It would have to be a combination of
1) Budget: iPad, front cover, back shell, Applecare = almost €900)
2) if the ability of the old iPad prevents me to run the latest iOS and Apps that I need
3) (very) outdated technology of the old iPad: retina is nice, but having it wasn't isn't a necessity at the moment
4) ICT needs coverage: buying a new iDevice that just will gather dust after the "it's new, lets use it" period has past because your other hardware is sufficient to cover all your needs

I'm still rocking my iPad 2 (iOS 6.1.3) and while the iPad 5 will probably cover my point 2 and 3 (iOS 7, retina, better processor, small form factor), I'm still not sure if I would buy it, because of my point 4.

When I went to work with the train and there was a pc (desktop) provided by the company, I used my iPad 2 to watch movies.
When I went to with the train, but I had to bring my own notebook (MBP), I watched movies on the MBP.
Now I'm going to work with my car, so I can't watch movies while I'm driving ;) and it makes no difference if the company provides a pc or not.

I'm using my iPad 2 nowadays when I have to teach (the course is also available in pdf), reading at home or watching movies when I'm travelling on plains, trains, but no automobiles.
All the other times my ICT needs are covered by the iPhone and the MBP.

The only thing that I steady upgrade are my iPhones and that's primairly because they are work tools for me in a market segment were the technology that you use has to be more to the cutting edge of what the market provides.
This is just my own need and doesn't reflect the need of others, but even there my upgrade speed is modest (every other year).

I upgraded from the ipad1 to the 2 because it was simply a better machine in every respect although it lacked retina.

I then upgraded to the iPad 3 and downgraded within a week. I simply couldn't justify the price. Apart from Retina there wasn't much different. I mainly use teaching apps and watch movies. The retina really made no difference, so I went back to the 2. Still using it.

I was all set to upgrade to the 4 this spring until they sprung the spec bump 4 on us last fall. In hindsight, I wish I had upgraded back then.

I now need to use the internet a lot more on my ipad and find the 2 kind of frustrating to use as it doesn't have retina and it's a bit too slow.

Now I'm going to wait it out for the 5. Which is hopefully due by June... but probably not.

New, better design with the lure of a significantly lighter machine is stopping me from grabbing a 4. I do feel I'm missing out on a much better experience at the moment though. Oh well, tough tiitties to me.

Recent iPad Releases Not Compelling

The family's been sharing an iPad 1 since they came out and love it. (We also have 2 iPhone 4S's, 2 iPod Touches and 2 Kindle HDs).

My wife got me the iPad 4 last Xmas but I was seriously underwhelmed. Yes it's faster, slimmer, and the display is very nice but it's not like the 1st gen is slow or ugly. Camera is nice but I'm not video chatting on it or running around taking pics with an iPad. Given the price I just couldn't justify upgrading for what I consider decent but not critical enhancements.

The iPad Mini's form factor is nice and I would definately have exchanged the 4th gen for a Mini, but the Mini's display is seriously lacking compared to it's 7" competitors. I brought my Kindle HD into the Apple store to compare the screens and the Kindle screen is much nicer than the Mini's.

So I returned the 4th gen and for months now I've been holding onto a ~$550 Apple giftcard waiting for the rumored and somewhat myseterious iPad mini screen upgrade. If a Retina Mini doesn't come out until October I'll probably just buy myself the new 7" Nexus and use the giftcard on a iPhone 5S when they come out.

For tablet's only thing that makes me upgrade is the speed. iPad 1 started getting sluggish so I picked up a iPad 3. Will stick with that for a while, probably until mini goes retina.

What prevents me from upgrade to iPad 3 and 4 is because I cannot deal with bit heavy to hold and feel bit too warm. I will upgrade to iPad 5 if they are thinner and light to hold. Also I want HD on front facing camera. :apple:

Well iPads are long term investments to me.

So still using the iPad 1. Will probably upgrade to new model this year.

Another Ipad 2 owner overhere, and I dont feel the need to upgrade yet.

Retina is beautiful, i saw the other day a guy playing subway surfer on retina Ipad and it was just beautiful compare to my device. However, im greedy so if i want to upgrade my "still very capable" device, I would want more than just better screen or faster chip.

I want a totally new design of the device as well. Ipad design is getting boring. Literally from 1-4, its almost the same. 2 is thinner than 1 but from 2-4 you just can't tell the different. Heck, the boxes are even almost identical.

I wish i could see Ipad 5 on glass front/back design. Sure, it would get hot and yes it would be heavy and prone to scratches and probably dead upon drops. But if apple can't get rid of the heating problem in retina Ipad, then give something else to us that we can offset the feeling of such heavy tablet which runs hot upon extended uses. And i didnt mean Ipad mini form factor. Its just hideous to me, premium materials is what make Ipad and different tablet.

I'll probably upgrade from my iPad Mini every two generations. I'll probably skip the iPad 5/Mini 2 generation and upgrade after that.

I still have the iPad 1 because it was stupid to replace something that wasn't even a year old when iPad 2 launched.

Then iPad 3 came with the orgasmic retina display and iOS 6 was fully supported on it... But my original iPad was still capable of doing everything I would do with iPad 3 so I didn't upgrade.

And iPad 4 sucks so yeah; I deserve a shiny, beautiful, light and thin white & silver iPad 5.
