Sorry, I'm not trying to be obnoxious by double-checking here, but are you sure? Chrome often fires up your dGPU, unless you explicitly use something like gfxCardStatus to tell it not to. I just want to be sure.

I use Chrome to watch flash videos and I have not had it fire up the dGPU except in two cases: using Google Hangouts and watching videos on Dailymotion.

Here's my temperatures after watching a video (where Chrome fired up the dGPU):
Temperatures are in Celsius.

He stated the 100 value is actually Fahrenheit, which puts it at about 37C. That's perfectly fine. Enjoy your machine.

Er thanks. I meant to lead off my previous post with this.

Those look perfectly normal. As an aside the iStat Pro widget is only reading the heat sink value, not the sensors on the CPU (which iStat Menus reports).

Can you perhaps boot up your machine but keep all apps closed for, say, 10 minutes, and then post a screenshot of your temps then? That would be instructive for creating a baseline.

I was running gfxCardStatus and tell it to go integrated only unless I'm hooked up to my monitor. I'll post temps when I get a chance to shut it down.

Good deal. Thanks!

As an aside, I've noticed Chrome's been behaving much better lately on its own. Anyone else notice that too? I think Google finally got around to making some changes they should have made a looong time ago, although I'll wait for others to chime in before I conclude that it isn't something odd on my end. FYI, I'm running the 32.0 beta.

Here's what my temps look like when playing a video. Notice that gfxCardStatus says that the dGPU is on, an every app on my Dock is open, the heaviest of which are Chrome (I'm on the dev channel build), and IntelliJ (a Java IDE).

Needless to say, I'm extremely pleased with my Mac and haven't had it overheat so much that it was hot to the touch. I can even use it on my lap, and it only gets a little warm, nothing to worry about. And the fans are so quiet! Like really quiet! I've only noticed the noise when I'm playing a game or when I've been watching flash videos for some time.

The highest I've seen my Mac go is up to 85C and this was when I was encoding a video. I don't usually inspect temperatures so I have iStat Menus trial installed and I'm going to delete it once the trail expires. I have no need to watch my temperatures constantly.

(By the way, this is an old Doctor Who episode so don't mind the bad visuals :p)

There's my temperatures from running my MacBook for 5 minutes after turning it on measured in Fahrenheit.

Looks totally normal. I think the Fahrenheit part is throwing you off, since most of the quoted numbers are in Celsius. You can switch to Celsius in iStat Menus.

MPB late 2011 2.2 GHz and Intel i7 4gb of ram 500gb HD. 145F and 4095rpm

If we don't know (a) which sensors that is or (b) what you're doing, it's impossible for anyone to say whether it looks normal or high.

Peter Davidson doesn't get enough love! I have a picture of myself with him in front of the Tardis. He was randomly at a shopping mall in New Orleans when I lived there many years ago.

If you decide that you want to keep your temps in your menu bar, there are some free alternatives. I think it can be a good idea depending on your environment. I live with a 100 pound Alaskan Malamute and another large northern mixed breed. They "blow" coat twice a year and there is no way to keep up with it for about a week. It gets sucked into anything with a cooling fan. I'm pretty sure that monitoring temps has saved at least one CPU and one video card over the past decade (two fan failures and one giant clump of Malamute fur lodged in a heatsink).

You don't have to be neurotic about it. It doesn't have to change your computing habits any more than having a temperature gauge in your car changes your driving habits. It's just there to let you know when something has gone wrong.

Alaskan Malamute fur is particularly egregious when it comes to computers. It's highly highly insulative. It allows them to sleep *comfortably* buried in the snow at 20 degrees below zero. They curl up and wrap that big fluffy tail around the tip of their nose, the only vulnerable part of their body. But any dog or cat in the house can slowly lead to the same type of problem.

These are all free. Of course, if you end up finding value in them, a small donation would be appropriate.

I know! Peter Davison is my third favorite doctor now, after Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. He's really good. Unfortunately, I think I'm near the end of his life and his regeneration is pretty soon which sucks a lot. I will miss him. I think Nyssa was an awesome companion too. Wish she stayed longer like Teagan. I don't like Turlough at all.

Anyways, I never monitored my temperatures and nor will I in the future. I think it's only for people who think that the Mac cannot manage temperatures. I have deleted iStat Menus. I'm pretty happy with iStat Pro. Wish they still updated that but oh well.

I didn't like Turlough's character or story arc much either. I did like Adric, though. Those characters, by the way, (Davidson's Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric) will be working on two audio productions next year. So, yes, shortly you will have seen the last of Davidson's Doctor, but not necessarily have heard the last of him.

Now that I've hijacked this thread, want to hear something really nerdy? I've modified a sonic screwdriver to serve as keyless entry for my car. I kept the original sound-effects chip so that it has the full effect. It raises eyebrows when I point it at my door lock just before getting into my car. There is enough space left over to build a small transmitter for my garage door too. That's the next phase of the plan. :)

Maybe I need to modify another sonic screwdriver for Apple Remote. That would be fun too.

Just to have one on-topic sentence, those temperatures in your MBP are looking really good.
