Been here before...

...but what the hell.

G4 Tower 400MHz 512 RAM (old AGP version).
Standard configuration, without the SCSI card that came with it (OS X doesn't like that adaptec p.o.s.). All peripherals connected via firewire. Sound and video beamed out to my stereo and TV via a wireless device. Shares files via nfs and does most internet services.

400 MHz TiBook 384 MB RAM.
Standard confi plus an Airport card for networking.

All behind a Linksys wireless DSL router.

I'm completely content with y system and won't be upgrading for quite some time. :) Only macs could make me this happy.

my weapons

Beige G3 333Mghz upgraded to 500Mghz G4 via Sonnet upgrade CPU,
9 GB Ultrawide SCSI with 36GB Seagate Cheetah I installed myself to get my hands dirty in DV when it was still in infancy. Has 384MB of RAM, external APS Tech CD burner connected a la Firewire. Graphics is pumped by ATI Nexus 128 which was state of the art at the time. Not anymore of course!

My new machine is the 933Mghz G4 Apollo packed with 768MB of RAM. Might put in more later on. It is very sweet. No mobile system yet but I'm already looking forward to the G5s. Would rather buy G5 than a Powerbook any day. I'm like Genghis Khan, China wasn't enough, push on to Hungary and Asia minor. Geesh.

Oh, I also have a 466 Graphite iBook with Airport and 384MB RAM (jeez, I remember when I thought my Apple II was awesome for having 384K of RAM). Last fall I upgraded to a PBG4 667, which I dearly love.

I haven't done away with my iBook, though. Many friends asked me to sell it to them, but I had other plans. The iBook now sits in my apartment, quietly chugging along as a very low-power server. It only gets rebooted to apply updates, and it struck me during the whole "rolling blackout" fiasco here in CA (thanks Enron!) that there's no sense in me buying a huge UPS when I have a laptop with a 5-hour "UPS" built in.

Home:
8600-250 overclocked to 300Mhz (brave old comp)
Ti 550 / 512 Mo

Work:
Lot of BW G3, G4 and Imac
(Avid media composers, medialogs and graphic stations)

My set up

I have two computers, one to complete the other one.

1rst. G4 400/ 320Ram/20GHD. (more ram soon) with Audiomedia III and miró DC 30 Plus

2nd. PowerBook G3 500/250Ram/10GHD (more ram soon)

I use the G4 to create the content for the Pismo.
With the G4 I work with audio using:
-Protools
-Digital Performer
-T-racks
others.

In video and print I use:
-After Effects
-Premiere (while I learn Final Cut 3)
-Photoshop
-Illustrator
-Flash (a lot)
others.

At home I use the G4 for the video editing, some web design and audio mastering.

Out side I use the Pismo for VJ performances using Fuse 1.5

I have connected some midi gear to both computers because the midi interface is USB. I have:
-Mark of the Unicorn Midi Time Piece 2
-Roland JV-1080
-Kurzweil K2500RS
-Alesis DM5 drum machine
-Roland JP-8080
-Korg X5DR
-ahhh.. a Roland JV-90 as a controler

Other peripherals:
Scanner Agfa Snap scan 1212 usb (very good, simple but good).
The Printer Epson Stylus 600 (is gonna become a clasic, it is very good too).
CD-Burner Teak 4x (slow but reliable).
Digital Camera Agfa CL 50 (very good texture but discontinued and I lost the adapter to download the pictures to the computer).
DSL connection.

hey mrtrumbe

mrtrumbe

I was wondering how fast that G4 400 is. I am thinking about buying one with 320 ram. os 9.1, office 2001,final cut 2.01, a 10 gig and a 60 gig hard drives. I can get it for $600 with one of the older graphite apple flat panels(not the newer case type). Is it good enough to do video in final cut without waiting to long for it to do stuff?

I am going to get it no-matter what. Cause that is such a super-duper-duper dang nice deal. All that stuff together is worth over 2k.[

4 macs at Home: Dual 1GHz/1.5GB RAM/Dual Ultra 160 Controller w/ 2 Drive/3 80GB ATA Drives/SuperDrive/GeForce4MX and Radion. Dual 17" Monitors

466Mhz G3 w/ Radion and Ultra SCSI Drive

500Mhz 9600 w/ Rage 128 ATA Drives DVD-RAM

500Mhz 7300 w/ Rage 128

On my desk at Work: Dual 533/640MB RAM/GeForce 3/Dual ATA Drives/17" monitor - 7300/180 - Dual Pentium III (Yuck!)

Responsible for in the computer room: About 20 Various Servers Most iMac (4TB of storage).

Anyone know how to get OS X Server 10.1.2 to mount a 1.2TB volume?

Hey you mrtrumbe!

The G4 400 is a good computer but when you do something in final cut pro then you will have to render the entire thing to make one movie out of it, that takes time with any computer.

The deal you are getting is good but try to find out a bit more about FCP in case you haven't se the program working. Find out if dropping more ram in to it would do faster renders. And everything depends of what you are gonna do with FCT, I mean, if is for playing around do it.

I have the same configuration G4 400 AGP with 320 Ram and I do After Effect. Is not as fast as I would like but it is faster than my old power PC 9600/200 for shure, I may drop some more memory for ram preview.

Besides, after a few hours of hard work the render gives you time for a very nice break!

Ps. My site is out of business.. sorry:(

I feel for ya man.. I really do.. BUT I think the question was what "Macs" we all have... so here's mine (for the moment):

1. iMac DV/SE:
500 MHz Coppermine G3 OVERCLOCKED to 550MHz.. 600 soon.
384 MB 2-2-2 RAM
Rage Pro 128 graphics with 8 MB video RAM (of course)
30 MB HD (upgraded)
DVD-ROM/CD-ROM slot loading
Sony CRX1600L (12x8x32) CDRW firewire extern (great 4 iTunes & Toast)
Iomega 250 ZIP firewire extern
Imation Superdrive extern provides 130 MB and regular 1.4 MB floppy use.
iDock for extra USB ports and old serial/parallel junk I never use.
Running OS 10.1.2 only.

USE: Primarily as a loaner to friends when their pentium laptops
or desktops have broken. (Twice this last year). Other primary use
is for video editing because the iBook's harddrive is just too small.

2. iBook DV/SE:
466 MHz G3
320 MB 2-2-2 RAM
Rage Pro Mobility graphics (of course)
10 MB HD
DVD-ROM/CD-ROM tray loading
Airport (Rev. B 128-bit encryption)
Running OS 10.1.2 full time (photoshop in Classic mode!)

USE: This is my primary computer.. I use it for lite video editing,
all homework assignments, scientific applications, pinging other
mobile users with 802.11b for fun.. doing all my work generally at
home, at school, or in the field (coffee shops and airports).
