Prestige, design, power.

I disagree with the design part. MacBook has a far superior look in my opinion - there's no latches and the computer is all one colour whereas the Pro dips in and out of one metal and two different coloured plastics. The keyboard on MacBook is also a cut above the MacBook Pro's in my opinion.

I truly love my CD Blackbook. I am thinking if the MB is so good the pro will be even better. I will find out on Friday.

For my tastes and uses, the MacBook is simply not a consideration.

The MacBook Pro has...
* Better design, especially the keyboard
* Adequate screen size and resolution
* Graphics card that can play semi-recent games
* Fast enough CPU to not feel slow for the next couple years
* 2GB RAM standard is enough for me for a while
* Large enough hard drive (160 GB) to last me for a few years
* Full DVI port that will drive any monitor or projector I connect to it
* Was priced competitively for a high-end laptop (whereas the MB was very expensive for a mid-range laptop)

MacBook has all of these things and in my opinion the screen is a great size and resolution.

Firewire 800 because I use FCE on my Macbook Pro and I can capture live HD content from my camera. Also, the MBP has a better graphics card where the MacBook's is onboard. It has the capacity for an external eSATA RAID set.

Mind you, it was my mate's black MacBook that sold me on going Mac.

I love my MBP. :apple:

Then it would be a good option for you. But when I bought last summer, getting those specs priced the MB close to the MBP, which for me was very overpriced for a mid-range laptop.

Even if the MB was the same specs and price as a MBP, I wouldn't buy it as the screen is too small and I don't like the keyboard.

But others have different tastes, and they can buy accordingly.

I selected the 15" Macbook Pro for the following reasons, all about equally important:
- matte screen
- screen size/resolution
- firewire 800

My MBP is also my desktop computer, so it needs to be able to do all the HD video work and photo/graphics work in addition to the usual e-mail, web, writing stuff.

All well worth the extra bucks for me.

I must admit a major factor was that it is simply much more sexy than the MacBook. But in reality I was moving up from a 12" PowerBook (also Aluminium) and didn't want to move to plastic. Back then, 12" Alu G4 versus cheap plastic G3 iBook for nearly the same price was a no brainer, but it has stuck this time and I haven't minded spending nearly twice as much on the pro model!

I love the backlit keyboard, the extra power, the GPU, the bigger screen size, multi-touch, etc. The MacBook is great value but not half as sexy looking and I'm not so keen on the keyboard.

Up to you though. To be honest, both are powerful enough for most tasks, but choose the MBP for games. Go check them both out in the store and see which one you like best.
