13" rMBP
Reasons against:
- iGPU maybe not strong enough, gui-performance (not performance itself) sub-par compared to 2012 machines, more comparable to 2011 or 2010 even?
- It's a 1st or 1.5th generation mac, so maybe riddled with bugs like image retention or worse
- The steep price compared to MBA or 15" rMBP
- A possibly weird workflow when having to build pixel exact web designs (I'm a web designer) due to the retina display.
Reasons for:
- Size and weight
- The retina display
- GUI-performance seemed completely fine in the store
- I needed a computer right now
- I had the MBA before and wanted something new and shiny
- I had the money
I pulled the trigger.
GUI performance is absolutely fine... though I do notice that Safari is much smoother at scrolling websites than Chrome, which is often choppy especially on heavy sites like The Verge. No issues with Safari though.
So some software is not optimized for performance at HiDPI resolutions.
The form factor sold it for me. I would have gotten the 15" if this was my only computer, but since I already have my quad-core mac mini I don't need as much CPU power or disk space in my portable.
