a 2.2 with a 120GB apple(intel) ssd.
BUT...
I did buy a 2nd SSD, Intel 320 series 120GB SATA II to put in place of the optical bay. I got the drive already but still waiting on the OWC data doubler and tools to get here. I also bought 8GB of OWC ram.

some results using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test

Before the installation of my optibay SSD:
write: average 188 mb/s
read: average 210 mb/s

can someone compare or tell me if those are good read/write speeds, but im pretty sure it should be faster and some reviews on the app weren't that great saying "it slowed down after the update"

heres some more info:
Intel 6 Series Chipset:

Vendor: Intel
Product: 6 Series Chipset
Link Speed: 6 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported

Also a geekbench score of 10559 before the upgrade

I will post the results after the hopefully by 01 Jan 2012. I look forward to your feedback

I need help choosing a SSD but I don't know which brand to go for. Nor do I know much about what each brand of SSD does for my laptop. My laptop is 13" late 2011 macbook pro

I'd go with either a Samsung 830, a crucial M4 or the Intel 510. The M4 has been going on sale regularly, last being $129 for the 128 gb. If ask depends on how big of an SSD you want. In the 128 gb, Samsung has faster write times than the M4. These three are all sata III, not sata II.

I know Im digging up an old thread here.. Just bought a used late 2011 MBP and looking to upgrade the hard drive for an SSD..I'm not a techy guy so I'm just wondering if theres any better ones out there or which one I should use?

I have been very very pleased with my 256GB Plextor, fast, reasonably priced, and TRIM, enabled with Chameleon SSD Optimizer (google that for the download link), works fine.
I have seen excellent reviews about the SanDisk Extreme II also. Many of the MacRumor users posting here like the Samsung 840 Pro or EVO. There are other good choices too (do a goggle search for best SSD 2013 etc) or read the SSD buying guide (almost too much info to digest there:eek:)

You should take note that SATA III drives, all modern SSDs, will only work well in the HD bay in the late 2011 models, if you need to use the optibay, put a SATA II drive in there, like the original HD. See the link below for more info.
